Simon or anyone else - do you have any apps you'd recommend for linking/remoting to a PC from the iPad. I have a Windows Vista Home edition laptop and want to connect to it from my iPad. I've found LogMeIn, it's AUD37, and requires LogMeIn accounts to be set up and services run to access the laptop.

Are you using any other app or apps that you'd recommend?

Thanks!

I've found that to be a good solution, unless you want to setup RDP and download an app that supports that. LogMeIn is certainly the easier way that "just works" though.

... The article was actually really balanced and comes up with a number of good points on the whole tablet issue. ...
I actually did not find the article balanced. It did extrude a theme of "MS haven't come to terms with iPhone type devices so they probably won't again (& if they do there'll be no adequate software for a windows based device anyway)."

I find Balmer to be too much of a business person rather than a technical evangelist, a bit like John Sculley to be frank, shareholders really need a mix of both in the CEO of a tech company for it to be successful, or have a two in the box scenario in terms of leadership and business processes like Intel with Grove and Barrett in the 90's.

Works really well? Tell that to all the suckers like me who installed the latest OS on iPhone 3GS. Constantly unresponsive. Crashing. Umm works well!

Maybe that is the plan to "help" me decide to upgrade to 4 ;)

I have no issues with iOS 4 on my 3GS and am really missing iOS4 on my iPad.

I just remembered now that I have that cable at home... D'oh...

EDIT

I am in NZ at the moment. i had a Vodafone micro sim delivered to the hotel all working fine. I opted for 3 gig for NZ$50 as i am back again in a couple of weeks.

Just now need to find micro sims in India...

Even if I was prepared to go to that hassle, as mentioned and deal with the will warrany be honoured issues, there are enough other reasons for not using iphone for my purposes and will happily stick with nokia

It takes a few minutes to jailbreak it. All done online. Not difficult.

Warranty issues? Restore it by clicking a single button. Problem solved.

You're of course welcome to stick to your Nokia:)

I believe jail breaking causes issues with the warranty though, e.g. if needing any warranty work done you need to unjailbreak it ; and even once done I'm not sure if they can tell you have actually done so and still refuse ?

Jailbreak simply gives you privileged access to the iOS on the device. Restoring it via iTunes (by clicking the 'Restore' button) wipes and re-installs the original iOS (or the current version whichever is later) and it's as good as new.

I used to jailbreak my iPhone all the time. The few that had problems i'd restore, take back to Apple, and it was swapped out on the spot. No problems whatsoever.

I'm not so sure that jailbreaking will get rid of the network lock.. happy to be corrected though!

It's not a connection speed issue. Just the latest update has made my iphone a lot like windows, worse even. It is just flaky, unresponsive on starting Apps - you know sits there thinking for a while. Crashed out of Apps lots at first this has got better with the minor update and with App updates. But AFF app crashed 3 times today, constantly has connection issues, tells me I have an old plugin, tells me I'm not logged in, tells me that I have pending actions (that always gets me, because it could be true  ). This pretty much matches issues that others have been having. It is getting better, but damn annoying and, of course, the update removed the ability to roll back to an earlier OS.

Well down on the sims.

I was skyping to my brother last night, he asked me if I had an ipad yet. Also quizzed me on the Mini. I think I might have converted him to a Mini for HTPC.

If your iPhone is that slow (4.0/4.0.1 iOS on a 3G is shocking but it's fine on all the 3GS's i've used), did you do an upgrade or a full restore? I'd recommend putting it into DFU mode and doing a full restore from scratch. Fixes things up nicely (do a search on google for iPhone 3GS DFU restore and it'll show you how to do it).

Correct. The easiest way to unlock is to phone Telstra, tell them you want it unlocked. They'll try charge you $150. You can either say a) "I am going overseas and would like to have my phone unlocked so I can use it whilst over there" or b) "I have lots of services with you and would like you to waive the fee as I spend so much with you". Either should work.

Normally once you've had the phone/service for either 6 or 12 months (or ... X number of months) they'll happily unlock it for free anyway.

Telstra won't. It's $150 unless you can talk your way out of it. They will unlock it at the end of your contract or MRO (if not on a contract) free of charge.

If you're on Optus on contract, it's free. If you're on pre-paid, it's $80 (once off re-charge or an outright fee).

Vodafone is done online and iirc it's $25. Go to website, enter IMEI and CC number, and it's pretty much done.

Not sure about 3.

Thanks I'll check it out.

I think I might have stuffed up as I may only have a 3G. 3GS came out around about when i got my phone. I might have blocked out from my memory buying it just before the new one was released. I'll double check that when home on Friday.
