Luggage

I've most recently sworn off checking luggage for trips less than a month; my rollaboard is one of these (on the left):

Unfortunately it's no longer available. Downsides are that it doesn't fit wheels-first in to older style B737 overhead bins -- and the design means there's some wasted space .. upsides are that it's incredibly well made and easy to lug around.

My cabin bag/tote thingy is one of these:

Fits everything I need for an overnight trip, plus it looks awesome :)

I've got the issue that my luggage needs to fit a hard hat and safety boots. This means that for a week trip I need a pretty big checked bag. Currently, it seems my suitcase is about 64cm tall (based on measuring with a blank piece of A4 paper, I lack a tape here!).

My current luggage is beginning to fray around the edges after flying almost every week since January, however last week the handle mechanism used to release the handle up/down lock broke, so I can't use the handle any more and have to carry a 15-16kg luggage.

So I guess I'm after something with a solid handle construction. Unfortunately due to the above, all carry-on is ruled out. 64cm seems to work well for me in that I can fit everything I need in it comfortably without needing a brake press to get it small enough first.

It sounds like the Antlers are a good pick. I'm unsure if I want a hard exterior so I don't know how I feel about Samsonite ones. Furthermore, what I don't understand is why 4 wheels is some sort of game-changer vs having two. I never really just hold my suitcase upright and try to push it around - instead it's almost always behind me or I just lift it up to move it a single step. Am I missing something?

Open to all advice. Thanks in advance! :)

I'd recommend them. Or Victorinox (a bit more pricey, but very high quality). There's a mob in Crows Nest Sydney that do Victorinox suitcases for about 1/2 RRP. Great guys to deal with.

4-wheelers are good for older people as there's even less effort involved than pulling a 2-wheeler. ;) <dons flame suit>

I'm not a fan of them, but I can see why some people might like them.

Cheers,
- Febs.

OI I love my 4 wheelers :!: :D

Well as older people we got a 4 wheeler. On an even surface it is great. If the ground is uneven, into lifts,on carpets it is pathetic.

Thanks Febs, shall keep my eye out! The only concern I guess I have with dropping some decent cash on luggage is that my dirty work equipment (coal-stained boots, hard hat, sweaty smelly high-vis, etc.) will taint the saintly clean interior of it and ruin the whole thing. How durable are those linings? Maybe a disgusting grunt engineer like myself doesn't deserve such sophistication!

Well, at the sprightly old age of 25 I think I can risk a few more years of these wild 2-wheeled beasts before I settle down! The bigger wheels should hopefully take a bit more punishment that I'll no doubt throw their way, which'll be advantageous.

PS: How's OCAU treating you these days? ;)

Hey  I just brought a four wheeled Rimova which I thought made me look young and stylish. I guess instead of packing it for Europe - I should be packing it for Green Grove Retirement Community.

In that case I still pull it as a 2 wheeler. So are you saying that 2 wheelers are cough :rolleyes::rolleyes:;)

Just before our last 7 week trip RTW, I bought an Antler Translite Trolley Bag ( weight 1.9kg) from the Luggage Professionals at Crows Nest as my new rollon cabin bag. By the time we got to Bangkok ( our second stop) one of the fabric handles had partially pulled out of the case and was fraying badly ! It has a 7 year guarantee - so we took it back to the shop on our return to Sydney - now awaiting Antlers decision on what they think.

Have always been interested in Rimova. What is their advantage? I hear they are quite pricey?Got some Tumi in the states recently, always good quality.

Very love Victorinox...vg quality.4 wheels are good if you need to cover alot of even ground. Forget what people say about being an older persons cup of tea......let's be practical!

If I can get away with it on a day trip I just take my laptop bag. Due to work reason's a lot of the time even for a day trip I have to take luggage as I have stock with me to be delivered to customers. The bag I am currently using cost me $4 Aussie in hong kong and it has done app 20 trips and it is nearly stuffed the more expensive bag I was using did not last much longer and it is also nearly stuffed as well...

They are also great for small children to manoeuvre around airports, in particular my small children ;)

Unfortunately it's no longer available.

They have just brought out their new range :D

But i have the same as that one but without the camera backpack insert. Plus i use their larger one for my normal suitcase (The Mock Tudor).

Crumpler luggage is fantastic!

More carry-on/day-to-day laptop use:
I bought the Crumpler Boston Heist on Friday, and am wondering whether to keep it, or get a slightly smaller one. I've got a 15" laptop with extra life sticky-out battery; may be getting a 17" in a few months.
For day-to-day use, I need to carry my laptop, battery pack, two hard hand splints, and a few bits and pieces.
For carry on, all of the above, plus an iPad, LAG pack. I'd want the iPad, laptop, and LAG pack in the laptop bag, for easy pulling out at security. I have a carry on wheelie bag as well.

Does anyone have any of the Heist bags for carry on and day-to-day purposes? How are they?

The boston heist looks like a pretty big bag, but if your carrying it as a one and only carry on then it should be fine.

I travel with 2 bags as carry ons when I have my camera bag with me because the camera bag doesnt hold all the little bits and pieces i need it to. In saying that, i could just cut back on the stuff i carry on.

but why?

Currently using for my big trips

Camera Bag: Brazillion Dollar Home
Back Pack: Private Zoo
