Did you end up getting a projector yet? I do remember when I got iPhone that there was a cable that did video out. I always through that would be good for hotels as it would be a simple matter to plug into the TV. Sure not as nice as a projector but deals with the risk that there may not be a suitable surface to project on.

One quick clarification - not all the software comes from Apple - it is only sold by Apple.

And yes I would in fact. If MS could give some assurance that the software didnt cause regular crashes and didnt contain significant virus/trojan risk.

The App store and eco system makes my life simpler and that is a good thing.

The only issue I have is hat not all apps come with a free trial version so I have wasted a few dollars on apps that are not great (mind you significantly less $ than I have wasted on Xbox 360 games that were cough).

I wouldn't. There is a HUGE difference between provding a store and FORCING people to use a store to get their software. Personally, I much prefer to be able to obtain software from any source and not have to have it approved by an OS vendor.

Like with iphone where various utilities to use voip on an iphone were barred from access by Apple

Oh I see we’re getting back into the "I don’t like the Apple-store ecosystem, but I knew it was there when I bought my iPhone and it didn’t stop me" argument.

It’s not "open" but it works very well.

The facts about Windows are that it’s ALWAYS been open, to anyone and anything that you or someone else might install on your system. If they changed that now there’d be furore and anti-trust suits everywhere, but the iOS eco-system has also ALWAYS been closed. They never had it open to all and then changed it after they’d locked in customers. So you can’t compare it to Windows, it’s no where near, and never will be.

The argument used a few posts above is the same old rhetoric. I’m not a fanboy, I just enjoy all my things working together really well and I’m on this side of the fence now, but I believe there’s a certain amount of fanboy-ism on the other side in this thread.

The apple anti consumerism on software would stop me getting an iphone in itself , but when I was buying a phone the iphone failed in all the core requirements I needed anyway before I even realised about that

I am sitting on both sides of the fence, I love my Lenovo x200 tablet with integrated 3G, 10 hour battery life which I purchased last month for $1200, it is heavier than an IPAD but has a 12" screen, 128Gb SSD and great hand writing recognition but also love my touch for when I am not working or just want to chill out. Consumers benefit from competition, bring it on I say!

iPAD Opinons

I'm very happy with my $330 Acer Aspire1 for travel. 160Gbyte HD, 1 Gbyte of Ram, 1.6Mhz - it does what I need. It's 6 months old and runs XP. It's quite light and I get 4½ life out of it when watching movies.

Would I would get an iPad to replace it - not this year, maybe not next. To me the failure to provide any general form of physical media connection is a significant flaw. It really a large iPhone in that respect.

The whole USB thing is a non-issue for me. All my media is on iTunes and easily synched to the iPad.

The x200 tablet looks nice but is significantly heavier - 3.57lbs vs 1.6lbs... I think my X301 laptop is less than 3.57lbs...

I have the X300 as well as the tablet, but the battery life is not as good as the tablet and surprisingly the lack of a card reader annoys me not to mention the poor processor performance.

I was skeptical of Apple being able to deliver the battery life with the iPad given their issues in the past and I am glad to see I am wrong, there is every chance my next platform will be an iPad once the new screen and multitasking is part of the scene.

I don't use itunes for movies - I simply copy, then load the movies/programs I may wish to watch on a trip to the hard drive.

Two words. Jail break. The US government has now also deemed jailbreaking is legal.

The app community for jailbroken iphones is huge and thriving. There's a large range of free and paid apps in it.

Android is just as restrictive, in fact it's worse for paid app developers (there are very few countries that are able to sell developed apps).

.

Even if I was prepared to go to that hassle, as mentioned and deal with the will warrany be honoured issues, there are enough other reasons for not using iphone for my purposes and will happily stick with nokia

I believe jail breaking causes issues with the warranty though, e.g. if needing any warranty work done you need to unjailbreak it ; and even once done I'm not sure if they can tell you have actually done so and still refuse ?

By a number of reports Apple aren't generally refusing to service jailbroken phones unless it is a software issue.

Medhead no projector yet due to the air con coughping itself and $600 on dog surgery and $1500 on medical tests for me ... Joyous times...

I think the issue apple doesn't want to get to is users jailbreaking and running software that apple didn't approve because it could harm the device (like the battery) and then have to provide free replacements (within warranty) because users misused their devices knowingly.

Plus, most users that jailbreak pirate apps that they'd ordinarily have to pay for.

Works really well? Tell that to all the suckers like me who installed the latest OS on iPhone 3GS. Constantly unresponsive. Crashing. Umm works well!

Maybe that is the plan to "help" me decide to upgrade to 4 ;)

So a $50 cable might be a stop gap, if it works with iPad.

Dog surgery! Many years ago a friend actually insured their dog (i rolled my eyes at the time) but it covered things like surgery.
