There are a few threads where members have posted questions about the best luggage available. Is it a good idea to actually compile a list of what we think is good? I am a fan of Titan, I know others are Tumi fans, what do you all think?

I'll kick off

Titan X2 - the best you can buy ;)

The best suitcase for me was the one I used in November to bring home the bubble-wrapped 750ml bottles of Seagrams Gin, Smirnoff Vodka and Glenfiddich Scotch that I bought at Safeway in California for a total of $AUD50. Thanks QF for looking after my precious cargo.

Oops sorry, I think I mis-understood the thread topic :p

I have a couple of favourites.

For most business travel, my antler roller bag is my best friend. Dot suggested this to me a couple of years back and it's been the best investment to date.

This is the current model which is closest to mine:

For longer trips where I can't use hand luggage only I have these two Black Wolf bags:

and this one (it's the newer model)

I guess at the end of the day I'm a Black Wolf and Antler fan!

I used to use Samsonite for my roll-aboard and checkin, but now have an Antler. It’s a soft case with an expandable top, so couldn’t be used as carry-on as it’s just a little too big. I use an STM backpack for carry-on.

I've got a large and medium size Samsonite Aero in Bright Red. They stand out like dogs whatsits, and one fits inside the other when I travel out of Oz to buy "stuff".
Welcome to Samsonite Australia.com
Purchased from bagworld in WA.
They roll along effortlessly, and so far Qantas, Virgin and Jetstar have been unable to break them. They were not cheap, but I think they are great value for money
For carry on, I use a Lowepro Computraker AW Camera/Laptop Backpack which keeps both hands free when I need to tow 2 bags, and its AMAZING just how much you can fit into it. We wont talk about the weight it will carry!

I think it
depends where when and how you are traveling.

Going to South Africa first class will be different to USA in Y, tropics hard case?? Wet weather...same

Tumi as a carry on, never broken and ever reliable.

Love what the High Sierra Duffle can hold for those increasingly important runs to USA for shopping and gifts.

Carrying spirits / wine hard case.

Bag going to be in rain while loading for an hour, take a hard case

All depends upon circumstances I think

I travel less often than most here, so maybe my wear-and-tear factor is less of an influence on choice, but my luggage (2 bags, both used since ~2004) cost me $49 all up. :)

A carry-on 20' 'rollaboard' which was a present, and certainly not any 'name' brand, which has also travelled with me to Bendigo each week for ~4 years and is showing few signs of wear.

And the $49 (marked down from $149 ) is a medium-sized-at-best (but sufficient for my needs) Tosca wheeled soft-sided 'checkin' suitcase which accompanied me RTW last year. No real wear and tear there either.

So that luggage is good for me. ;)

Ok - in ascending order of duration :)

Day trip to Mel - I take my Trent Nathan simple satchel with just the iPad. This is so much better than a laptop bag - no need to remove at security and neatly tucks under the seat in front without taking up foot space.

Overnight trip - Now the game gets started with the Tumi Alpha 20in. I have had this for almost four years now and it is really great. Travels at high speed through airports, is fairly light and more importantly very simple.

Three nights to three weeks on business If the stars align and I can minimise the need for a jacket (and I am travelling alone - meaning no socialising in the evenings) then I fire up the trifold suit bag as well as the rollaboard. It can take 4-5 shirts plus a couple of pairs of trousers. The side pocket can then take shoes (stuffed with socks) and it sits neatlyon top of the rollaboard. The two together fit on top of each other in the overheads and then dont take up too much space in the overhead.

Feeling more adventurous - we did a lot of shopping in the USA, the A$ was strong so I bought the Tumi duffle bag. Just a simple strong bag. I use this now when I need more than just the carryon (like when I kid myself that I might do some exercise or I am travelling with colleagues so need more evening clothes)

Finally if travelling with mrssimongr and toddlergr then we have to bring along the wheeled Samsonite (yep not a Tumi ). Very large but easy to maneuver - I prefer not to use this but when needs must...

What I would like though is this:

Stanhope Trunk - Tumi

No idea how or when I would use it but I love the idea of travelling with a trunk :)

Not a big fan of spending too much on luggage as the airlines can damage the expensive luggage just as easily as the cheap luggage.

Currently have an American Tourister (cheap Samsonite brand) which is the 3rd replacement for a $40 bag damaged by QF a couple of years ago. This bag is only ~12 months old but with regular commuting the wear and tear has become noticeable.

My favourite was a $25 no name brand bag that lasted 6 years and over 20 overseas trips. Was very reliable and sturdy 26" bag. Have looked everywhere to try and find one similar but have not succeeded.

The cheap luggage these days does not appear to last very long but then luck also plays a part.

I have a pretty worn out, bright yellow suitcase. It's perfect as I've NEVER seen another one like it anywhere in the world. The ease of identification makes it a gem with which to travel.

I use a Tumi "Alpha Gym Bag" as a weekender - carry on luggage type bag.

I also use a greyish Briggs & Riley bag as my main bag when needed.

Very pleased with both bags - only minor complaint is that the wheels on the Briggs aren't multi-directional so I can't spin it on the spot like my previous bag.

OK, it’s got no wheels and the handle needs a little help from some cable ties, but my venerable grey Globetrotter has been serving me well since 1978.
And I’ve no intention of retiring it any time soon.
