Jetstar Delays/Cancellations

Does anyone have an inkling as to why so many JQ flights (to/from DPS particularly) are being cancelled due to “engineering requirements?”
I have a friend who was due to fly today (1st Feb) but has been rebooked to the 5th of February. Having a scroll through the JQ Facebook page and various Bali FB groups reveals a wave of “engineering issues?”

That's a terribly long delay for your friend.

As far as I can see, all 11 JQ B788s are operating flights or have just come in this morning (Sunday 3 February) on one.

MEL_Traveller raised the question some weeks ago as to whether JQ has sufficient aircraft to operate all its published schedules.

As noted above, three of the 11 aircraft are or have been badly late. This is obviously affecting schedules but MEL_Traveller's question remains a valid concern.

I couldn't recommend using JQ (especially from MEL) to or from DPS as the schedules seem not to be adhered to in practice. The MEL - HKT route is also not great in this regard, but SGN, HNL and even CGO have been affected.

It's surprising that the media has not picked up on this given the large number of hostile Facebook posts on the Jetstar (Australia) Facebook page that comment on constant cancellation (and rebooking several days hence) of JQ's international flights.

Alan Joyce needs to explain why his money making subsidiary is leaving so many passengers in the lurch.

Also on Sunday 3 February 2019, JQ507, the 0825 hours SYD down to MEL with A321 VH-VWN airborne at 0920 should arrive at 1034, 34 late.

Continuing with 3 February, chaos on the MEL - DPS route is continuing with JQ35 becoming JQ1035. Instead of departing at 1855 tonight, it has been altered to leave at 1035 on Monday 4 February.

JQ37, the 1445 hours mid afternoon MEL - SYD - DPS flight is predicted to depart at 1730.

The normal mid afternoon arrival of JQ64 from SGN has blown out more with the latest prediction 0410 hours on Monday 4 February.

Due to yesterday's late northbound, JQ68 from the mainland Chinese city of almost 10 million, CGO, should arrive in MEL at 2215 tonight, 565 minutes late.

JQ1036 from DPS (normally JQ36) is forecast to be in its arrival bay at MEL at 2310 hours tomorrow night (4 February), 980 minutes late.

The HKT to MEL flight JQ18 is arriving at 1825 tomorrow, a predicted 375 minutes late.

Chaos!

JQ35 on Monday 4 February 2019 from MEL to DPS, the 1855 hours is to be delayed overnight with changed departure at 0700 on Tuesday 5, so yet another day when this flight will not depart on its scheduled day.

When will it end?

JQ521 (1725 hours SYD - MEL airborne at 1843 with A320 VH-VQG) is arriving at 2000 hours, an hour tardy.

Monday 4th of Feb sees JQ832 MEL-PPP (A320 VH-VFK) diverting to MKY. As such, the return JQ831 PPP-MEL departed at 14 04, with tentative arrival at 17 50, 125 min tardy.

...The HKT to MEL flight JQ18 is arriving at 1825 tomorrow, a predicted 375 minutes late..

JQ18 arrived in MEL on Monday 4 February at 1753, a little earlier than predicted although still very much delayed.

The all day delayed JQ1036 is still arriving tonight at 2310, while on Tuesday 5, JQ36 from DPS is predicted to arrive in MEL at 0845 hours, 55 late. The latter should form JQ43, the scheduled 1005 hours midmorning back to DPS that is likely to depart a little late.

JQ428 (Monday 4 February 2019, the 2145 hours SYD up to OOL with A320 VH-VFY) took off at 2235 so predicted arrival is 2242 hours, 37 late.

Tuesday 5 February 2019 has JQ172, the 0615 hours early morning CHC to MEL that was in the sky at 0654 (A320 VH-VFD) arriving at 0838, 38 minutes behind the schedule.

With a storm about to hit Melbourne, JQ516, the 1615 hours MEL up to SYD (A321 VH-VWN) was airborne at 1713 with arrival suggested as 1827 hours, 47 late.

JQ521 (1725 hours SYD - MEL airborne at 1813 with A320 VH-VQK) should arrive post-holding at 1956, 56 late.

JQ35 (6 February 2019, 1855 hours evening MEL - DPS, B788 VH-VKD) took off at 2021 so arrival should be at 2247 tonight, 62 late.

The MCY - MEL JQ797 (A320 VH-VGI) should arrive at 2058, 58 late.

The 1640 hours BNE down to MEL took off at 1726 with VH-VGO. JQ569 arrival should be at 2108, 63 minutes tardy.

With ferocious looking Sydney storms bearing down at about 1845 hours on Friday 8 February 2019, many planes were in a holding pattern as at 1855.

JQ526 (1710 hours MEL - SYD) took off at 1847 (about 25 late) with A320 VH-JQL suggested as arriving at 1916, 41 late, but this estimate is unlikely to be met.

JQ722, the 1625 hours HBA - SYD was in the sky at 1712 with VH-VFI. Arrival should be at 1923 hours, 73 late in theory, but probably not in practice.

In more on Friday 8 February 2019, JQ143 (1940 hours SYD across to CHC, A320 VH-VGU) took off at 2125 so will be more than an hour late.

JQ821 (Friday 8 February, the 1730 hours BNE down to SYD airborne at 2035) has A320 VH-VGT and is arriving at 2247, 162 late.

Anyone know what's happened to passengers on JQ823 the 7:40pm BNE-SYD? Stranded in BNE?

JohnK, so many other flights have been cancelled it is unlikely that passengers on the also flicked JQ823 would obtain a seat on another flight.

There must be many stranded tonight in major east coast airports in particular. If it was a Saturday or Tuesday night, the effect might not be widereaching. But God decided to open the heavens at (around?) 1830 AEDT and you've seen the result.

I am far from a climate or weather expert but even where I live in Melbourne, summer storms are the only time I've ever experienced difficulty in travelling (or at home) due to wet weather. Fog: another story, but it seems in Sydney and Melbourne that winter storms just don't tend to wreak the havoc that ones in December to February do. Counter intuitive, and if you can show I am wrong, well and good.

AFFers would love to hear from anyone unfortunate enough to have to spend the night at an east coast Australian domestic airport tonight. How was your experience?

My experience is currently awful. Still stuck on tarmac and I'm sore and tired.

If I recall correctly the bad weather in SYD on Fridays has been occurring regularly for the last 6 months or so or is my memory poor?

I don't usually book the last flight of the night but I've been busy this week and this was a late booking and I wanted to give myself some time.

We tend to remember especially great, or very bad, experiences in life, especially on subjects in which we take an interest.

There haven't been Sydney storms every Friday night but without laboriously going back through these pages, or looking at BOM records online, there have been multiple occasions on Friday nights in the last half year when this has occurred. I'd suggest at least three to four times: a lot.

Just to balance matters, at times there've been storms in Melbourne. Whether on Friday nights, I plead 'can't recall.'

So your mind is still sound, JohnK.
