Jump queue at X-ray? [others not ready, you are]

It's not really queue jumping, is it? They aren't in the queue until ready, before that they are just wasting space. It's like someone buying their groceries vs filling their trolley still.
I see in Mel just now we now have the snake line installed. I think that makes people consider it a queue even if not prior.

Just did this at SYD priority line. Lots of stupid people ahead of me wondering what to do. I just walked ahead, put my backpack down and walked through to looks of disgust.

I don't care, I don't beep and the security guard appreciated a quick clearance.

My wife & friends and I discuss this as we weave through the passenger zombies who seems to think it's a strange and mysterious practice. It bemuses me to think that most people would be aware of the general security protocol (both domestic and international), yet they seem ill-prepared to briskly move through security. When they get to the belt only then do they decide to take off their watch and then proceed.....opps....., forgot that laptop....... so they take out the laptop and now head to the secur......hang on.....have to remove my keys and phone from my pocket, better add those into the tray, now on to......hold it! Gotta dispense that one litre bottle of hand sanitiser they're carrying...... and so on.

Morale of the story is the queue shouldn't be a meritocracy for those who arrive at it first. ;-)

I was behind a lady at Sydney who made a huge performance of putting her possessions in the tray. She then went through the metal detector, returned, removed her jewelry, and then went through the second time successfully. I got delayed by an explosives test so found myself still behind her up the escalator to the business lounge, whereupon she turned right and disappeared into the chairman's lounge.
One can only wonder!

What I find fascinating is that many of these apparent strangers to security have passports gripped in their hands. How can you be a tourist in Australia and not have at least a passing acquaintance with security scanning?

With DSC non plats are now plats. Plats in SC only without the requisite airport experience.....

Unless that WP happens to have done only 1 flight in their lives, a SYD-LHR return in fully paid F during a DSC promotion (do it with 2 different flight numbers there and back = instant WP), they have been on more than 1 flight. It doesn't take long to get the airport procedures down pat.

I'd be going with combinations of unprepared, or borrowed bag.

Generally my pockets have already empty by the time I leave the lounge. My belt is off whilst in the queue and just before I get to the bench my shoes are off.All this because I know I am going to be wanded because of my knee.
Then if only 1 or 2 behind me or obviously organised people I will motion them through as usually the lane is closed until someone is ready to wand me.Honourable exceptions for premium lines at BNE and MEL.There often the security notices my taking off of shoes and that I have been carrying my belt and proactively get someone over to wand me so that the line wont be closed.
BUT.If the people behind me are disorganised I go straight through and hold them up.

I have my routine down pat before I get to security, but it doesn't help me!
I can "jump" the queue but with 2 hip replacements, I come to an abrupt stop after going through the metal detector.
If they have the body scanners, I try to go for them, but often I'm put back in the line for metal detector.
Just one of the costs of no longer having sore joints I guess.

I am prepared before I go thru the scanner. So many have not prepared. Just walk past them.

abit late to the thread but i'm all in favour of jumping the queue

Sometimes I am that stupified zombie that has not mastered the 'prepare for security routine' to Olympic standard. And if the Xray machine is unfed I am very happy to be jumped BUT dont repack your bag out the xray exit (I wont continue the 'fed' analogy). Pick it up and go or drag it directly as far as possible towards the end of the exit rack please.

On one occasion I had a man in front of me struggling with shoes (it was the SYD seamless txf from Int to the bus to Dom) and he barked at me not to go in front of him when I was 3m away. His travel companion, he and myself were the only people before security. I gladly held back thinking what was unfolding may be the most eventful part of the trip and I didnt want to miss it. I kept enough distance so if the veins standing out on his neck actualy exploded I wouldn't get covered. Perhaps sadly there was no furher drama and it was the usual level of travel tedium.

Regarding the comments around what is expected of WP pax. Status is unconnected to class and style. Which is luck for me.

Exactly. Push your stuff right to the end of the rollers before trying to extract any of it.

And don’t just leave the tray there!

Actually it will be a lesson in humility when the day comes that I can’t just wander straight to the front of those queues.

I do it all time, just make sure everything is stuffed in my carry on and very easy to overtake someone who needs a tray.

And again today at MEL INT. I was first through the JQ check in so it wasn't my fellow passengers.

Also at stake today was FLounge time so it was important not to waste time.

Have had my facial and the meal is coming.

I tend to start removing things as I am waiting, if there is a line. EG watch off, belt off (if required). If I am in transit, while waiting for the bridge and doors to open, I often take advantage of that dead time to get ready - such as putting wallet/phone/watch in to a pocket of my bag, and making sure laptop/tablet is all unstrapped and ready to come out quickly. I will jump the queue if I have the tray in my hand and ready to go, but others are still faffing about.

I can only ever remember beeping once, and that was a few days ago at AUH. I left my Oyster card in my pocket...the agent insisted on scanning my glasses! Stumbling through and squinting very hard for my glasses was not ideal...

I can tell you from personal experience jb, it will take a fair bit of patience. Especially international travel.

I speak from experience as one of those who inevitably takes longer at the tray-stage. I have a Pacemaker and have to remove everything from all pockets + belt + shoes (at almost all airports); I can save a bit of time by putting watch, wallet, phone and coins into a pocket on my carry-on bag in advance ... BUT, I ALWAYS wave the pax behind me through. So, my opinion is: definitely move ahead of any one who is not yet ready to proceed.
BTW, some airport security lines require everything (even the carry-on bag itself) to be placed in a tray, thus adding to the congestion; others (like CBR) have no connection between the 'tray-stage' and the conveyor that goes through the machine. That's not helpful.

You’d think it was rocket science sometimes!

I have all items to be removed in my shoulder bag (vs cabin bag) - so liquids, electronics (where required) etc. I hit the rollers with everything in hand to dump in tray and will jump ahead if people are fussing.

Pass through, grab tray and slide to end, shove things into bag as will repack in Lounge anyway. Tray in pile and exit promptly.

If I am carrying 2 iPads in my carry on I have to take both out at the Perth Airport X-ray. Often Mrscove gets me to carry hers.
