Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone has more than one Amex at the same time (Australia only) and if you do what's the point of it? E.g. having the charge card and then having an Amex credit card (that is non reserve).

I am more curious as to if there is an 'unseen' benefit by the majority that we can learn from

You'll find many of us have had multiple AMEX cards at the same time. There’s a large number of reasons/benefits including, inter alia:

1) Opportunities to earn points for different programmes.

2) Multiple cash back opportunities.

3) (some what historically now) Small shop offers.

I concur with Dr Ralph. I'm keeping my old BMW AMEX which got moved to a plain Gold AMEX many years ago. It is fee free and I grab all the cashback offers that I find of good value to me. It doesn't get any spend on it unless there is an offer.

Most of my spend goes on the Reserve as it has a longer interest free period than the Platinum Charge. I typically only use the charge if I need to pay for something between its statement starting and before the Reserve statement finishing.

Oh that's such a good point the extra 10 days interest free period!!!

I have 3. The edge still earns more points at supermarkets and the annual fee is offset by the credit anyway, so it’s net win.
The reserve gives me free travel credit for no annual fee (no longer available) and the plat is my main card.

I have 2 Amex cards, a "Rewards advantage" charge card (was originally a green charge card) and a blue credit card (not sure of actual nomenclature). As well as the reasons mentioned above, I utilise the fact that the cards have different billing dates (1st for credit, 16th for charge) which allows to improve my cash flow by using the card with the longest time to billing.

I have, the same as @Cynicor and for the same reasons.

Until 6 months ago, I had a Business Accelerator which I kept to redeem cashback offers across multiple cards. These had dried up recently and I cancelled it as not earning its keep (ironically the current Officeworks offer would have enabled that)

I've got an Explorer and a Platinum Edge. Basically for these reasons:
  1. Any supermarket or fuel spend (which is a large portion of my spend these days) goes on the Plat Edge, earning at 3 pts/$ for these categories. Woolies and Coles giftcards, through their respective websites, also earn at this rate as those sites are coded as supermarkets (win!).
  2. Any other spend goes on the Explorer at 2 pts/$.
All of my point earning comes from everyday spend, so choosing the right card to maximise the point earning of each and every transaction is paramount. I'm not fortunate enough to own a business and funnel thousands/millions of dollars worth of spend through the cards to rack up heaps of points, so I do what I can with what little I have.
And for all the statement credits (when a good one rolls around which is not as often as they used to), I've got multiple supplementary cards per primary card.
Complicated system according to friends and colleagues, but the effort does result in some sweet J flying that would otherwise not be possible!

This ….

Both mine are fee free for life and I use one of them only for flights to earn bonus points

completely did not think about gift cards counting as 3 points/$ with the platinum edge! thats so good

Maybe a bit off topic but I'm curious for those with 2 cards like the explorer and plat edge, do you go/would be better to with minimum credit limit for both? or would this be a very situational thing? I've also recently got the explorer additional card (initially planning to cancel my plat edge but didn't because of the 3pts/$ for petrol and supermarket), was thinking of setting my plat edge to minimum and kept a higher credit on explorer in case of big purchases.

i dont have both atm but i would say if you do buy gift cards from woolies/coles/bigw then perhaps dont set it too low..? given if it doesnt interfere with your other applications

Are there any AMEX cards you can still get without waiting the 18 months, used to be that the David Jones card didn't count towards other AMEX cards. Not up to date with the current rules of applying with AMEX and how long to wait between applications
