iPhone / iPod Touch applications?

Thanks will check out the other thread. But I'm slowly working through the Whirlpool thread on the topic as well.

BTW I already have a stand alone device, which is why I already own europe map, just was hoping that Tom Tom home might work with the iphone app, to load or the extras. Bit annoying to have to keep buying the map that is already owned - since that is the major cost with these things.

We have two, too.

I was wondering how they'd handle updates through the years, at what stage they'll stop supporting the app available now and make you buy a whole new app for new and updated maps. I reckon they should be able to give at least a years worth of map updates though. I guess at some stage they need to make you re-purchase.

As for TomTom Home, I'd imagine the app is protected from being able to be accessed through that application, as Apple likes to have their closed system. Not great for a GPS, but then, if you want the best experience, the actual device would give it best.

It gets a little tricky when you're driving, but I've successfully typed out an SMS on the motorway.

Should you really be advocating breaking the law by doing this while driving?

As an update - I got my iPhone on Friday finally :) Now just loading up some of those apps I could use before...

I am not sure on the TomTom at the moment. I do love convergence but I would like to hear of someone using this effectively first...

*cough* I meant to say, it could be done hypothetically. ;)

I'd get it, but am gonna wait for the car kit as that's an important part of the app.

Simongr, i d/l this as soon as i found it was out and have been using it around here, where i know where i'm going. It has routed me the correct way to everywhere i have asked it too including to home which has 2 different ways to go. One is the shortest but longest time route, the other one is longer distance but shorter time so you can see what the GPS has issues with. It calculates routes in a matter of seconds and always gets a fix under 60 seconds, which does seem like a long time but isn't really. Well worth the $100 they ask imo and i just hope that they don't want another $100 or whatever next year for updated maps or something...

Thanks for the advice about ReQall - it is a very useful program and i can see it being very powerful too, the only thing i do have to ask is - is there a way to get ReQall to put it into my tasks? I was, until i went to the iPhone, a very heavy user of tasks to remind me to do stuff and i still havent found a useful task program.

If you dont have a lot of recurring appointments, like me who has about 70 a week, another awesome program with fantastic developers that i use is Pocket Informant
. Great tech support when something does go wrong and all in all a very polished program for the iPhone. I used to use it on WM2003-6 but after 9 years of development on that platform it was off the show but the iPhone version still has a while to go but good nonetheless.

I use Autozoid for keeping track of my cars costs and economy etc.

I use Evernote for my notekeeping. This is mainly because its across the BB/iPhone/internetaccesibility so whereever i am i can see my notes which has come in very handy in the past.

Ozweather for weather as it takes it data from BOM rather than wherever the inbuilt weather app gets it from which is almost always wrong.

Timetracker for keeping track of time on the job - very handy if you reckon you have misquoted and want to double check, the last update enabled you to keep track of 2 times at once which makes it even better.

Twitterfon - not the best twitter client out there but good enough for me.

Ebuddy for a one stop look at all my account like bank, cc, most of my FF accounts. There isnt a whole lot of Aussie vendors on there yet but when they hop on board it will be awesome!

Facebook - for those of you not on FB lets jsut say that this one does get a bit of a workout. To those of you on FB - enough said.

Google - My life is with google so this in one of the most used apps. From calendar to contacts to RSS to docs and everything in between.

QF009, if you're trying to work out BB vs iPhone. I have both and would say that the iPhone wins hands and pants down. I have the BB Bold which is supposed to be the fastest etc. but honestly it is absolute garbage. I dont use it for too many phone calls as its attached to a number that not many people call on yet and the battery still only lasts me from 8ish till 1ish in the afternoon and im not on it that much. Maybe an hour of Twitter/FB/general surfing/email/texts etc. and its a shame becuase it has a really powerful phone program. I spend more time waiting for the spinning disk than actually using it and mostly get so frustrated with it that i end up using the iPhone.

I have a simple test called the grandma test - it involves giving my mother a phone, giving her a quick lesson and letting her go for it. She was able to use the iPhone in about 10 mins effectively so then i gave her the BB and she didnt even bother with it coz it was so hard!

[/aside] I also have a 5 year old who raises eyebrows when she starts using our iPhones when were out. It keeps her quiet for hours on end and she knows what expected of her when she does play the games on it. It's hilarious the looks on peoples faces when she knows where to go and what to do with it! And when i upgrade to the 3Gs she'll get my old one (without SIM of course) as there are over 110 apps on it and theres a substantial amount on there for her.[aside]

As this is i think the biggest post ive ever made here I'll sign off now!

A couple of apps I thought might be interesting:

APODViewer lite - This shows the NASA picture of the day. Very usefull if your into that kind of thing. I am a bit but not enough to get the full app instead of he lite version.

Also Worldview which basically provides links to various webcams from around teh world. Again just an interest thing for me. Get to see webcam views from around the world where friends and family are living.

Now if only I could get the Remote app to work........

Thegurio... I use ToDo for tasks... Works really well. Syncs with pc and mac. Highly recommend.

