Long wait for refund for cancelled reward flights Qantas - a common experience?

Hi All,

Just reviewing out travel plans to Europe booked for May , I have booked my Europe tickets using Qantas points all booked under classic reward flights . There are 3 different booking reference nos. as i booked them as the classic award tickets became available as below
Leg 1 Mel-Sin- Mel
Leg 2 Singapore-Doha- Vienna
Leg 3 Paris-Dubai-Singapore
I understand cancellation charges are 6000 points per passenger , does this mean i will be charged 6000X3 points per passenger or juts 6000 points per passenger for all 3 cancellations.
Can we pay cash instead of points for the cancellations? does anyone know how much do 6000 points translate to in terms of AUD

Just wondering, when QF cancels an award booking/flight, are the points returned in a reasonable time frame or should I expect to have to chase it up? Just glad I’ve got enough points to book replacements.

If you read the posts in this thread a common experiences is that you won't be happy with the way Qantas acts, will be frustrated by the amount of time you waste following this up and may need to involve government consumer advocacy agencies to resolve the issue.
 
QF cancelled January 2022 flight last Wednesday. Points back in account this morning. Email said up to 8 weeks for taxes, fees refund to hit the credit card.
 
Anyone have any advice on how difficult it will be to get a refund on a closed credit card?

I need to close my credit card in the next week before the annual fee gets charged but I am still waiting for Qantas to refund a cancelled revenue ticket. It's been 9 weeks since requesting the refund so I thought I'd get it by now. Qantas just tells me that its coming.

I had a recent one with ANZ. Even though I'd closed the card account, the QF refund was paid into it and I received a statement showing a credit balance (maybe 3 months after closing.) I called the bank and gave them my bank details and they transferred the funds. I don't know if that would be the case with other banks but it was pretty pain-free with ANZ.

I was required to provide a statement from the bank stating the account had been closed.

It took another 13 months to receive the $3500 reimbursement.

My multiple experiences (detailed on AFF) are that it will be unnecessarily difficult, but there's nothing you can do about it. I proactively contacted Qantas on multiple occasions. They aren't interested in assisting you with this issue. Only on 1 occasion did I manage to force them to refund directly to my bank account rather than to the credit card which payment was made from (this was despite multiple AFF members telling me that this wasn't possible). Each credit card provider has a different process for this. But in short, it's now going to take even longer to get your refund.

I had this experience with a CBA card and rang my bank re the pending refund . They advised it would automatically go into another CC (which it did).
If not, you can nominate an account.
It was pretty easy really

I cancelled a flight today. Phoned and after the usual prompt choices was advised wait time was about 15 mins. Elected to have a callback.

Callback came after 14 mins. :)

Got Jamie. Accent indicated it must have been an Australian centre. He cancelled the flight and advised points should be back within about a week; cash component later.

That prompted me to query why I had not received a refund of my points for flights I had cancelled three weeks ago.

He said that's too long, put me on hold while he chased it up with the refunds team.

A minute or two later he's back on the line informing me that the points had been refunded immediately. Sure, enough, log into my account after getting off the line and a lazy 186K points had returned.

Certainly can't complain about Jamie's service. :)

Now to see how long it takes to get the $$ back and whether I'll have to chase that.

Hmmm...I better call. Cancelled reward flights about 3 weeks ago and still no points.
 
Has anyone tried to see if they can get classic reward taxes refunded as a travel credit? I have a flight I need to cancel but it used up Amex statement credits and I don’t want it to trigger those to be taken back.

Rather than cancel, can you rebook for an alternate date? Could even be entirely different routing.
