Luggage

I recently went shopping for new luggage in San Francisco and found what suited me best in the Crumpler store (not realising it was an Aussie brand). I bought the Dry Red No. 11 for check-in and the Dry Red No. 10 for carry-on (in red, of course - just my colour!). They are so light and much easier to maneuver than my 2-wheelers. I'm so happy with them that I've bought the Dry Red No. 4 since, to complete my set - and they fit one inside the other for easy storage.

Cat :)

Does No 10 pass as carry on? It's 70cm tall...

I have a No 3 and was looking to get another one. They appear to have shrunk in size?

Came across this brand:

HIDEO WAKAMATSU

Any opinions about quality?

Considering the name Hideo.. could be translated as: 'excellent or wonderful man".. I assume the quality would hopefully equate the said name. :D

Dragging up an old thread, Crumpler has come out with a new range and they look pretty nice... figured it'd be worth mentioning.

I'm not a briefcase sort of person, but the Attaché actually looks really nice to me... if I ever got into business suits, quite stylish, and functional. I still love my Spring Peeper, but maybe one of the trunks would be useful for longer trips. I like the TSA lock is built in, and stylishly.

I always like the look of Crumpler luggage, but at 3.3KG the cabin luggage is just too heavy.

I was thinking that too, it's a heavy case to take into a cabin, doesn't leave much for you to pack.

But the Trunk isn't too bad, well, after I take allowances into account.

It's a shame because I really like the look of 55cm carry on.

I'm still going to check it out in store, despite it being well outside my price range. Perhaps if it looks light and flashy you wont be asked to weigh it ;)

They posted a video on instagram, riding one in a car park, so it's certainly sturdy, despite looking flimsy.

I checked them out a couple of days ago - really nice set! The materials are really great - relatively light, and with little flex. Same goes for the internal compression sleeves.

However, agree with the sentiments above - the carry-on is simply too heavy (for QF). It might work best where you have no fixed carry on limit or possibly up to 10kg.

The attache on the other hand is absolutely fantastic - sufficient room for laptop and documents inside, with separate space for an overnight's worth of clothes - and an iPad / travel doc holder on the outside for quick access. At 2.5kg, you could combine it with a Dry Red No 3/10 / Spring Peeper S/M and have a hand luggage-only set up. The only bit of it I wasn't completely happy with would be the kind of ungainly size / shape and the fact that carrying it any way other than as an attache (using the shoulder strap, or even placing it through the handles of a roller bag) is not particularly comfortable. Still can't beat the Dry Red No 7/8 for that.

In any case, really nice bags - the trunks might very well go on the Christmas wish list (though given the price they may be pushing luck!) and the attache is definitely going to be tempting me every time I walk past the store. :)

I love the Crumpler stuff. It is quite heavy, but the big cases are a lot lighter than the old models. I once had a duffle bag damaged by some Finnish baggage handlers and Crumpler simply replaced it! So the guarantee is worth the extra cash. Also when on the carrousel they are quite unique so are very easy to spot. I wouldn't travel without my Crumplers

I saw an ad recently for Briggs & Riley bags with lifetime warranty.

(Antler will be at the bottom of my list of bags I could buy next.)

Can someone recommend a quality luggage supplier in Perth please, cheers

Hi Break Negg -
I use Bagworld - where Australia buys its bags
Not based in WA, but does free shipping AUST wide.
I have purchased 4 cases from them over 4 years and couldn't be happier.

Edit - just received an email from them - 8% off already reduced prices.

Have to say that I wouldn't use WA based leather and luggage (north perth, not sure if the other one is related), based on their front counter person when dropping something off for repair.

Completely unfriendly, back of shop and person stank of cigarettes, told me I had no idea what the warranty covered and generally not very helpful.

When I pointed out my warranty details, they seemed to ignore this and called about a week later to tell me my bags weren't covered for carrier damage. Shot off an (after hours) email to Victorinox which was replied to in minutes, approving my warranty claim.

Someone else at the shop took over (back from holidays I think) who was much more helpful and friendly, but I still haven't heard back about my cases- 3wks now and the whole thing left a sour taste.

Will probably just repair anything in Singapore's authorized centres now, I'm there enough to drop it off then pick it up next trip.

I work at a luggage shop in Sydney, we direct customers to Hunt Leather when someone calls from Perth, they do repairs as well. Here are their details:

note for transparency:The company I work for is not connected to Hunt Leather in any way.

Thanks for that. Unfortunately as a warranty claim I was tied to whomever Victorinox chose/uses. I will feedback to Victorinox if I ever get my cases back. It's been a couple of months now I think.
