On the way to or way from the Gulfstream G5?

LOL

As a result of AFF I now only do carry on for up to trips of 4 weeks, and have used the High Sierra hereunder for that purpose on my last three trips to the USA. It has a good size pull out handle, ample room inside for clothes and a removable day pack, and pulls easy through terminals.

My Samsonite was quite badly damaged after 4 years 60+ trips and must say I am quite tempted by the Titan one. Might cross the bridge and head up to Crows Nest over the weekend.

I have used this Samsonite Carry on for 5 years now on over 100 flights and it is just perfect. With the 4 double wheels it is very stable and easy to navigate around the airport.

Good thread!

With the start of the new year, I'm going to try to go carry-on only for my trips to Brisbane for work (4 nights away). I've been using an Antler wheeler that's too big for carry on, but I reckon I could get away with a smaller bag, and would like to avoid the wait at the carousel and also the angst about whether the bag is going to turn up (I take 2 connecting flights to Brisbane, so it's always a possibility).

The only thing is, I'd like to still have easy access to my phone, ipod, perhaps some paperwork, etc. I don't normally travel with a laptop, but an ipad may be in my future .... I have been taking a Crumpler Horseman messenger bag on board with me to carry odds and ends, but it's really too big now (it's a hangover from when I used to travel with a laptop).

So, keeping in mind the QF allowance of 1 x 115cm bag or 2 x 105cm bags, I've been looking around. Most of the "carry on" bags I see are exactly on the size limit (115cm), leaving no room for an extra smaller bag in the allowance. The Titan X2 50cm is smaller though (106cm - I guess I could argue it's 105cm), so perhaps that's an option. It would probably be big enough - I normally take 2 pairs trousers, 4 shirts, toiletries, jocks, socks, etc. Perhaps a textbook or two. I could go for that, plus a smaller messenger/etc bag.

Otherwise, does anyone have any recommendations for a 115cm bag that could have easy (and preferably slightly padded/protected) external access to a few items as mentioned?

Cheers!
Mat.

I think you could push the small messenger bag from Trent Nathan that I got to carry the iPad as a "personal item" - akin to a hand bag (though I maintain mine is a satchel).

You also then have that Indiana Jones look... without the hat and whip...

Day trip: My everyday soft leather briefcase (flap type, single handle).

4-5 nighter: Leather duffle bag as carry-on + briefcase. Duffle bag fits within domestic size restrictions and can easily carry all clothes for 5 days + gym gear. :) Looks like this.

Overseas: As above, plus large beat-up Samsonite suitcase which looks terrible, but keeps working (and has already had the cost covered under insurance after its first trip, where it got the beating which causes it to look the way it does today).

I've got my first 5 day overseas trip coming up next week, so I'm planning on getting a Victorinox WT-20 (WT-20 - Wheeled - Victorinox AG) to use as carry-on. Looks like it'll hold about the same as my leather duffle bag, but I like the suiter, and getting around multiple airports is going to be easier with wheels. :)

For long o/s trips (and holidays) I usually back a thin sports duffle bag in my suitcase, and usually end up checking it in (full) on the way home. Particularly if I've been to the US and the $ is good! :D

Cheers,
- Febs.

I should also add the Spacepak bags. I bought the set last week and I think they will come in handy over the coming months.

Not using them this weekend, but will on my next trip.

I also added this suit bag to my collection too:

Made carrying a suit around nice and easy!