Straitman... Rumour has it you've joined the smart people and have finally got an iPhone???

New apps...

Worldmate... Great for itineraries... We're just about to head off to the States and this is handling it all really well.

Rope n fly... Really silly but strangely addictive.

Couch to 5k... No doubt most have heard about this but now it's an App. Let's see if I'm running 5km's in 9 weeks time...

Well, I finally got suckered in and yesterday, I bought an iPhone 3Gs 32GB from telstra...

24 hours later...

This phone sucks.

It is a simple statement, and I will repeat it for those who didn't quite catch it before, This phone sucks...

Telstra cant be blamed - Apple can

7 hours of my normal day - the phone's dead. My normal day is numerous calls, no TXT, I have exchange pushing and did I mention this phone sucks?

Whats the contract cooling down period on a phone?

Battery life - poor
Bluetooth - wont even connect with a rental Ford falcon (latest BT system)

I feel like a total schmuck

Mr!

BTW - I have a 2 month old iPod 16GB to get rid of now... ebay here I come

That's why I never got one, I like my current situation of only needing to charge my phone once every 3-4 days. I do have a supplier who sells batteries that clip on to the iPhone, in a nice protective cover (so also protects the whole phone) if something like that is of interest PM me.

http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/review/mobile_phones/aigo/aipower_n6215/316612 - price is much cheaper than the RRP there.

Oh no, you actually thought the iPhone was a telephone? Spend some time in the App Store, find some apps that will save you time every day and use the powerful computer & web interface that you have purchased.

For extending the battery life, look for features you can turn off. Do you need wi-fi all day? Do you need bluetooth all day? Maybe reduce the screen brightness.

Give it a couple of weeks and let it grow on you - sort of like an Apple tree.

That's what's killing the battery. It's been reported to Apple, apparently they're working on a fix. I appreciate that's not helpful .. but there you go.

FWIW, mine lasts 2 days or thereabouts with normal usage.

I certainly can't imagine why you need or want exchange pushing turned on. To put it somewhat crudely - do you need to know that you got an email in the 10 minutes out of your day that you are dropping the kids off at the pool?

If you are waiting for something it is just as easy to fetch it. If you are not and are working on something for an hour or two the phone doesn't need to be constantly updating the email.

On the BT factor, I can't even get it to BT to my Apple computer, let alone a falcon (but will be trying in 2 weeks). I thought it was pretty widely know that BT on iPhone was not the full/real mccoy. Turn off BT to save some electrons.

Due to my brain being so full of GFC issues and StK issues (;)) I would forget to actually ask my phone to check for emails (you heathen), thats why the saint of computers - Bill Gates, invented push...

OK, a bit over the top, but my life revolves around communication, I have teams of workers in the field AU wide and email is the firm communicator - no mistakes...

My Samsung fake BB has managed to push me through life for a long time now, so did Mr. HTC before fake BB, and even before that, iTouch - for me push works fine (except on my new iPhone...)

Mr!

Ahh, I undeerstand now. That is important.
My "football" season ended 3 saturdays ago on subiaco oval. :( Rather glad I didn't book those tickets to see the wallabies in Tokyo. :(

FWIW...

Much like Mr. my life revolves around getting info asap and replying to it sooner. Therefore I have mine pushed via google and it checks every 20mins or thereabouts. If I need something sooner I'll check it but generally it doesn't. In normal use by about 1-2pm, if I'm out of the office or the car. Yes I agree this is unacceptable but with what this thing is capable of I don't mind. It's a trade-off for things just working. I too had Mr. HTC, and Mr. XDA before that. Both of those never actually synced nor worked like the iPhone does. Yes it does have it's foibles but all in all I think it's a good device. I am what they call a power user i.e. I don't put it down! I use it for almost ecerythingyou can think of and I'm thinking of upgrading to the 3gs when I am out of contract because so far there has been no real compelling reason to upgrade.

I also have Mr. BB (Bold). Personally I think that is the biggest load of garbage I have ever had the misfortune of owning. The battery life is even worse than the iPhone and I spend most of that battery waiting for it to catch up with me. I was hoping to use the BB for everything but phone calls and texts. Don't get me wrong me wrong, there are some very awesome features on the BB that I would love on the iPhone like call logging (both in and outgoing) and just general integration of everything. But all in all the iPhone kills the BB even with the lower battery life. I can see why people loge the BB's, after all the are THE phone in the business world, and I personally think, there is some status attached to having one. I suppose the only disclaimer to this is that I did take it back under warranty and they replaced it wih a brand new one no questions asked that is being picked up today so I'll reserve final judgement till after a week with the new one.

As an aside, this post was done on my iPhone as well...

The battery is the biggest issue with the iPhone but I am rarely more than 6 hours away from a charger so I dont see it as a major trauma.

MrP - apart from the battery - do you have any other issues with it?

Battery life is a big thing. I've taken to bringing a charger with me in my bag, and hope to get a car charger at some point. But wouldn't trade it for any phone, it's great to use.
