Miles on Sale

You can transfer miles but the limit is transfers and purchases so if you have bought 40000 miles then no go.And AA charges for transferring so really not a good option.

Buy and gift:
"buyAAmiles and giftAAmiles transactions are limited to a combined maximum of 40,000 miles, per account, per calendar year."

Share:
"For a limited time, members can transfer and receive up to 25,000 miles per transaction and up to 100,000 per account, per calendar year. "

Sharing miles does not count toward the same annual limit as buy/gift.

So yup, you can buy, then on top of that do a transfer from someone else's (eg, partner or family member) account, to get more than 40k (before the bonus) into your account annually.

A few points about redemptions which may be helpful:
Routing:
On an all-partner award (which is the award that most of us here at AFF would be using), you must use the most direct routing. This is determined by either:
1. A published fare's explicitly approved routing (This is where EF or KVS comes to the rescue); or

Apparently the most-direct-routing rule has been abolished. Therefore, instead of say SYD-HKG on BA/QF F, why not:

SYD-MEL (QF J)
MEL-SIN (QF F)
SIN-HKG (CX F if available, if not CX J)
HKG-somewhere else in china (so as not to exceed max permissible mileage)

Was told by an AAgent SYD/MEL to HKG via SIN is too much of a detour, but by throwing another destination as the final (China works well), you can circumvent this, just do not travel this last sector if you do not wish to, and ticket the return leg separately)

Makes for more interesting travels.

In the T & C's there is still a reference to a 40000 mile combined limit. Can you point me to the reference where this has been relaxed? I would love to pick up another 15000 miles and travel back from Europe in J.

Its on the AA website (I cant post a link yet... too few posts)

Gifting miles are not the same as sharing (i.e. a transfer). Hence a transfer does not fall under the 40k mile limit. The fact that they allow transfers of up to 100,000 miles annually is indicative of this.

Yes, you're correct. Here is the quote:

Each AAdvantage member is limited to receiving, in a calendar year, a combined total of no more than forty thousand (40,000) AAdvantage miles. Miles purchased through the buyAAmiles program or received as a gift through the giftAAmiles program both count against this total. Using the shareAAmiles program, each AAdvantage member is limited to receiving no more than fifteen thousand (15,000) AAdvantage miles, and may transfer no more than sixty thousand (60,000) AAdvantage miles out of their AAdvantage account in a calendar year. Any AAdvantage miles purchased or transfered in excess of such amount will not be posted to the member's account, regardless whether payment has been remitted for such AAdvantage miles, and American Airlines has no obligation to reimburse such remitted amounts.

There is a clear difference here between 'buy/gift" and "transfer".

Will watch this thread and if they bump it to 100,000 (like last year - thanks drron) then I will be in there like flynn.

When redeeming in North America, can anyone explain the difference between 'business/first' and 'premium'?

I believe premium refers to first class on a flight with a 3 class service, while business/first refers to the higher cabin class in a 2 class service (i.e. north american style domestic first class, much like domestic business elsewhere)

Typical that's the case as soon as I post that is has ended.

Was cleaning out emails from a few months and there appears to have been a better offer back then. Perhaps it is time to wait for another offer before the end of the year.

Re: Miles on Sale - Dummy booking

Well I've bought/arranged transfer of 120000 miles (including bonuses) for 2 J tickets SYD-CDG next year. I can see availability on QFF for July 2012 so I thought I'd call AA (free on Google phone via Gmail) and see how easy it is. Answer - fantastic. Call was only 11 minutes (after 4 minutes waiting). Not only was J availability confirmed but the delightful AA Angel told me that I could travel via HKG or alternatively SIN, BKK or NRT. Assuming all works well this will be the best value J-ticket I have ever bought from SYD- Europe: thanks to AA bonus miles and the strong $A.

Great to hear so easy & available. Did you already have miles with bonus and purchased more ? I bought the 40k in early July still waiting for the bonus miles now have to wait until next year to buy another 40.

I bought 45000 miles each and my son will transfer in an additional 15000 miles each. Initial purchases have both been credited so it's now a wait for the bonuses - until maybe October or sooner. We won't travel until September 2012 so that should work out fine.
