Melbourne Drinks Friday August 28

On Friday night? Surely you are kidding.

You know me mate - not kidding, one round of Mojito was about $45 (3 of them) plus me knocking back carlsberg like there was no tomorrow.... I was also in a shout with notzac for a couple each and oh yeah, a round of Yager at at least $7 per shot and I got 6 shots, plus a round of Vodka somethings at prob $5-6 each as well for 6 - it quickly adds up!

Then Mrs munitalP with her taste for good shiraz!

Mr!

Well out of my budget. What is the obsession with attending expensive venues?

Point taken, I think we are getting carried away a bit.

I've never been. penegal seems to have and might be able to advise.

Spice Market is a very nice bar with a bit of novelty about it. It's only been open a year or so? It caters to the 'prestige' end of the market, so it is more expensive than say 1806. However when I've been there I've found the service quite friendly, and unpretentious... Although they did avertise in Torque, whcih apparently means I get a discount as a PCM customer (need to check this one).

The dress code is enforced to a reasonable extent. You will need a collared shirt and don't wear white shoes, but that's about it.

Alternatively, what about the Longroom?

Melbourne Restaurant - The Long Room, 162-168 Collins St, Melb CBD. Ph 9663 7226

Got in ok with Chuck Taylors once so I assume the dress code ain't as stuffy. Probably cheaper too.

Really? In my experience Long Room is more tight with dress code than Spice Market. But Long Room is a cheaper option.

Remember also, that we want somewhere that isn't too noisy so we can hear each other.

I managed a tab of $85 and spent some more in cash - what with buying a bottle of the Domain Chandon and all. (I do know my limits - no Yagers or Mojito for this l'il black duck ...)

I know a place near where I work which has $10 Jugs of "house" beer Friday evenings. ;)

As for my attendance on the 28th - I'm keeping it in mind ... (I've had an interesting/tiring/tough weekend and need to consider this with a clear mind ...)

We could also go back to 1806 but it might get repetitive. They tend to be rather quiet in the earlier hours of the evening. :)

No chance of that, I don't remember going there at all :p, but my credit card says I was there until about 1am.

I'll probably be at Spice Market this Friday if anyone is desperate to check it out.

Maybe we should go for Long Room for this event, as it's more affordable?

Otherwise Tuscan Bar (79 Burke St) is reasonable. It's a similar style to Madame Brussels, but without the crowds.

Or Three Degrees is more of a pub, and a little overpriced for what you get, but there are heaps of tables and chairs. It's a good after work pub. Or the pub near Serfty's work sounds reasonable.

For once I might be able to attend a AFF drinkies in my home town!
The only proviso is if you accept latecomers, say about 9.30-10.00?

Now that is my kind of place. By the way what brand is the "house" beer?
It's generally what they have a surplus of ... often Carlton Drought, sometimes VB, one evening it was pure blonde.

They serve Coriole!:D Been trying to track down their Cab Sav. I'll go check it out myself one day. I know what you mean about Madame Brussels - the service there is pretty slow due to the bad staff:crowd ratio, like Gin Palace is getting these days.

What do they serve other than beer? I hope the house wine or bubbly are decent at least?

Wouldn't know - my efforts have been an after work glass or three with some work associates followed by a quick exit downstairs to the the train ...

Quite frankly I think this discussion is going over the top. Some of us don't need to, or are not going to spend $hundreds for a night of drinks.

I suggest that a more regular bar be selected and those that wish to party on at higher expense can do so later in the evening.

Good Point.

I think if we start at a normal pub, we make the event accessable to everyone. And personally I think getting a good crowd is more important than being in the best bar in town.

After a few hours a smaller group can kick onto one of the more expensive places (e.g. Spice Market, Silk Road, Long Room, Tuscan Bar, Gin Palace, 1806, etc)...

So the format would be similar to the last drinks night, just trying new venues.

Hear hear! Going to be a relatively quiet night for me, I do not like flying hungover!!

Sounds like a good compromise to me...
