Instant IHG Diamond Status by Registration

Reckon it would be a bit much to ban peoples accounts. It was reported everywhere and as far as people knew, it was just a regular promotion.

A mass downgrade, possibly as it’s IHG. But anything more would be pretty poor form…and drive customers even further away.

BTW, joining Ambassador automatically extended Diamond until end of 2023 for me.
Cheaper and easier than staying 10 nights

I have received an offer of joining Ambassador for $200usd or 40000 points, and if I stay 2 nights at IC or Kimpton or Regent before 31 Jan, I will get 20000 points. Is it worth it?

If already Diamond and expiring in 2022 then no brainer to spend the $200 USD if it extends. But if you only got Diamond due to this code and they mass downgrade, what happens then - you drop back to Platinum Elite Ambassador with 2023 expiry?

Yes that’s what may happen but the $200 is worth it for me even if it does.

Given how little value IHG Diamond status actually offers, it would be crazy to annoy thousands of people by downgrading accounts (or worse) to save a few cheap brekkies.

The new IHG program does have good benefits, but they’re all tied to nights stayed not status

This could end up being clever for IHG if they get a bunch of Ambassador sign-ups with an increased number of high-margin IC stays in 2023. Doubt it was a cunning plan however

US$200 later I have another email welcoming me to Diamond elite - again….(online showing expiry Dec 2023). Now we wait…
Sometimes this is possible with 20k bonus point promos as well (edit, as others have already mentioned)

There's one or two blog posts detailing the extension but it's not discussed widely.

I will be really disappointed if this unpublished benefit of ambassador goes away if too many of the new diamonds go down that route!

I got this as well and booked the holiday Inn at Melbourne airport through an online site. My flight had been delayed and I wanted to spend the night there, this was at 3:am. Upon entering the lobby it seemed the two people at the counter had no interest to make an eye contact or looking being approachable. I initiated the conversation after they both ignored me and the guy straight away said the lady will help me. There was no help and it seemed she didn't want be there nor to see me. She said check in was at 2PM and after I suggested that I needed the room because my flight was cancelled and if she could help, the guy walked over and said where have you booked it and I mentioned online through a third party, he said can't help you and there are no rooms. Initially it seemed they wanted to help but not sure why they didn't like mentioning third party.

I mentioned about my diamond status and they couldn't give a rat's tail about it. And said no room.
I walked out of there at around 3:30AM.
So this diamond status doesn't mean anything.

Unotunately, as I understand it, the hotel is only obliged to honour status if you book via ALL. This is common to most hotel programmes. Having said that, if they were full, they would have struggled to help you even if you had done so-they might have been more polite about it though

In the case of a Holiday Inn, IHG Rewards would be the relevant program. But same deal.

Having said that, not sure if the check in was being attempted really early, or really late.

My bad on the programme. Agree would be poor form if they had sold a booked room just because not checked in earlier
