Is upgrade for diamond member automatic?

I’m a diamond member with HHonors. Courtesy of Macq credit card..

I booked two stays in London, Conrad (4nts) and Hilton Paddington (2nts) using the status directly with them for April trip.

Straight away after booking, the app showed I have requested upgrade to next category room on each stay at $0. Which I believe is the standard status benefit.

However tonight when I checked again, the requested upgrade is not selected anymore. Instead there are options for payable upgrades.

Is this normal? Or should I email them to request upgrades?

Upgrades are applied either on the day or sometimes a day before arrival by the hotel. What you are seeing is the paid upgrade option which is available to all.

Agree. And for me, Asia is the only place where I consistently see a decent upgrade available for OLCI. Even then, I still usually wait and see if I get a better one at check-in.
 
Unfortunately, it’s not a guarantee. Some resorts (eg Hawaii, Maldives) are good with setting expectations by saying there are no upgrades and to book the room you want to avoid disappointment.

Enjoy the Conrad London. I got an upgrade there when I went. Really nice hotel.
 
Some hotels manage the free upgrades through the NOR1 process, which is why you will see it sometimes selected with $0 payable.
Never seen it grey out though.
 
Don’t worry about the next category upgrade, as diamond you’ll get it any if there’s space available.

From my personal experience with Conrad London you’ll get one level confirmed before check in and maybe Junior Suite on the day but since you stay 4 nights I wouldn’t count on more than one level.
