Horrible day in New York. There are tornados down south and some wild weather sweeping into New York. Decided it was a good morning to go to MOMA, which was just a short walk from where we were staying. We were able to buy seniors tickets from the ticket machine and then upstairs to sit and wait for the 10:30 open.
We were a bit bemused to look down and see huge queues of people getting their tickets from ticket sellers. We later discovered these were “special” tickets, military, various tourist passes etc.
Straight in at 10:30 and glad we were early as people kept flooding in. Fortunately we had seen “starry night” at an impressionist exhibition in Canberra, so were able to avoid the scrum around that. Fabulous selection of paintings - even a Frida Kahlo.
Floors 3 and 4 were the later modern works. Some we loved, some not. The series we really enjoyed was Gerard Richter’s Red Army paintings.
There seemed to be something happening on 5th Avenue. We discover it was a funeral for a guy, killed in Afghanistan, who was also a decorated fireman. Huge numbers of police and firefighters. We decided not to watch it, as it didn’t seem appropriate for us to do so.
By this stage all my muscles and joints were on strike, so back to the hotel, with a quick stop at the fresh food place to load up on raspberries and blue berries. They had lots of prepared food, so I added tomato soup and a real, non sweet, whole meal roll.
