And whoever was controlling those aspects, along with "going dark" knew enough about the operation of a 777 to know how to calculate and monitor the fuel required to get to somewhere in Australia.

Well yes, exactly. If they knew the distance and fuel required to get to Australia...but its all just what if's and maybe's..

I just find it astonishing, in this day and age, with all the monitoring and surveillance, that something like an aeroplane can simply disappear.

A Wedgetail has arrived at Pearce, not sure if its related to the MH370 search.

Confirmation now through the Wedgetail will be taking over command and control activity above the search area.

I wonder if they will also task a MRTT to keep it topped up.

There shouldnt have been any issues making PER with the fuel that they had on board. From memory the flight is 5 hours 40 minutes scheduled, so I don't think fuel would have been an issue.

If they had just flown it into RAAF Pearce then the search would have been over before it began! Sorry I'm just being glib.

I have been away from this thread for 4-5 days and still no closer to the wherabouts of MH370. Very sad.

Unfortunately too much guesswork and very few facts. And who knows if even the few facts they do have are actually facts and not speculation anyway.

No it's not consistent at all, but who knows, it's as good as the next person's guess. Even the 777 captain states before he starts his guess:
"Without the intent to bring blame to anyone without having proof of it I can see the following scenario"

Of course it is consistent with the little evidence we have-loss of info.Turn back seen on radar, flying to way points and the satellite pings which indicate the plane was in the air for ~8 hours.
Fire, calamitous decompression just don't fit with that evidence.About the only thing that does is that it is the deliberate act of someone.
No other scenario is as likely.

What are the chances of ditching an aircraft in the middle of the ocean and being successful in keeping it in one piece?

Looks like we are at the end-game now.

With zero evidence of where the plane is, why the plane went off radar, what the problem was, and most importantly, how it all transpired......the authorities have handed us this final doozie:
Missing Malaysia Airlines plane: Minister says 'deliberate' act responsible

Given the few facts to date, it is difficult to imagine a logical conclusion that did not involve a "deliberate act". Unknown is the "who" though.

Given no communication and what had been turned off, and later flight changes, I think that one can rule out it being some form of pure accident.

I don't think anyone should make any rulings at all , but do you mean rule out?
Yes..and EDITED

However if it is accurate on the flight changes I cannot envisage that a communication of some type could not have been made, unless either the pilots/crew deliberately did not want to communicate, or that someone deliberately prevented the pilots from communicating.

Pilots are VERY well trained to communicate in emergency situations, and had more than one means to. Add in the transponder being turned off and it only increases the odds of some form of "deliberate act".

Given that there has not even been any debris found, I have my doubts we will ever know what really happened to this flight and/or where in the world it actually landed or crashed

Very very strange indeed and I really feel for all the families/friends who knew people on the flight, the grief that they must go through daily hearing all the rubbish and changing stories from the media must be beyond heartbreaking

Why wouldn't you just do as what the Ethiopian plane did going to Geneva a month ago? There shouldnt have been any issues making PER with the fuel that they had on board. From memory the flight is 5 hours 40 minutes scheduled, so I don't think fuel would have been an issue.

The idiots who hijacked the Ethiopian flight expected the 767 to be able to take them to Australia because the a/c had the range however the sector was only ADD/NBO so whilst MH370 would have had the fuel, the ET flight did not or as they'd say in Top Gun "hey Mav, we've got no fuel for this".

The pprune thread also had a link (below) to the ATC transcript with MH370.

I am not talking about the ditching near the Comoros, but the recent Ethiopian hijacking where the co-pilot took the plane to Geneva when their destination was Rome.
