Made any travel mistakes lately?

I went against my better judgement and didn't push the point when a colleague suggested we book on Jetstar to get a team of 4 (including myself) back from BNE to CBR this afternoon.

Went about as well as can be expected from Jetstar:

• Discover that Jetstar bag drop is on the opposite end of the BNE domestic terminal from the Qantas lounge, requiring long trudge to get ourselves to the lounge once through security.

• Earn wrath of lounge dragon because team member's new Qantas Club membership card hadn't arrived, his Qantas app wasn't logged in, and as the JQ boarding pass isn't scanned at the lounge they couldn't determine his eligibility to enter the hallowed lounge precinct.

• Receive passive-aggressive text from JQ advising that boarding has commenced, requiring us to leave the Qantas lounge we'd just arrived in to scarper to the gate which is also at the opposite end of the terminal.

• Discover boarding hadn't actually commenced which was, in retrospect, not at all surprising.

• Get in argument with carry-on luggage minion because one team member's overnight bag was 8kg not 7.

• Make subsequent weight savings by reducing bank account balance by $65 for the privilege of carrying said bag onto the aircraft.

• Walk a half-marathon in sweltering Brisbane heat to get to the aircraft which had parked "at the gate" in the same way that people with Dodge Ram trucks park "in the lines" at Bunnings.

• Witness the interrogation and subsequent removal of an 11yr old boy from the flight because he was travelling with his 14yr old sister but no adult guardian, which is apparently not permitted by JQ. This oversight seemed not to have been detected at booking. Or at check-in. Or at bag drop. Or at the boarding gate where their parents bid them farewell and left the airport in the knowledge they had scanned their boarding passes and were on their way to sit safely on the plane in the care of JQ staff.

• Lament that my Apple AirPod Pro noice cancellation is not sufficient to cancel out the mechanical screeching noise made when the landing gear hydraulic system fails on approach and the gear doesn't lower as is typically useful when landing.

• Enjoy the mental picture of the pilot and first-officer doing the "she's stuffed - just try it again - still stuffed - try it again - still stuffed" routine which was accompanied by the screeching of metal going down, and up, and down, and up, and down.

• Enjoy a scenic flight doing loops over Canberra with the reassuringly soothing vibrations of having the landing gear dropped at 250kts.

• Wave at the fire trucks lining the runway like a guard of honour when we landed. Make sure that at least one of the brakes grab harshly during deceleration in such a way that the really stressed passengers believe that the gear has broken off and we're going to hit those big metal kangaroos alongside the runway.

• As the icing on the cake, enjoy the schadenfreude of seeing 200 pax for the return flight to BNE sitting patiently at the gate despite JQ knowing full well that they're not flying a plane with a hydraulic failure back to BNE full of passengers. Subscribe to the return flight on Flighty to watch those pax sit through several further delays until eventually the flight is cancelled at 2140, well after any other flights out of CBR that evening have left.


To be fair though, credit where it is due, so to balance my report:

• The pilot clearly did an excellent job getting the aircraft down without further incident or need for the fire trucks, and that's probably the primary indicator of success for any flight.

• For some reason my fare allowed me to choose between plain or sour cream Pringles as my in-flight snack without needing to pay any extra, which was nice.
Fantastic engaging write up and yes a mistake to fly J* and even sometimes Qantas when they behave like the above!

Hard to see how this is Jetstar's fault... I've found some QF lounge like to scan the JQ boarding pass and click something on the computer whilst others just wave you through with site of a valid card.

Witness the interrogation and subsequent removal of an 11yr old boy from the flight because he was travelling with his 14yr old sister but no adult guardian, which is apparently not permitted by JQ. This oversight seemed not to have been detected at booking. Or at check-in. Or at bag drop. Or at the boarding gate where their parents bid them farewell and left the airport in the knowledge they had scanned their boarding passes and were on their way to sit safely on the plane in the care of JQ staff.
This is also a Qantas group issue and I've seen similar happen on QF, basically they would have checked in without seeing a staff member but the system allows this becuase it could just happen to be the child on a separate booking but also travelling with an adult. I guess the simple fix is to make child only bookings unavailable for online/mobile/kiosk check in but I think some on here would complain about that.

Can I add to the Dodge Ram trucks at Bunnings (true), but the same goes at Woolies car parks….

I checked once and there weren't any, then checked again the following day and two showed up so I quickly nabbed them and gave myself a pat on the back. Going back in the other day to select seats and what not and saw the 'you're leaving in 6 days' reminder! 😳

Turns out I'd booked the right day e.g the 29th but not the right month. I think that as I searched the second time Qantas website showed me the first available J reward seats. As the date looked the same as I was searching for (i.e. 29th) I didn't notice - details details 😁
Ended up cancelling the booking and loosing 12,000 points and buying two seats in J direct with AA.

Live and learn, live and learn.

Ended up cancelling the booking and loosing 12,000 points and buying two seats in J direct with AA.

Ya. And for hotels too. Happened to me twice recently, once with QF hotels and once with Expedia. Right date, wrong month. Both were non-refundable.

Expedia said "We'll gladly refund if the hotel agrees", which they did. QF said "T&C's say no refunds". I'm starting to think QF's attitude towards customer service is not what it ought to be.

Haha yep did this with some VA flights last year. Booked in Feb for March and because the days of the week are the same for both those months (unless a leap year) I didn't realise I was accidentally booking February. A day after booking got the check-in SMS; luckily they were nice to me when I rang up and changed my flights free of charge :)
 
How about booking an AirBNB in Tokyo for 2 nights based on a arrival time and date in Europe after the Japan trip and then realising you are only there for one night Japan time 🤭

I’ve done the same thing with a hotel booking for 7 nights in Tokyo - booked for the right days but the wrong month. Did not discover it until asked to write a review of my recent stay -that I thought was still a month in the future. That was an expensive mistake.

To be honest, as it was an Accor Plus member booking, I was quite cheesed off that they made no attempt to contact me about this after I failed to turn up. The rate was refundable, and so I would have been able to recover probably 4 or 5 of the days if they had made contact about my no-show.
 
Yep - booked the wrong 4 Seasons in SFO - ended up in the zero view second rate one - D’Oh
Did the same in Munich last year, there are two 'Flemings Hotel Munchen' in the city, one in the middle of town and the other out a ways in Schawbing (to be fair, it did say that in the booking but a trap for the uninitiated). Not quite the burbs but close to it. Turned up to the desk at the inner city one only to be told we were in the wrong place. Turned out ok, it was a nice hotel with large and quiet rooms and a nice restaurant strip nearby. Access to the airport train was just as good. Still got our beer n' schnitzels in so am not complaining 😁
 
Some years ago flying back from Cusco and flying on to Iguassu Falls with LAN we had to overnight in Lima so I booked an airport hotel or so I thought - Hotel Costa del Sol Wyndham Lima Aeropuerto
But in town there is this hotel -Hotel Costa del Sol Wyndham - Lima Ciudad.
Of course by mistake I had booked the second. Fortunately saved by a brilliant check in agent when we turned up at the airport hotel. He rang the other property and the booking transferred. Didn't even get charged extra although the airport hotel was slightly dearer that night.
