We’ll do a day trip from Edinburgh somewhere … maybe Stirling castle, and have some day trips planned to Cotswold and Devon planned from Bath… where my Smith heritage is from around South Molton/ Chulmleigh, so that will be a day of narrow lanes.
.....
Thanks so much for those who have contributed thus far but it’s time to get serious:
Preliminary thoughts are up western side to Glasgow - 2 or 3 nts in Glasgow then 2 or 3 nts in Edinburgh then back east coast to LHR to fly out.
No idea if this is sensible or too ambitious - what I need to start with is coming from where I do in much younger years driving narrow tight twisty country roads is second nature so we take that out of equation immediately.
Museums / churches etc bore both of us to death - well the Beatles Museum excluded here.
Castles we can take or leave - a couple visits prolly max
Attempting to experience the smaller quaint country town feeling if it exists
So some questions please if I may:
Again thanks so much for taking the time to contribute - very much appreciated.
- Should we plan 4 or 5 days north and south legs?
- Is 3 nts / 2 days in both Glasgow / Edinburgh sufficient? Too long?
- I assume rental cars in UK are similar to AU in terms age / quality etc? (Def will be hiring SUV)
- Rental car company recos if you have any please
- Any suggestions to avoid newbie traps appreciated
Our trip, starting this week follows this:
Arrive into London Monday. Pickup Sixt hire car on Saturday at Shepherds Bush. We’ve booked a BMW X5 and really hope we get that model, as with 3 adults + infant, we have a lot of luggage and are going to need the boot space.
Drive to York Saturday afternoon and then to Edinburgh on Monday. We are stopping at Corbridge Roman fort near Newcastle on the way north.
Mon-Fri in Edinburgh and then drive 8 hours south to Bath. Probably didn’t think that through well enough for having our son in the car seat for that long straight but have mapped out the service station stops and will make regular breaks. We just have to get there.
We have 5 nights in Bath and then drive into London dropping car off at St Pancras to get the Eurostar to Paris.
I drive pretty stately and use cruise control so am hoping to avoid speeding fines. With the dollar so low, I can’t be affording the fines. I hear everyone is pretty polite with driving and merging compared to Australia. I also read you stay the left lane and aren’t supposed to undertake from the left, whereas most aussies stick the middle lane if 3 or more lanes on the freeway.

That's the site of the old Royal Infirmary. Some building remain, converted, and some new. You should enjoy a walk in the Meadows.Staying in Quartermile near Edi uni which looks a modern building, and an area just outside of York wall in an apartment that reminds me of the development around Mascot & Waterloo in Sydney.
Made sure all accom has parking included. Selected that filter on booking.com and then went scouting on Google to see what the streets and building and parking spaces looked like.
Not quite game to do a trip report just yet, but may post any posts here if it’s helpful CE.
Now for our second leg of SQ Suites on Monday… !
