Step 1 in a multi staged programme to spin QFFP away from the airlines?!

Absolutely - beat me too it. Welcome to Aeroplan down under.

And many people here complain about how VA is amateur hour, yet QF are now emulating them?

For the record I hope QFF doesn't get sold. Having seen the mess that is Aeroplan, it's not good for the customer.

Ha ha. I hadn't seen your post when I mentioned Aeroplan above. But its where QFF is going, no doubt.

I hope the site is wildly successful leaving the J & F awards for AFFers :)

How much regular eBay shopping do you do??

I just buy the odd plug, adaptor etc have you found some way to do more regular weekly shopping on it???

A couple of the bigger stores now have Ebay portals. For example I have bought stuff from DSE and Super Cheap Auto via Ebay.

To those who plan to use this, and based on my experience with using the Velocity equivalent, make sure you clear all cookies from your browser, then sign in to this site, and go immediately to the purchase process. If you don't, another cookie may be recorded from some other link you click, and you won't get your points.

I don't see it as anything negative - Velocity have done it for years. I'm happy to earn points on purchases.

Ok that could be slightly interesting, I've had a look on eBay to see if I could get much of anything I regularly buy and couldn't see anything, is DSE Disk Smith??

Hmmm, wonder what the rates/costs are for selling stuff on eBay?? And allowing people to pay by paypass...

Yes

Small sellers get done 10% by Ebay. Paypal I think takes about 3 percent.

I am sure the big sellers get some inducement to sell on Ebay.

Probably. Airlines like the US majors, Cathay Pacific, Velocity have run sites like this for years. With 10 million members in a population of 24 million, showing growth in a spin-off will become harder from just their existing revenue sources.

I suspect the reason for the separate login might be because they have outsourced the back end, like all the other airline shopping portals. Although what would be really interesting is if they didn't in fact outsource it, but the separate login is required because the data is kept separately from the airline, all the easier to spin off a division that has loyal customers giving them shopping data in return for a few QFF points.

It would be interesting to know how many active members they have, as I have no doubt a large proportion of the 10 million would have 0 points in their account due to inactivity.

You make a good point. I work with someone who lost about 170k points due to inactivity, and now doesn't even attach his QFF number to his travel. Has no idea what his QFF number or login are, but he is part of the 10 million...

Hmmmm, one can only imagine the number of points required for a premium toaster eh if even the cheapies are somewhat eye watering...

Pity they can't get coles or woolies or something you would use more day to day, but I guess they aren't premium enough...

Premium Toasters are hard to find but Basic ones are far easier. Maybe you should search for your "Toaster" 355 days out.

I'm actually quite surprised at the lack of Australian retailers on that site, compared to how many are UK or USA based. I would have expected many more.

I'm pretty happy about the DJ's offer. Combining it with payment via my DJ's Plat Amex will earn a very tidy 8 points per $ :)

Wow, well done. That works out great for you.

However, if the above combination is an indication of how many points are going to be on offer per $ spent (outside any special/bonus offers). Its a sign of some serious devaluation of points spend rates in the near future.

Yes a very valid comment, maybe some have adopted a 'wait and see' approach....

Maybe the cost per point QFF charges the retailers is more for local Vs offshore sellers. If you take FX into account, then its almost certainly a material consideration for UK based retailers.

I would have thought it was a sign of how businesses value brand loyalty, so maybe the purchase of points to tap into a highly engaged and loyal clientele is seen by these businesses as a cheap way to boost their bottom dollar. I don't assume qantas selling more points means my points are worth less. I've met people who as P1 don't know how to book award seats and I know plenty who think the only way to book flights is to buy gift vouchers for travel with the points rather than just booking the flights, so I think a bigger threat to the value of our points is educating people on how to get the best value from them not by giving them more points.
They have already reduced earn rates on flights (800 point minimum earn vs 1000 etc) so any additional ways to earn for spending I already do is welcomed by me.
If they are doing this to sell, I'm ok with that. If thats what they need to do to save the airline who am I to protest it. I'd rather an airline I trust that charges me more than one I can easily afford and don't trust… It still gives me more ways to earn that are useful to me, so I guess I am the target audience… and I like it. EpiQure is not for me, I don't drink, Golf might be for me, but Ebay is certainly bringing a smile to my face and as far as gifts go, I buy a lot at DJ's so getting extra rewards above just credit card earn…
I heard this site was about a year in the making, so they took something away at the start of the year and now they are giving something back.
I have 0 engagement with the Virgin Velocity program, but I think this is a good sign not bad.
But then I do love QF and my QFF points so maybe I am biased lol.