Just bought a Samsonite Skywheeler 69cm

Has survived it's first trip. I don't have a lot of luck when it comes to luggage. Usually replace my spinners after 1-2 yrs due to wear and tear.
Cabin baggage is my Keepall 55

Interested to hear how the cosmolites travel as I love the design of these cases

Antler aeon air

Right combo of sizes
Light (although not ultra light weight)
Which means it's strong
Which means its been sturdy through a large number of trips, often overloaded
And it's well priced (when on sale, not rrp)

Between us mrs doc and I have
- 2 carry on rollaboards (Mac qf carry on size)
- 2 large suitcase
- 1 medium suitcase
- 2 garment bags - suitable for carry on or check in

Now I just need a tote bag and a soft side large bag and I doubt I'll buy luggage again (famous last words)

Hi Princess Fiona, we purchased (at Woodbury Commons) two 85cm cosmolites and subsequently packed them to the hilt with clothes and shoes (according to Mrs_E, we were apparently "saving money" by doing so  ;)). Packing wise, inside the case there is one section that has a full 'cover' and the other half has the usual 'seat belt' clip (hope that makes sense). Made it easy to pack (and shove stuff in) to be honest.

Anyways, chocked full and weighing a bit (more due to the contents, as an empty case is v.light) these were FANTASTIC to wheel around airports/streets/etc. Very moveable. The only issue is that we would struggle to get both cases into the boot of our car, so in the end we gave one of them away to our parents. On relfection, I think we would have been better off with the 74cm's instead. Also, the case does have some light cosmetic scratches due the 'love' shown by handlers at the various airports we visited.

I hope this helps...

Back on topic, for work I'm a fan of carry-on only. For my (3 to 4 day) trips, I use an Antler Z500 cabin rollaboard and a laptop case. The Antler is fantastic as it is light yet large enough to allow me to carry on the suits (one additional, as I'm usually wearing the other), shirts, gym and casual gear needed for the trip. My only minor gripe is the single telescopic handle (rather than the double which would allow me to rest my laptop case on the bag whilst dragging it).

Where's a good place to buy Tumi and what is considered a good deal on this luggage (eg 40% off?)

I also remember reading on FT that alot of people like Travelpro.

Cheers

Can someone tell me what's sooooooooooo good about Tumi's?

I just see them as boring black bags (except those limited edition racing styles.)

Thanks wile_e :) having trouble multiquoting with iPad v useful info. In LOTFAP now but haven't been able to find any big discounts on them yet.
Jobu, MCO has several Tumi outlets, v.reasonable prices AFAIK
I'll probably follow JohnK and settle for a $20 cheapie no-name to bring back all the shopping ;p

If you travel to the US I would recommend Steinmart (www.steinmart.com.au) for cheap Tumi.

Stock availability is a bit hit and miss and sometimes they only have discontinued lines but I have bought current lines at 40-60% off.

Having said that I am over Tumi.

I have to say the racing styles look really cheap to me. A friend of mine has the Ducati carry on and when I first saw it I thought he had bought a cheap throw-away bag...

The handles on the Tumi carry-ons look really solid and sturdy to me which was what caught my eye in the first instance.

Looking at updating my luggage and have been looking closely at the Samsonite Cosmolites and the Antler Liquis. Difference in price is a few hundred dollars on the big sizes (though both have been on sale recently) and both have 10 yr warranty. Antler is a little lighter.

Does anyone have any knowledge a bit more detailed than I do? Especially those that bought one over the other? I am looking at the mid-size 74cm ones (I need 2).

TIA

I had the same dilemma recently - eventually settled for the Antler Liquis as the large Cosmolite was huuuuge and may have issues on o'seas domestic flights. Also there was a couple of hundred $ difference between brands for similar sizes. Peters of Kensington (not Kens next door) has both on sale at present which is cheaper again than 40% off sale at Myer.

I have an Antler Tronic Z500 cabin-sized roller that is designed to hold a laptop. It comes with a laptop sleeve, and the front section can be accessed from inside the main section as well. The main inside section has a zipped cover, so the guts don't spill out when you open it.

Looks like this - Luggage Direct

For checked baggage, I was using a ghastly looking maroon floral print suitcase until the zipper broke - the padlock got caught on something and ripped the zipper from the side of the suitcase, making it unrepairable. It was great because it was distinctive. Had to replace that in a hurry and ended up with a generic Samsonite hard case. They ripped me a new one when I bought it in Pacific Place in HK.
