I think that any way you look at this incident it's a big black eye for Malaysian aviation.

Agree. It's astonishing how much misinformation they have released - internet/media speculation is one thing, but in this case a lot of incorrect information has come directly from officials holding senior positions. I can't think of any reasonable explanation for some of the incorrect things they have said. Perhaps some of these people are going on TV and just blurting out rumours they heard around the water cooler? It's unbelievable that they would say anything that has not been established as a fact.

Not everywhere has quite the same controls around release of information and / or they may believe that they want to get as much information out there as possible as it shows the world they are doing something. Keep in mind that (thankfully) large aircraft don't go crashing on a daily basis, as such the officials are probably not exactly used to what needs to be said and done, they are probably feeling their way through this situation.

It is probably also not helping that the 24 x 7 news cycle has gone into overdrive, with every "expert" all wanting their 15 minutes. Hell you've got ACA sniffing around looking for dirt at the same time you've got news.com.au doing passport safety articles all in response to this event who's only real tie to Australia is the fact that 6 aussies where on board. Not to diminish what those people have gone through, but that's the same number that could be killed on a single day in a single state on the roads. So with that sort of response in one country which did not have a significant tie to the event, imagine what they are going through with the weight of the worlds media jumping on every remark, every gesture getting analysed (*by crackpots half the time), every theory becoming folk law, every line of investigation becoming "it must have been this" despite no actual evidence to support...

Hell, you have "the" Rupert Murdoch (not just his papers) coming up with his own theories posted to his twitter account, there is no way the officials can win.

Is it any wonder that we're seeing so many mistakes / misinformation...

(Yes in case your wondering, no I have little respect for what the worlds media has become, and I do believe that in the revolution they will be the first against the wall)

It's unbelievable that they would say anything that has not been established as a fact.

I mostly agree with this... except for the whole 'the plane could still be ok' thing they were peddling for so long.

12 hours late late, obviously run out of fuel at that stage, no reported landing anywhere, just admit the plane has crashed.

I didn't wish to be flippant in the face of an obvious tragedy. But at this stage I think anything might go.

People were asking about Alien abductions? Those 'of an age' might remember the days of Dr Who with Lieut. Lethbridge-Stewart (Yes, Sah!!) in the ? '70s.

They were watching an aircraft blipping across a radar screen.

Blip suddenly becomes stationary.

"Oh, my God" says Lieut Lethbridge-Stewart (Yes, Sah)! "They are falling straight down!!!!"

The Doctor contemplates for a second and then says the obvious:

"Or rising straight up!"

Which the airplane was indeed doing at the time, captured by the baddies.

Before you scoff, remember there has been no debris found .....

The conspiracy theory that was on PPRuNe and FT early was that the Chinese had hijacked the plane as they wanted the expertise of those Freescale employees.long since deleted.

Another piece of evidence that a bomb wasn't involved-
The Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organisation, which watches out for nuclear weapons tests worldwide, looked at its data for the last few days to see if its infrasound – below the range of human hearing – recordings, normally used to seek out the muffled crump of underground tests, contained any signature of an aircraft explosion. But it found nothing.

Malaysian plane sent out engine data before vanishing - tech - 11 March 2014 - New Scientist

I can't imagine the Australian government, or military, would ever release information that wasn't 100% verified.

At this point in time, this would seem to be the most logical explanation....

Unfortunately, the way it's going with mistakes by the govt, airport and military, it's a black eye for the country.

I wonder how the Malaysian people are viewing this whole thing.

The ones closer to the capital aren't too afraid to speak up about the attitudes (or lack thereof) of their government...

(Yes in case your wondering, no I have little respect for what the worlds media has become, and I do believe that in the revolution they will be the first against the wall)

O/T but they will either be the first against the wall or the ones (unfortunately) pulling the trigger. Thankfully Murdoch himself only has a few years left (at least I think).

I can't imagine the Australian government, or military, would ever release information that wasn't 100% verified.

Why not? They are just a "dumb" relay source, especially since they have little intimate involvement in the incident (sending cursory assistance to search for the plane and taking a superficial diplomatic interest in the handful of victims who were Australians on board does not count as significant intimate involvement).

Exactly. There have been a number of situations, can think of two instances involving refugees, where the government has had to substantially alter initial statements.
Unfortunately information does not always flow well

Rupert's mum lived to be 102 I think so there could be a fair wait!
