Interesting that the tower advised the Dash 8 they ‘are number 1’ and to hold short. The A350 was on short final at that stage still.

Wouldn’t the Dash be ‘number 2’?

They then cleared a second JAL aircraft to land, but reduce speed as one aircraft to depart (being that dash)
 
Condolences to the family of the affected and those lost (should not have trusted a no news website…)

Sky were saying the CG Dash 8 is not a regular operator at HND (google maps photo above only shows helos) and importantly was not ADS-B equipped.

This could be a critical point. HND’s taxiways are quite complex. Being unfamiliar certainly wouldn’t help.

No that was the report at the time (5 pers missing)

When they later said the five pax were ”accounted for”, some sadly assumed that meant they were alive, but it just meant they recovered their bodies from the wreckage.

Not sure if it was a translation issue or they wanted to inform the families first, but either way you can’t expect all the facts upfront in an incident like this.
 
Reports in The Australian of 12 Australian passengers on board the aircraft which makes sense given CTS is the hub for winter skiing activities and the JL flight would connect on to various QF and JL services to Australia later in the evening.

Most likely a cultural issue as the Japanese are very circumspect when talking about death. I understand that even when people are obviously dead, they are not declared dead 7ntil they have been examined at a hospital. I could be misinformed, but I was told this by an Aussie expat in Japan who had excellent language skills.

I must stop watching fake news and stick to AFF conjecture. 🤣
Probably more reliable. Sadly one of the worst sites is pprune. It can be good when actual pilots respond, but the vast majority of the responses are from people who have never been in front of a coughpit door. So, even though it claims to be the professional pilot network, it is a very long way from that.
 
JB.. Is there any research/reports on airport ground lighting and associated accidents and incidents ? (taxiways et al).
I always look about on touchdown/taxi and I was very surprised at the complexity of lights on a recent landing in Hnd.
OK i am just a bunny in the tube.. but at the same level as the folks up front and it all looked like a fairground to me...

It would seem that this is correct. Having a look at google images of the base there are photos of a dash in the hangar as well as a Gulfstream.

As @Seat0B says, this is very common Japanese news reporting where they're not supposed to say deceased until a doctor/coroner pronounces them dead.

Those familiar with how JP news report knew that they basically meant most likely dead especially watching that dash-8 explode on impact.
