Who would have thought a discussion on which city was better would be decided by the availability of donuts.

Would you have expected anything more from the eastern staters

After staying out of this thread for a while......

SYD has the tourist attractions, the beaches, the lifestyle etc.

MEL has very few tourist attractions in the City but has the culture (cafe's, theatre etc.) and sport. MEL is also good for lifestyle, in a couple of hours one can be in the wineries, surfing Bell's Beach, driving the Great Ocean Road or skiing for the weekend. You can see why tourists pick SYD over MEL for a quick Aussie visit though.

BNE is just a great, smallish city which has little of any the above apart from the Coast. I don't feel like I live in a rat race though. :D

Tumble weeds are a problem though:p

Depends what you are looking for in a lifestyle, but I long ago decided Sydney was not really for me. But it is probably the most picturesque city.

In about 20 years they'll grow to understand :!:

Well we will certainly grow as all you mexican bandits keep coming across the border to take our highly paid and productive jobs, and women. Send all your money back to feed your extended families, whilst the commonwealth government and large corporates steal all our royalities and reserves to build bigger ivory towers and support ever more non productive eastern states.

Funny :!:

We actually have about 12 people from a WA based company working for us (over east) rather than the other way around. :p

Sydney nod to Melbourne in battle of the booze - Entertainment - theage.com.au

SYDNEY has conceded defeat to Melbourne in the drinking wars.

Small operators will be able to open bars across the city without being forced to serve food following a backdown by the NSW Government.

Premier Morris Iemma last night hailed the new laws as a dramatic transformation of Sydney's drinking culture that would create a "true cosmopolitan city".

The move follows a campaign by the independent MP Clover Moore for more "Melbourne-style" bars to give drinkers an alternative to beer barns filled with poker machines.

This Melbourne versus Sydney debate always amuses me. The Sydneysiders I know stopped seeing Melbourne as a competitor a long time ago.
Exactly. Whenever I hear people talking about the supposed Sydney-Melbourne rivalry, it's only ever Melbournians talking about it. Sydney-siders could not give a rat's @rse. Melbournians need to get over it. It is not a competition.

I'm a born and bred Sydney boy but I love Melbourne, as do most Sydney-siders I know. The two cities are different, and that's what I like.

Now, as for Perth... <yawn>. Actually, that's unkind and I apologise. If I could have lunch every day at Meads (at Mosman Bay) I'd be a happy man. :)

Ahh, now that explains it

Now I will admit to living in Melbourne for five and a half years ... I decided 15 winters was too many and it was time to thaw out :p .

See, the benefit of living in Brisbane is that we can make fun of both Sydney and Melbourne.

True, but it's a shame that is the only thing it has going for it!

OK.The fastest growing states are QLD and WA.WA because of the resources boom.QLD because of lifestyle.Enough said.
Apart from the weather Melbournes main problem is victorians.I well remember when i first came to the sunny coast a letter in the local paper from a truckie. In it he expressed his retirement wish to buy the largest caravan possible and drive around Victoria-VERY SLOWLY.

Re: The view from my "office"

I've always thought the best view of Melbourne was from above as you flew out of MEL.:p:p:shock::lol:;)

It is. Since we know that we get to come back to the best city in the world :p

A bit harsh methinks? Or are you laughing??? Home of the best coffee in Australia and some wonderful restaurants, not to mention cheap eats and Rod Laver is a great venue for large concerts. We prefer Mel over Syd for theatre and concerts, except for the Opera of course.
