This was booked into P class, before attempting to upgrade I checked that there was classic availability. I also got a price over $5000 to upgrade but this was not in P class, then the csm came back with $1478.80

Assuming there is FASA availability at the time of your JASA booking, which is more 'efficient': points on initial FASA booking or $$$ to upgrade from JASA ?

In this context, what's your cent-per-point rule of thumb ?

I was not clear from previous discussions if the FASA was available at the time of the JASA bookings and if so, why didn't you go for points FASA right from the beginning ?

For reference, points upgrade (SYD LAX) earning no F points or SCs costs 45,000 pts already - and many AFFers consider that to be a bargain.

I think often the cash component is indicative of good value versus points, especially compared to the upgrade lottery VS a guaranteed seat!

I agree that certainty of F upgrade (with cash) is better than the points upgrade lottery.

My question, however, was that if FASA had been available at time of JASA booking, what would be more 'efficient' : JASA followed by cash upgrade or straight up points-majority FASA booking (assuming of course you have points to spare) ?

I was not clear on that point from reading the previous posts.

I tend towards FASA booking right from the beginning: F certainty and not too many points (relatively) from JASA.

From my perspective it depends on the dollar component. It would have cost me another 128k in points for 2 pax to book a FASA each way, $1140 to upgrade my MEL > LHR JASA and $1478.80 to upgrade LHR > MEL. If I decided that it was too expensive for a cash upgrade I was going to cancel my JASA and then book a FASA. Was very happy with the MEL > LHR upgrade cost.

Nice work ;)

What's weird is that as a WP I was pre allocated 3F! All seats were available when I looked at the seatmap.
As an AA GLD I got pre allocated 2A :o
I think my next goal is to try all F seats, starting with 1A and working my way down

Ended up doing it again
Foolishly booked a QF127 JASA on the 747
By the time I realised it was ticketed, I called up and asked to change to A380 F - the first CSA could not do it, but could change to A380 J..
I tried the HUACA method and got it changed to A380 F.

Pre allocated 3F again

Are you able to do this on paid fares? I.e. company pays for business, can I ring and "cash upgrade" to F for a reasonable price, paying from my pocket? And would such a change therefore earn F pts/SCs?

I would say yes and yes but not entirely sure (never did it myself) so perhaps one of the gurus will enlighten us.

Hmm....I figured you could ring and pay the fare difference, but my pockets aren't that deep! But for ~$600 for a DXB-SYD I would be tempted by it, particularly if it earns F SCs.

You could ring and pay the fare difference between J and F but I'm pretty sure it would be the full cost between the two and no-where near as cheap as $600

Just to activate an old thread if I may.

Given the choice of a certain JASA (+ possible cash upgrade) and a certain FASA (for some additional 50,000 pts), what would you do ?

Points are aplenty (and WP also).

Personally, I'd go for FASA as it is a certain seat vs some lottery with the cash upgrade.

But given this thread, it appears there may be some AFFers who prefer the cash-upgrade route from JASA.

Am I missing something ?

Thanks in advance.
