Missy Higgins rants about Vegetarian options on-board

It would be wonderful for all travellers to receive a quality meal onboard. I don't think the issue is about being vegetarian.

I think to a point, it is.

Can you imagine the outrage if a Muslim was served pork? Or a Hindu served beef? Or a Jew served a non-Kosher meal? Choosing to obey a certain religion and its customs is a lifestyle choice.

Yet someone who is vegetarian or vegan and gets served food that is inedible to them for medical reasons is just expected to cop it sweet and shut up? Sorry, but no.

This is just something that frustrates me no end. I don't mean to get all preachy about it, but a few very bad experiences this year (admittedly not with QF) have made me speak up more about the topic. I didn't really appreciate how serious it could be until I ended up having to use my epi-pen mid-flight a couple of months ago due to an epic catering stuff up.

Maybe it's ASP? I flew SYD-ASP last week in J and when the meal arrived, I laughed because I honestly thought the cabin crew were joking when they offered me the normal meal. I forget what it was, but I would not have fed it to my dog. Luckily they had some spares from down the back, so I had one of those (some kind of heated wrap)

I had the wrap a few weeks ago as well.

IMHO airline catering is getting worse and worse and that is in all classes not just whY.

Are they cost cutting??

Dietary requirements make it hard for catering sometimes..

Having to use the epi pen is a huge stuff up.

I have a friend who said no nuts on the salad at a cafe and unaware at this stage it was preprepared and the staff went about and picked the nuts out of the salad and she found one and then had to use a epi-pen.

Maybe she had booked very close to departure and a back up meal was used.

No the post expresses her frustration at continued poor vegetarian meals over her years requesting them. The latest flight appears to be the proverbial straw

I did post a thread about the incident on AFF here. It didn't happen on a QF flight, but Qantas did end up helping me out in the end. Sometimes they get customer service right :)

I understand that,

My last line of my post will be deleted.

I am not suppose to have raw sugar and I was told just to have a little bit and it will be fine.

I thought it would be helpful to post the link to the actual Facebook post for those who hadn't read it.
I was just being lazy quoting your post as a way of linking it

That is fine,

I looked at it again and gave myself a face palm.

If you want to have a good meal, go to a restaurant. Planes have limited facilities and dare I say it, pre-prepared meals and no chefs on board. What do you expect, really ?
The airlines should limit their marketing blurb to reality and not what they think people want to see and hear.

Personally my expectations on airline meals are not that much. I do not rave on about them but occasionally criticise them. It does not need to be tasty. Bland is fine as long as it is edible.

I saw this thread when out and about this afternoon and decided to respond when I was home.
I see many have since posted in a similar vein that I intend(ed) to.
The early animosity to Ms Higgins was rather disappointing but sadly not surprising.
Calling herself a 'celebrity' was something of an own goal, but otherwise it was a well written, humorous and light hearted critique of QF's vego offerings.
And where did the armpits (and apparently their blatant display to all and sundry) come into it? Does the poster who alleged this actually know this or is it just stereotypical bunk?
Given the frequent serious rants re airline food on this forum, I think we can cut Ms Higgins some serious slack here, in fact her complaint has far more class about it than most of the ones aired on AFF.
Disclaimer: not vego, and only familiar with a tiny portion of her work (which is OK).

Is Qantas discriminating against vegetarians. I eat the normal food and often wonder that Qantas does not show even the slightest consideration in the taste department in the meal they are offering me. Such is life. Move on.

I am not a hippy and don't shave my armpits either.

Who is Missy Higgins again?

She's a celebrity, according to Missy Higgins.

She was in Y? Her career's obviously going well then.

Like the vast majority of Australians who fly.

Remind me never to become employed then. can't be bothered if I have to start flying Y.

Food quality could always be increased, so could the airfare cost. If you have any public profile people are going to jump on you, assuming you're using it - rock and a hard place really. As for anyone questioning her past or future success, I'll ignore the ad hominem and suggest a popular artist isn't necessarily a good one ;)

The worst thing about the QF VGML is the little gluten-free cake that tastes like ashes.

Sweet poison. ..awful, disgusting part of Y meal. I reckon a fruits option, if there is one, would suit me better than what QF offer to economy pax.

I have been on flights where there are celebs flying and they are in whY.

I was on a flight from TSV to BNE one Sunday morning and there was an entire band who I have no idea who is and the where in whY.

There was a concert in town with international bands.

The band and artist was a known band and also have done CD's as well.

When we landed in BNE there was some kids with signs at the airport.

Honestly, if I had an allergy that was so severe that it needed an epi pen then there is no way I'd eat the food provided to me on a plane. Why take that risk? It's not like being on the ground with access to medical facilities. I think it is unreasonable to expect an airline to get that right. It's your risk.

All it would take would be a knife contaminated with the offending protein to be used on the dish prepared for you. Preparing meals for planes isn't a cottage industry.

As far as meal choices goes, it is a plane. The meals served generally in Y I've found are pretty poor and at most I'll have tea or coffee. I dislike biscuits so I don't eat them. I don't eat pasta as I avoid wheat. So I eat before or afterwards. If they can't get mainstream right then adding to that complexity isn't going to work.

QF offer 13 different meal options in MMB, so the added complexity is something QF already offer. I suspect, having seem some of the dire meals served to my vegetarian daughter, that they'd be better not offering these options at all if they can't at least reach the standard of the regular Y meal. It appears that QF seem to deliver a fairly poor vegan meal regardless of the vegetarian option chosen.

I love it when an "artistic celeb" tries to be clever with words....and falls flat on their face. This is a fabulous example of such a thing. "Slithers" is all I have to say!!!

In all seriousness, a rarity for me, I suspect she probably does have a fair point about Y food, but then it is all pretty ordinary. On Y flights to Blighty I rarely even try the food, and much prefer dining at the airport prior to departure, at the stop over, and then upon arrival.

As for celebrities, if I have to google them, then they, and their views, are of little consequence to me.

....and yes in my mad ramblings I am frequently grammatically incorrect, often choose the incorrect words and rarely make sense....but I know I am a pretentious half wit. :p
