International Upgrades - Improved Experience

I am flying QF 29 Monday in Y+. Currently showing only F1 A1. Not sure whether to put in for an upgrade for J as, leaving at 11.55pm, I don't think I'd get much benefit after 3 hours of Bolly in FLounge. Question is - with that loading, is it likely QF has oversold Y and therefore op-ups may be available (I am WP). Don't know how to play the brinkmanship game yet....

Was watching seat allocations for my fight to LAX on Saturday. At approx. an hour before the flight about eight unallocated PE seats became allocated with a corresponding number of economy seats becoming free. I'm thinking this was the late confirmation process in action.

Well- at least that means I still got a chance. Still don't like the so-called "enhanced" experience: J class all open, it's almost T-24 now and still nothing so in the end, if lucky, it will probably happen over night before the flight, as it always did. My last upgrade (from J to F) was a beep at the gate even which wasn't really an "enhanced" upgrade experience at all. Nothing much changed it seems.

Well no joy here for QF9 departing today.....

Expert flyer is saying 4 F available but no joy for an upgrade..... Darn CLs and P1s.......

I just recall that I did not receive an SMS for my upgrade, will see what happens next time. Fingers crossed for your trip tomorrow!

Thanks a lot- looks like I got some Qantas love there but it all went a bit strangely...

At around T-22 my online profile suddenly changed and I had 16K allocated instead of my old Y+ seat. I could even go in and change that to 17k because I don't want to sit right next to a bassinet seat, just in case there's a little cry baby in there.

The strange thing though is that the status of the upgrade still says "Requested" and I cannot check in online but get some error message. I just called them (through after the first beep- thanks Qantas!) and they told me it's all okay and apparently they need to manually release some upgrade voucher which can take until T-5. Never heard of that before and no txt message either but it looks as if I'm in J tomorrow, yuheee! :D

Never heard about that upgrade voucher  anyhow... enjoy the trip tomorrow and your holiday in the States!

I had the same happen in January - the seat was allocated in F at about T-20 but it still said the upgrade was only Requested. Changed to Confirmed at about T-12.

I'd say that actually is the new process working. Not only do they confirm upgrades further out, but also closer to departure when there are late cancels or no shows. In your case, it's possible there were no seats within the 48 hours before, but a seat in F may have freed up late in the process and you were given a last minute upgrade.

There is still a bit of a problem with this, as in the past you could claim that this was an op-up, if they had given you a status of "rejected" online. A complaint could be lodged for a refund of points as you could argue that by Qantas rejecting the request, they were terminating your upgrade request under the T&Cs. Therefore any subsequent upgrade actually happening was not under the terms of the original request and therefore you should not have to pay for it. This doesn't work now, seeing as they officially offer points upgrades until departure, rather than only at 5 hours before.

You also may not have gotten the upgrade - all easy to postulate post facto that it was an Opup - but you also could have been stuck sitting in your original seat.

Much better to part with the points and still get the upgrade :)

Serfty - why 85DE???

Went to "confirmed" over night and luckily one of my favorite seats, 13K up in the J "private cabin" got free in the meantime. All good to go, very happy now! :p

I'm now 2/2 on the A380 F upgrades :D
As another data point, waitlisted at T 48, waitlisted P class flight disappeared sometime between T-12 and T-5. Resigned myself to the class booked etc. Upgrade confirmed Txt received whilst in taxi to the Hex at T -3.
Very happy with the new improved upgrade process :)

Well done Princess Fiona. Great result doing 2 out of 2 on your A380 rides in First.
How many points was that?

As pleased as I am for you ;) I am not sure how this new process is any different to the old process. In fact worse it seems as you didnt get the confirmation until you were in the cab...

But the "new" process isn't just about earlier confirmations up to T-48, but it's also about later confirmations - right up until departure. This is probably an example of where there was no seat available at T-48 but a late cancellation/change resulted in a seat becoming available. As opposed to that seat potentially going empty in the past. In the past that may have also resulted in an op-up instead if Y/PE/J was oversold, but now it's allocated as a points upgrade.
