In Defence of the Melbourne Dungeon

As someone who hasn’t visited the Melbourne Dungeon in many, many years, I have to say I have been pleasantly surprised this afternoon. Definitely a nicer experience than when I was last here. Truth be told, the whole MEL Int’l experience has been way better compared to when I last departed T2.

Is the QP one of the better lounges I’ve visited? No. But it sure beats being out in the main departures hall.

And staff have just been bringing around coughtails for the guests here in the lounge. Nice touch 👍

Maybe I just lucked out recently and visited at a bad time or day.

I will tell you one thing I experienced from our recent trip. Departing from T2 was a hell of a lot better than arriving in Sydney and transiting to MEL.

Won’t argue against that. I often think the transfer from SYD T1 to T3 (or T2) is horrid for those who have to do it. Much nicer just walking next door.

For most of the AU platinum cards, at least my QF one, the passes are only valid at Australian lounges (SYD/MEL). They can’t be used overseas.
Did not know that. If that's the case then use them wherever I suppose as the Melbourne and Sydney lounges are about the same.

Yes, as was noted earlier, there is plenty of room in the dungeon even if the lack of natural light never mind plane cough is a bit of a let down.

Or the HBA QP for that matter (which arguably is worse than the departure hall)

You are correct that it is an easier connection albeit only slight. After all, you still need to re-clear security pass through emmigration, etc. At other airports (i.e. Toronto or Amsterdam) it's just a matter of walking to the next gate.

😆 This is true!

I guess the trade off in some of those other airports is the increased security to get airside if it’s your point of embarkation for the trip (rather than just transiting), but yeah, certainly take your point.
