That black dot maybe the Seychelles. Diego Garcia is a military base run by the US south of the Maldives which in turn is south of India.

I didn't think all seat cushions were designed to be used as floatation devices, just some. Regardless, if the plane hit the water at a relatively low speed and didn't break up, the reason there's no sign of the cushions would be because they're still inside the plane at the bottom of the ocean. Reminds me of a baywatch episode where a plane ditched but only had a slow leak.

Also might not find cushions in the sea if they're on the land somewhere...

I don't believe I've ever heard a FA announce that cushions may be used as a flotation device but only if you're in a lucky seat!!

Just looking at that black dot on flyertalk and it is actually the location of the satellite that received the last ping.

Thanks, I now understand. Diego Garcia is located further south that the black spot on the satelitte photo. Maybe around south east in the legend in the above photo/screen shot.....

I dont think so, that plane went to FL450 for a reason, I am betting pressurisation was off.

I wouldn't have thought they'd have the performance available to get to FL450...not from a normal climb anyway. So I come back to wondering if anyone was actually flying it?

Ignoring the error with regard to the number of engines...shutting down an engine will not increase the range. It will reduce it by about 20%. It may be possible to increase the endurance of an aircraft by shutting down an engine (P3s on patrol), but they are able to feather their propellors and so reduce drag to a minimum, whereas jet engines sit there like great big speedbrakes.

With all the ACARs talk, in your opinion how hard is it to turn off and is this a procedure most pilots are familiar with?

I just think that because there have been no demands or claims made means that this cant be a hijacking or terrorist plot.
If you want a way out scenario what if this plane had been deliberately put down on Diego Garcia.Would you think the US would ever want that to be public knowledge?

But what worries me is that it was a terrorist plot and their idea is to create the greatest amount of doubt and anxiety into the travelling public.What better way than having the plane disappear with no evidence of how it was done.Either crashed into the Indian Ocean where the depth reaches up to 7000 metres in that arc or landing or crashing in an isolated region of the Stans where others on the ground collect the black boxes so no record of the whys and wherefores of the hijack are known.

I would think the US installations in Diego Garcia had picked up the unidentified blip.
