Is Platinum the Holy Grail?

I agree with the idea that they should treat all WP's equally but I am quite sure they do not.

Just with the provisio of the "Air" magazine we can tell they value WP's differently as I have received a couple of issues but not all.

Really, that is interesting. Personally I think the AIR magazine is a bit over the top. I would prefer different content in it, too much advertising, appears a medium to make money for them. Anyoen knwo how many times AIR has been released. I seem to recall seeign about 3, maybe 4 editions but cannot recall exact number I have received.

I hope that QF treat all WP the same. It would become quite hard to have an internal pecking order within platinum. You mgiht use points for awards, but you still purchase flights that earned those points remember. I always use my points basically to upgrade with the rare award flight. i prefer comfort on board as opposed to free travel.

My spend with QF through work and leisure - just for my flying is somewhere near the 100k mark a year and i am sure they treat a platinum that spends 20k the same way, well i hope they do as all platinums deserve to be treated equally IMO.
I have absolutely no doubt that they dont treat all WPs equally. The situation should be that all WPs have all the benefits of staus honoured but those that are worth more to QF get extra benefits-some obviously do being invited to be CL for example but no doubt there are quite a few who do not meet CL criteria but still are more valuable to QF than most of the other WPs.Again Opups are not a stated benefit but you would certainly think there is someway QF works out which WP gets it and it has been discussed here before.
This certainly is the case with other loyalty programs. With AA it is certainly documented to happen though criteria are unknown.Hhonors has made quite a mess of differentiating their Diamond elites in the last 12 months-just check on FT.

I do not class CL in the equation as they are invited and might not even do much flying them selves but are in a position of power etc. i doubt my 100k concerns QF too much, maybe I am wrong. I agree that op-ups should always be given to CL or WP first but I presume factors sometimes preclude this from happening and I have no issue with that. My point was that I hope you as a WP and me as a WP are treated the same and if required maybe length of beign a WP is considered.

I seriously doubt that WP's get treated equally, again its a "feature" of Altea to actually discern the differences between them.

Still, as above it has got some great advantages, but is it the holy grail? To some yes, to others, no.

Well I am certain that Qantas does not treat all Platinums the same. In fact I am also certain that some Qantas staff do not treat all passengers in a cabin the same.

I had an op-up on a BNE-SYD flight a couple of weeks ago. It was lightly loaded flight in business and I was in 2K with 2J empty. There were 2 flights attendants serving and on my side of the aircraft had a female flight attendant. I can see her studying the manifest while preparing the meals.

She served the elderly couple in 1JK and addressed them each by name and had a reasonable chat with them. When she came over to serve me she did not address me by name and it was quite nocticeable it was a hurried process. She then served the person behind me and addressed him by name and again had a chat with him and so on. I don't really care I did not get addressed by name but I felt I was treated differently because I was an op-up and it is rude and leaves a sour taste. How about some consistency in service? YMMV....

John,

That IS the Holy Grail, consistency. In one word that is what I want from all companies I deal with.

Hey JohnK. Is it POSSIBLE....that as you were op-up'd that your name was not on the manifest for that particular seat?

I would have found it quite rude if I was not addressed by name and those around me were. I have always been addressed by name when flying.

When I have received an op-up at the gate, I have been addressed at service by name so I am sure they knwo the name as th emanifest needs to have it. I wonder if the manifest actualyl shows op-up or liek on it???

I have thought this for a while and I am quite sure that the manifest shows award seats and points upgrades and I guess op-up's (never had one so don't know).

If that is the case then it is extremely rude by the attendant not to address everyoen equally and somethign I would write to qantas about.

This publication will be available only to the top one per cent of Qantas Frequent Flyers and will be mailed quarterly

Yes, Qantas treat WP members differently, regardless of the content etc, this is a clear example that QF regard some of us in another group altogether from the A, B and C's

Op Ups are indeed noted, along with the name of each passenger and their status.

I don't believe booking class is noted, nor if a PAX is on a point redemption upgrade.

The manifest containes all names on board, their status and their seat number. I realised later that she knew exactly what she was doing as she was studying the manifest for a few minutes before beginning dinner service.

the AIR magazine could be proof that they treat WP differently. I will write and rinf QF and see why i have nto been receiving all my copies of AIR and see what transpires.

Holy Grail? No.

For the money spent on DONE4s let alone unnecessary travel in general, I could have bought something really practical.

But travel is my hobby. I've had a great deal of joy out of whipping around the world, seeing online friends in the flesh, walking in places only read about, sipping spiced tomato juice or champagne as I cruise over exotic lands and seas.

Others spend tens of thousands on hotted up cars or yachts or collecting art or designer clothes.

Me, I'll look back in years to come and sigh happily. I've had some magic times.

Getting to and retaining WP has been a lot of fun. The benefits are nice, especially access to First lounges around the world. Starting off an international trip with a meal in the Sydney First is a cherished treat. I might be travelling in the back of the bus, but I'll climb aboard with a tummy full of good tucker and wine, and I'll wave away the tray of tasteless chicken and soggy veges that passes for a meal.

The other little perks are welcome. And quite possibly if it hadn't been for my WP status, I'd still be in Europe waiting for a flight home. The first onwards flight Qantas came up with was 9 May!

Especially washed down with some very good bubbly!

Mind you - I feel ready for anything on a long-haul flight after enjoying a nice massage in the Spa - between that and a couple of glasses of Dom, who needs a plane?

Which lounge are you getting your Dom from???? Only Moet, VdV and Tattinger in the QF SYD F lounge ...
