Improvements to the Qantas Lounge Access Policy for families

Computers in lounges are no different to the good seats on planes - first in, best dressed (unless you're gazumped by higher status).....In this day & age most FF would have their own device anyway.

The turnover of people in lounges is pretty fast allowing a fair chunk of members to use facilities when required.
The WiFi is not always working in T3 QP, I have limited time to check for last minute notes from my staff before the next flight, so when a couple of kids are playing the card game patience on 2 of the terminals so that they do not bother their father who is reading the paper, then they get preference over say WP1 person!!! For gods sake, they have preference lanes for boarding planes, surely keep one computer free for WP and above for a minute here and there when needed.

The kids might be WP themselves - who knows?

I have two aged under 11 that are both SG sitting on 960sc each with 7 months of their membership left to get the rest. I'd imagine there are plenty of kids out there with high status.

kempvet, are you saying your use of a computer is more important than say a gold, silver or bronze as well? DYKWIA indeed.

I'd never want a kid pushed off a computer because I wasn't organised enough to check my notes, to that kid their game is as important as my stuff. I guess they don't call it W platinum for nothing.

It is a common problem with T3 QP that the wifi is not always working or notoriously slow and that the mainstream computers need to be used, lets forget about this DYKWIA business, rather where computer numbers are limited just have a limit on one computer of 5 minutes so that anyone can use it, for playing the card game patience or simply reading an MRI image and making a comment.

Crikey you're braver than me. I'd never use a public PC for anything that required logging in. I'd only ever use PCs like this for playing games or checking the news etc...

We are getting away from the point, the point is when resources are so limited like in the T3 QP lounge, consideration should be given to other people, just as you would with mobile phone use, and when computers are tied up by the one person for 40 minutes it is not considering others when other people continually stand behind waiting to use them, and especially when the wifi is slow or not working.

Should the ¨consideration of others¨ extend to toilet use? A time limit?
If you have no other option and simply ¨have to¨ use the computers, pehaps ask the parents politely?

Damn it. Your kids have more SCs than I do

Can they friend me into the Flounge one day?

I suspect it will be a very short WP stay for the two munchkins - courtesy of a BA special fly F for J:)

Next time they reach the lofty heights of WP - it'll be coming out of their own wallet:mrgreen:

DYKWIA, not really, because I let people break into my computer use to check their emails (even kids sometimes) before they take off when the wifi is not working at SYD T3 as I understand the limitations of this QP. The point to be made is when resources are limited, and the problem made worse when the wifi is down, then first come first serve is not the best method and other methods such as time limits should be suggested. Probably best that I didn't mention status, as I can see, it has distracted people away from the original theme that I was trying to discuss, like with mobile phones there needs to be consideration, with computer resources being limited with wifi connection issues, there also needs to be consideration from everyone, adults, kids, WP1 down to bronze, everyone needs to be considerate, rather than the first come, first serve idea.

As a parent who frequently travels with kids, I LOVE the lounges with kids areas and my kids prefer them too. That said, although there is now a kids area in the Syd Int bus lounge, there isn't one in the J lounge and I have one little wanna be WP, so we go in there. The girls in the spa were nice enough to paint my 6yr old's nails last week and it was one of the highlights of her whole trip. They must get a few kids in there though, as there was even a kids menu...

I think kids room's, with electronic games (maybe the could be borrowed from the front desk and boarding passes or passports held as security) TV - with choice of TV programs/movies etc would keep the kids out of the main lounge and make things easier for the parents too, as well as keep the kids away from everyone else in the lounge. Win for everyone!

I'd prefer the lounge to be free of both minors and miners, but thumbs up to Qantas for codifying the existing unwritten rule. A bit of certainty is always a good thing.

Seems like you and I will have a beef on two fronts then. Most miners and minors are reasonable lounge participants/users. The miners look a little scruffy but generally they don't cause a problem. Whereas the minors it comes down to the parents. As with every demographic you get a few bad eggs.

Perhaps sign up for mobile broadband then with a laptop/tablet you'll have internet whenever you need it.

Agree wholeheartedly here.

Not quite. Gold won't get you access to the J lounge and oonly has 1 guest..

But still I know the QP staff are fairly relaxed with kids.. Heck they have allowed me extra guests in the past.

J lounge when flying to the USA and the new family policy means access is available for 4 child with a WP and a SG.

Sorry but I'm going to pull you up right there. SYD T3 QP as a P1? Why don't you go to the J lounge where computers are usually available?

I beg to differ on that one. Sure they have flown the miles but they haven't paid for the flights. Same as BIS travel, but neither the same as someone buying flights with their own hard earned cash IMHO.

I'd suggest that around 80%+ of all WP's & WP1 are doing it with someone else's money:!: .......reckon I've underestimated that number by a good 10%.

I'm not sure you can beg to differ. The rules are very clear, there is no stipulation that one has to personally pay for flights.

I suspect some miners may not like the idea of paid access to the QP. It might be considered not the same as access gained from BIS travel?

Would be an interesting survey. But I doubt that the AFF community would necessarily be a valid sample, so we will probably never know.
I recall that there was a thread recently - not sure what the topic was - but many members were declaring whether or not they were self-funded. The numbers were quite surprising.
