Jetstar turn back; Failed to Get Authorisation

Australia needs to introduce laws similar to the EU for compensation, when delays and errors are as a result of airline incompetence. Sorry, a $200 travel credit is insufficient for these passengers who would be out of pocket for accomodation, tours etc. Maybe a $200 credit and a full or partial refund on the fare paid. Airlines are quick to take our money for missed flights, cancellation fees etc. It’s irrelevant that QF group have to pay for hotels, so they should, it’s QF groups fault.

Though in this case, the issue was not so much about compensation. Have passengers complained about compensation?

But I agree that airlines have a power imbalance. They can cancel and refund tickets seemingly at will but the passenger is unable to

I would absolutely be asking for compensation. It’s bad enough flying them in the first place but to turn around and return home would leave passengers out of pocket and some possibly considerably depending on circumstances.

inadequate
That I would agree with.
EU261 would have been €600 cash instead of a $200 voucher (plus meals/accom/trips in vain/transport).

There is no compensation under EU261 for unused third party bookings.

In this case there might be enough wiggle room for JQ to say they did everything correctly and it was Indonesian recalcitrance that was the cause (EU261 exceptional circumstances clause). Though from a political point of view I’m not sure if JQ would want to publicly state that.

I understand but I think JQ did provide compensation - meal vouchers, airport transport costs, $200 vouchers, hotel accom.
Who wants meal vouchers, airport transfers and accomodation at your departure city, that’s not why you booked. This is the minimum expectation. This shouldn’t form any part of the overall compensation.

It is under EU261. And it’s separate to the cash compensation which is really for the passenger’s inconvenience.

In summary the JQ compo:
$200 voucher for passenger inconvenience
+ meals/accom/transport

The EU261 compo:
€600 cash for passenger inconvenience
+ meals/accom/transport

I’d be happier with $200 cash from JQ than a $200 voucher

Flight plans include the aircraft type. They cannot be otherwise, as the same software that produces the pilots navigation plan also produces the flight plan. More likely the department that greases palms weren’t informed of the late need to pay a ‘fine’ for forgetting to cross a ‘t’ on a paper form.
I really don’t know who is telling the truth here now. The latest rumour is the runway was closed due works between 1am-6am. I cannot find a NOTAM to confirm that.

That still does not change the fact that JQ Operations screwed up.

Uganda is this century easier to enter if a little bit of US paper is submitted along with your passport.
I would never try the Vegas sandwich trick at Immigration in a foreign country, especially one in Africa! Good luck to you Ron.

Made on the same booking as a Jetstar flight? Good luck to anyone trying that :)
Separate tickets. Done it plenty of times, although I always allow at least 24 hours stopover in the outbound leg to commence the trip starting DPS (or anywhere else in Asia for that matter) for any sort of delays. I usually cut if fine to a few hours on the return leg and lean on “reasonable“ clauses in my travel insurance if things don’t work out.

I don’t think EU261 would be applicable in this case, even as part of a longer itinerary. The flight is not operated by an EU carrier.
EU261 would be applicable if the trip originated out of an EU country so something like CDG > LHR > SIN > SYD > MEL > DPS. Now how many people would be crazy enough to take that routing to get from CDG to DPS? Probably not many!

I can't imagine that too many people, if any, on this Jetstar flight would be doing so as part of a relevant broader itinerary.
On my last JQ DPS-ADL flight there were several EK codeshare customers connecting AMS-DXB-DPS-ADL.
