Jump queue at X-ray? [others not ready, you are]

I passed two slow pax in MEL removing items at start of belt last Friday, security attendant standing at X-ray agreed with my passing slower pax and in one motion offerred tray for keys and mobile then slid into X-ray and I was through quick as, fantastic service and I thanked him accordingly.

Yes. Some people are ready to go quickly, and others aren't. It's not like a queue in the local shops.

As a Plantinum flyer with Qantas it irks me that I get into the security line behind those people who hang their Plantinum Qtag off their carry on and when at the head of the line suddenly remember to take their computer out of their carry on take off their jacket find their phone etc like its the first time they have ever done the process. The same people will go through the same rigmarole when they have boarded the aircraft standing half in the aisle while unpacking what the need from their carry on and holding up everyone else and then usually look around with disbelief that there are people lined up behind them.
I have jumped the line and had some nasty looks however I just keep going because I got in the line prepared for what was going to happen....rant over

By the time I enter the queue at the security, I have everything out of my pockets, belt off and in the bag, so when I get to the tray out comes the computer and into the tray, now seeing I have had ample time to accomplish this not so difficult task, if there is anyone if front of me that decides at the last minute to do this not so difficult task I go ahead of them. I really don't care if they give me "the look" as I will never see them again.

Life is too short to deal with people that cannot think.

Ah, you mean the DYKWIA brigade.....
Yes however I do feel sorry for them as they obviously suffer from short term memory loss....I also worry if they have parked their car at the terminal will they ever find out again!

I generally carry nothing in my bag that I need to take out but the odd time I have the lap top in there, I always step to one side and do the deed in the bench area, whilst keeping the rollers free. I am considering reviewing this consideration as I'm noticing others who grab a tray, push past, get to within a couple of metres of the Xray, then commence to unpack. I go from being at the head of the queue, to being four back, standing watching them going through a far more complicated unpacking routine.
To me, the courteous thing to do is sort yourself out some distance from the Xray and let those who are already sorted, pass through in an efficient manner. If you do not, surely you are being rude, not the person who is ready to go and walks around you?

I do it often.

My day trip bag is a Tom Bihn Cadet with my computer in a neoprene 'cache' as they call it on 'rails' so it slides out and back into the bag.

By slipping my mobile in the front pocket before hitting the queue and having the main section unzipped I can walk past people, slide the laptop cache out, pop it on the belt and be through the scanner before they have even gotten their computer into a tray.

I don't do this all the time but will if people are being slow - especially those who @surfersimon and @onemore mention - in the Priority queue but totally unprepared!

I've got the look before a few times but have never slowed anybody else down when I've 'queue-jumped' like this - and I usually hate queue jumpers.

BTW - I also have belts and shoes which I know don't trigger the scanners at domestic airports. US flights when you all do the shoes off thing I wear my R M Williams boots - easy on and easy off

Do many belts set off the scanner? I know mine doesn't. I have to wear safety footwear for many places I visit so I carefully obtained shoes with composite toecaps. For occasional e.mails, I carry a tablet which happily goes through the scanner in my bag. That brings me down to the phone, which I put in my bag whilst queuing.
Generally all I have to do is walk and feed the bag into the scanner, which is why I'm grateful to this thread as I've been hesitant to push past those who leave their unpacking to the last minute. I'm going to be less charitable in future!

I'm regularly surprised by the number of belts that DO set off the scanner. Not just chunky 'cowboy' buckles but a number of 'dress' belts.

I know that the buckle on my RMW belt does (and it is just a 'simple' one like this) and some shoes still have a metal shank in them as well - although most manufacturers have moved away from them for this reason.

If you are ready to go in the queue and others aren't then GO - you will be doing those behind you a favour :)

Security checking is mandatory so it’s incumbent on all to be as quick and efficient as possible. I’m always prepared to get thru quickly and it amazes me how many people are happy to inconvenience others by bumbling around. I only ever had one person complain about queue jumping and I couldn’t be bothered with an explanation so just said “cough* off”. That did the trick!

I’m normally very respectful of a queue, but if I have everything sorted, and there’s a clear gap towards the scanners, then absolutely I am jumping forward, while people fuss through stuff.

As pointed out above, as a woman, I’ve always got a bag with me so everything can be easily slipped in there and pushed through. If I do have my laptop or an umbrella, I’ll either have it out in the queue, ready to grab a tray and put it on the belt in one motion, or if I have too much to sort, also like above I’ll stand off a little so people without stuff to wrangle can go through.

If I’ve ever been chided for jumping ahead, I’ve been too focused on getting to my plane/the lounge to notice.

With DSC non plats are now plats. Plats in SC only without the requisite airport experience.....

I do it. I have a low tolerance for people who dick around, or come to the airport wearing every metal item they own.

But, I have had someone get grumpy at me for doing it -- a pilot.

It was in the US. I hoped I wasn't on his flight.

I hate queue jumpers. I will always call them out. But surely it’s more important to fill up the gaps when they aren’t going to be imminently filled.

It's not really queue jumping, is it? They aren't in the queue until ready, before that they are just wasting space. It's like someone buying their groceries vs filling their trolley still.
