I have just been talking with a BA staff member who told me QF are leaving OW. I queried her but she was adamant that this is what BA staff have been told. Has anyone else heard this? Would red roo or other QF readers like to comment?

I doubt it ... its more likely a poor interpretation of the end of the QF/BA JSA in April.

Posted on a wing and a prayer ...

Partnerships are the new rage in the airline world versus local alliances, with the lack of complete uniformity of benefits it makes sense, so it is a possibility that One World and other alliances will lose members as airlines see gains without the overhead of an alliance elsewhere.

EK seems to taken this path a few years ago and therefore its preference for partnerships Vs. join alliances.

Indeed, as has the rest of the gulf airline industry.

Just seems odd QF sponsor MH to OW and QF leaves OW...

You need to look at the timeframes through, when that decision was made, an arrangement for QF to hookup with EK would have seemed odd!

True markis :) Hopefully MH will enter OW and stay there for a while :)

Anything is a possibility, and considering how nearly every other partnership is ending before the EK one starts, they might have requested Qantas leave OW, however I would assume that would be a deal breaker.

Normally I feel I have a little bit of a crystal ball when it comes to guessing what airlines are likely to do, but I didn't see this EK+QF tie up at all, so guessing the future of OW+QF I think will be very hard.

At this stage I think QF needs AA as a partner and perhaps a partner in South America, but as for the rest of OW? EK will serve the Europe and African markets on behalf of QF, QF and JQ's Asian offshoots will cover the Asian markets. But do they really need to be apart of OW to have partnerships with AA and LA?

I guess the other question is what about RTW tickets? Considering a large number of people will look to an alliance first for purchasing RTW, would not being part of OW mean that they lose this business? That said, how much does RTW tickets actually bring into QF?

The final question is does QF actually get value from OW? I remember once EK stating that alliances are only really good for that alliances major airlines, is QF a major enough airline within OW? There is no destination which can not be gotten to in the OW network (bar a couple of AU regional cities and CBR) which requires QF. For most peoples xONE3 QF wouldn't even come onto the radar. Is that really worth while considering what OW is effectively charging?

Given that EK will take over Qantas international in a matter of years.......

No with exception to a token kangaroo route and the odd TT flight, QFi and EK are in different markets. I don't see EK doing a AU-US any time soon.

OK, for context, where/when did this conversation take place?

As I have already posted, I still reckon it was just a Chinese Whispers¹ style misinterpretation confusing the end of the JSA after March with Qantas exiting *O.

I think that it is fair to say that the current three alliances have morphed out of original North Atlantic business interests.

And that a US-EU centric philosophy is not going to fit well with future strong emerging industry players, many of whom will want to have a more dominant say in the way things are done.

i think they will stay - selling JQ flights with QF code to OW partners is probably a nice little earner!!

One could always ask, is BA somewhat responsible for QF looking outside the OW family? Just thinking back to the QP access under BA confusion of a year or so ago (and some could say still ongoing because QP access hasn't really been restored under BA), it was about the last thing QF really needed when they where going head on against VA.
