Jetstarisation of CNS Routes

This decision makes no sense to me.

Cairns at times is bad enough with the backpackers and I would hate to think what would happen if it was filled with bogans. Not the type of tourist destination I would want to visit....

Mr JohnK this decision makes no sense to anybody, considering the amount of replies to this thread, especially considering the routes (and more specially the times) they removed.

Johnk - I completely understand your sentiment.

I will say though that the backpackers (whilst not everyone's cup of tea), enormously support the local economy. There are many, many people who would be out of work if it wasn't for them.

As far as the extra JQ flights are concerned - I'm fully supportive of them increasing flights from Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. More bums on seats (ie. net increase in capacity) is an excellent thing, an the leisure market wants budget fares.

Replacing existing QF flights is a separate issue as we all understand so clearly.

To those querying why the lunchtime flights weren't replaced..... QF quite often runs the 767 on the midday flights so I imagine they have a higher average occupancy.

As I've stated however - 921/932 have always been well utilized anytime I've been on them.

Maybe this is also part of the story - retirement of B767 fleet and not enough new B738's & A330's arriving to maintain capacity.

932 have always been well utilized anytime I've been on them.

I'm often on QF932 on Friday (and to lesser extent Thursday) night flights and it's always >90% load, if not 100%, and often has obviously large portion of people heading to CNS for leisure for the weekend.. including a high proportion of Chinese pax. Obviously I don't know what the loads are like on other nights, but I can't understand why they are dropping this service. HOPEFULLY, it's just a temporary measure while they move aircraft to other schedules in attempt to maintain the oft-quoted (60%?) line in the market-share pie, staving off DJ's serious entry into the competition in this market, but unfortunately, I feel it's an overall retraction of QF services from non-high-profit Business markets, such as the Golden Triangle.

Unfortunately, when I consider my currently weekly Monday QF799 CNS-BNE commute, which often has <60% load, except in peak periods such as holidays, I wonder if this route will also be under the microscope for even further future Jetstarisation :(

Just rang the QF premium desk.
Conversation went something like this:
Me "I said I understand QF have removed some flights on some current tickets I have and replaced with J*"
The agent looked at the booking and said "no, it is still a QF flight".
Me "ummm according to the booking engine, if I try to book for these dates, the flights have vanished".
Agent "ummm are you sure ... ok let me recheck" ... I can hear tap, tap, tap of the keyboard
Agent "yes this flight has been removed and we haven't started to reallocate passangers as yet. You can have QF926 13:25 flight departing Syd ?"
Me "no that is not suitable ... how about the QF546 SYD > QF786 BNE > CNS ?"
Agent "let me have a look ... ok I will arrange for that to be re-ticketed"
Me "ok thanks. bye".

So for the moment I'm going to take the flights up with the extra bunny hop. A few more SCs unless I choose to change my mind and cancel the lot. Gives me time to plan.
But for new bookings, we will no longer use this route.

There is the flipside to the equation, a chance for extra SCs for those that want to remain with QF. ;)

Outside of re-booking existing bookings at $n/c, then these extra SCs would cost points / dollars I presume to route via BNE. All past experience for SYD to CNS via BNE always seems to want to cost more. So may be not such a great thing long term.

Not viable.

This will cost more.

Unless QF is prepared to offer CNS-BNE-SYD at the previous CNS-SYD price points (which I highly doubt).

Why is anyone surprised that more routes are moving to Jetstar ?

It's only going to continue!

Jetstar need to place those "200" A320's somewhere..................

Thanks - So the figures are correct then in that case, which makes it interesting that QF are "risking" the loss of higher yielding customers to VA much like at OOL ....

I assume that QF know that most people will just fly with JQ instead of QF

Is that last sentence correct? Shouldn't it read "I Know that QF will assume that most people will just fly with JQ instead of QF"

Assume/Know - I am sticking with "know" but should have said VA at the end.

QF will know that most people will stick with JQ instead of moving to VA......

QF have no doubt crunched the numbers based on what happened in OOL (although the changes here at CNS) are different.... Just a slight reduction in services and not a total pullout........

Added to that, the higher wages, etc etc on a Qantas operated aircraft VS JQ.... Even the loss of a few higher fares may not make up the difference in operating costs........

Slightly off topic but TSV and CNS have no VA lounge.

Mky got a lounge a few month's ago.
