I finally decided on a Samsonite Cosmolite in the mid-size, the Antler Liquis had some quality concerns for me. Will be easy to manouver with the kids in tow, but now I'm wondering how many people will be thinking I'm an old man considering some of the comments in this thread! ;)

Have always been interested in Rimova. What is their advantage? I hear they are quite pricey?Got some Tumi in the states recently, always good quality.

Only speaking of the aluminum range - I like the German design and construction. Also relatively lightweight, easy to manoeuvre and extremely tough, although they do dent easily. I find the construction/quality to be higher than Tumi.

Very pricey unless you buy direct/mail order from Germany in which case they are comparable in price to US normal retail prices for Tumi (excluding outlet malls etc).

A luggage store at HEL was the cheapest we have seen-large size Salsa Air at E260.

I'm not a big fan of the Salsa line - but that's a good price. I'm thinking of going to HEL in October so looking forward to checking out the pricing on the rest of the range.

Just before our last 7 week trip RTW, I bought an Antler Translite Trolley Bag ( weight 1.9kg) from the Luggage Professionals at Crows Nest as my new rollon cabin bag. By the time we got to Bangkok ( our second stop) one of the fabric handles had partially pulled out of the case and was fraying badly ! It has a 7 year guarantee - so we took it back to the shop on our return to Sydney - now awaiting Antlers decision on what they think.

Just thought I would come back and say I now have my bag back from the Luggage Professionals. I did have to phone them a couple of times to check on the progress ( " I'll check with Antler and get back to you ") but last week they phoned and said it was ready and posted it back to me in QLD. No charge. Now in October we will see if the repair can take a RTW trip.

MAY12 058.jpgOn our recent trip to Singapore we bought the Antler Liquis set - cheaper by $50 than the discount online place in Australia, plus we got the GST back on departure from Singapore. Plus I love the colour. And it is as light as a feather !!

What a lovely matching ensemble,,! Nice! It's kind of looks like a 'Sale of the Century" prize sans Tony Barber & the 'pretty one".. :D

And the good thing is that they fit one inside the other, so on a big shopping trip you can start out with one bag but come home with 3

Do you have have favourite place for buying luggage in SIN or do you just look for a sale??

Do you have have favourite place for buying luggage in SIN or do you just look for a sale??

When we were in Singapore the "Great Singapore Sale" was on The Great Singapore Sale 2012

So in the Ngee Ann Shopping Centre is the big Takashimaya store, and for the first week of the GSS they had a huge luggage fair in the basement with hundreds of cases and brands to choose from. Each week it is a different thing on sale, in the past we have seen toys and handbags, Takashimaya : Home I also bought a WMF set of saucepans that were $900 for $ 139 !!!! at Takashimaya. I think it is a great place to shop :D

Thanks for that.

I have just put Takashimaya into my favourites for our next trip

Takashimaya luggage isn't that cheap unless there is a sale in SIN. I find "The Planet Traveller" will have the same prices but usually offer 5% off or other bonuses for AMEX.

The prices are often amazing during the GSS luggage event at Takashimaya, so I am dismayed to find that it has already been held (I will be in Sin this coming W/E).

Shopping around is important as when a specific brand has a sale most shops will have the same sale on, but some offer additionaly discounts for certain cards or have bonuses etc.

This thread has popped up at an appropriate time for me, as I scratch my head and try to find a roll aboard for carry-on use on Qantas and QantasLink (on Dash-8’s a lot). My STM backpack is lovely for a jacket and electronics, but starts to struggle when packed for an overnight trip :(

I don’t want something boring and black and do tend to find myself in the snow, or the outback, so need something rugged, with wheels that will deal with uneven surfaces.

The biggest issue is working out what’s an appropriate size and weight, because with my constant Dash-8 flying I think 105cm total dimensions is the biggest I should be looking at, but with the weight limit being 7kg I might be going over that too easily anyway. Plus I can’t find details on Premium Hand Luggage anywhere, are there rules? Seeing as it’s just going into the same hold, can I bring a bag that’s heavier than 7kg?

So I’ve narrowed myself to two bags. I actually was just looking at the Burton Wheelie Flight Deck, as it’s built for snow and everything else, but despite the line "Meets Most Airline Carry-On Size Restrictions"… at 122cm total dimensions it’s a little big! It suits me though, is a good build quality and looks good on the inside )though really need to have a look in person and work out just how big it is).

On the other hand, in the Virgin OOL lounge yesterday I flicked through the Voyeur magazine and found the Crumpler Spring Peeper (M) w Wheels. At 110cm total dimensions it looks to fit in the cabin much easier without argument (without having seen one and compared). But the pockets on the inside seem too simple to me. I find myself liking the complexity of the Burton’s insides.

So I throw it over to AFF, what do you think? Have I overlooked an obvious Tumi or Samsonite or Antler because I just want to be different?

Also does anyone know the rules about QantasLink Premium Hand Luggage, with regards to weight and size etc… I’m not looking to turn up to the foot of the plane with a cello, but don’t think a bag should be checked in just because it’s a kilo over the 7, or (and this would go for any roll-aboard in a Dash-8) too big for the lockers?

Mods: feel free to split to it’s own thread if required, wasn’t sure if it was best posted here or not. :)

I do the Dash 8 frequently across Bass Strait.Waiting in the MEL QP for the next one.
They do not weigh the Premium Hand carry.I often have one that is accepted on JQ and admit to this sometimes being 11-12kg.Never been queried on the Premium Hand carry.
Always have the PHC tag put on at the gate-if you just leave it at the plane they treat it as checked baggage.

Don't go Burton, Sam, Crumpler is leagues ahead in build quality I believe, and n reputation and warranty provisions.

If those are the only two choices (and I have no better suggestions apart from considering the arcteryx a mate mentioned) then go Crumpler.

The Burton range looks attractive but practicality speaking, sure have to have a close inspection.. I was in the Crumpler store in BNE recently, & certainly they have a wonderful range to suit every travelling requirement.. Sam, I'm interested to know the positive & negative value ranges of both the Burton & Crumpler bags..
Look forward to more posts from alternatives as well. :D

I had a bad experience in BNE recently where they insisted on weighing the bag before giving me the tag. I was at exactly 7.0kg so it was allowed I suppose, but as I’d approached them specifically for PHC I wasn’t ever wanting to bring it into the cabin, and I wonder what they’d have said to me had it been 8 or 9 kg!

The lack of information on the QF website is what unsettles me, I’d love to have more specific knowledge of what is and isn’t acceptable, but can’t find it. Might have to talk to ozbeachbabe!

I’d heard that Burton had a lifetime warranty, where they’d replace bags that failed not due to user wear and tear, but of course I have no first hand knowledge. Crumpler does look very good, and they lay out what their warrant is very clearly. I looked at Arc’teryx but they don’t appear to have any bags with wheels. I already have a backpack and wouldn’t be keen to have a second (one over each shoulder :p).

But thanks for the advice there!

I didn’t realise there was a brick and mortar store, so will definitely have to go check that out. I’m due in Southport tomorrow and will check the Snow Biz store to see if they have any Burton bags in stock and get a good look at them, hopefully the model I’m after too, then do the same in Brisbane if I can.

Can’t believe choosing a bag could be so hard, makes me just want to call mum and tell her to buy me a cabin bag and take what I get :p
