Hi Fiona - where did you get the prepaid micro-sim for Telecom NZ?

I am off to WLG and AKL shortly and would like to get one as soon as I land (or better still get a micro sim from someone who has one and isnt usng it any more...)

Hi Simon it isn't a micro sim. I wanted my iPad ASAP so bought a wi-fi only one in NYC. I am running all devices via My Zone which takes regular sim. Will try to check out Telecom NZ for you tomorrow re: micro sims for iPad.

There is nothing stopping you from 'cutting down' a regular sim to fit it into your iPad - just find a generic data prepaid plan and use that sim.

With the iPad not actually released in NZ until "July sometime" you may not even find the carriers are ramped up for it's release.

Vodafone won't even release their plans until "the coming weeks". Telecom NZ has nothing on their site about the iPad.

I really think you'll be sadly disappointed. And yes, I still hate the iPad, even though I've used it several times, and like usual my bias is apparent, but I try to give correct information when dealing with factual posts.

The iPad has not been released in NZ yet, I would suggest the portable 3G router might be the way to go as apparently local microsims are hard to come by:

Travelling to NZ - Prepaid NZ microsim? - iPad
In my ignorance I didn't know that there were no ipads in NZ. I would definitely recommend anyone travelling regularly to get a My Zone or other 3G wi-fi router. It's great to be able to drop in a local pre- paid sim and run all devices from it.

Hiya - I noticed some chatter about India... I will be heading there in a week (for a week, followed by a week in HK), with new iPad 3G in hand.

Any suggestions for cheap sim cards for data in India??
Likewise a pointer to a cheap sim for data in HK would be nice too...

Cheers.

Hong Kong is the same as NZ, its not released yet so you will need to trim a normal SIM . The three option maybe the go, all you can eat at a daily or monthly rate

On that topic - any suggestions for pico projectors?

I have quite a bit of experience testing pico projectors and, depending on your budget and needs, I would recommend the newer AAXA and Optoma units such as the AAXA P2 or M1+ for most applications. They are a bit more expensive than the first generation projectors, but they offer much greater brightness, making them much more usable.

Thanks Beaches. This would be primarily for personal use when travelling to watch Tv/Movies in the hotel and occasionally for presentations with my team (so not not needing highest quality).

Any suggestions on a retailer in Oz?

Also iPad coming to NZ on 23 July so hopefully pre-paid micro sims will be available soon...

I could be offbase here Simon, but the only place with stock (in Melbourne) a few weeks ago was either JB Hifi or the official Apple store.

For the projectors?

That is what I was looking for...

Thats what I thought and I read the response as referring to IPADs!

I am surprised that this thread has not picked up on this :

IPAD owners are six times more likely to be wealthy, highly educated and sophisticated 30-50 year olds who value power and achievement.
They're also selfish and unkind, according to a survey of 20,000 people conducted by US consumer research firm MyType.

I would very much like to be six times wealthier, educated and being 30-50 again would be fine. No wonder they call it a magical device. Going out to get one now.

I am still amazed at the iPad hate by people who don't own one (reading through the comments).

Biggest gripes are a lack of USB (I havent missed that) and the ability to install whatever software you want. I am finding that being able to grab the software I need from the app store as a reliable source (no hidden nasties) to be a much easier way to get stuff than trawling the net looking for the right piece of software.

Overall my only gripe to date is that I would love a good stylus and handwriting recognition App. I do not miss the forward facing camera as I think the iPad would be too heavy for prolonged use so I will resort to an iPhone 5 next year (whilst buying an iPhone 4 for my mum to use as well).

The camera is something they should definitely have put on it . I Skype the kids when away and the iPad would have been perfect for this. Cynical me thinks that the reason Apple didn't do this was because of the video calling on iPhone 4. Suppose I will have to line up v early on Friday as my local T life is getting hardly any stock :(

I do think the iPad is too heavy to hold for a 60-90 minute video conference (that's my Sunday evenings skyping to Cyprus). Although perhaps you would use the case/stand.

Would you be supportive if Microsoft decided to make windows unable to download software and only allowed obtaining software from Microsoft and not even allowed to load it on from media?

These restrictive practices that Apple practice are dismal imo

Dave

One quick clarification - not all the software comes from Apple - it is only sold by Apple.

And yes I would in fact. If MS could give some assurance that the software didnt cause regular crashes and didnt contain significant virus/trojan risk.

The App store and eco system makes my life simpler and that is a good thing.

The only issue I have is hat not all apps come with a free trial version so I have wasted a few dollars on apps that are not great (mind you significantly less $ than I have wasted on Xbox 360 games that were cough).
