Moving carry on luggage to another overhead bin??

Airlines should take a page out of Norwegian
Low fare = underseat carry on
Low fare plus = underseat+overheat+23kg checked. If overhead already full when you board it gets gate checked

Flex= underseat+ guaranteed overhead+ 2x23kg checked. Boarding before Lowfare plus

Easyjet do something similar, they charge for larger carry-ons (wheelaboards and larger backpacks). In fact they yield manage it so that when demand for overheads are high (and allocated space is filling up) they charge more. Often on business routes/timings can be cheaper to check a bag than carry on whereas for leisure routes it is more likely to be the other way around.

Not sure I'm a fan of the yield management aspect, but it does make a lot of sense to charge for larger carry-ons (or offer it as a status perk) and also seems fairer to charge a similar price to bring 15kg on board vs checking it in (yes there is the handling cost, but there are also costs associated with taking 5 mins longer to board because the o/h bins are jammed full).

I've been on airlines where all cabin baggage had to be tagged (using those paper tags with elastic cord). This not only lets the airline check /charge for bags that shouldn't be cabin bags, but could also be used to clearly distinguish which bags are ok to to go overhead using one colour, and which are underseat personal bags using another colour..

But of course, the above requires more staff..and the move to make flying more like using a vending machine will mean this wont happen.
and then you get airlines, like BA, that tag bags to go under the seat for people who don't have underseat space (such as people in row 1 or a bulkhead row).

Well they didn't tag my computer bag even though I had no underseat storage in Row 2.

I’d have got up, swapped the bags back and let her know my priority was higher than hers.
Nothing worse than entitled wannabes messing your day up.

I've had someone have a go at me for moving their jacket in top of a backpack to make room for my bag. Qantas flightie handled it by taking my bag elsewhere and delivered me chocolates later.
Haven't looked lately, but they used to have hooks on the back of the seats to hang your jacket on.

I had this happen to me on Tuesday. We were in Row 1 and therefore all bags must go up. We boarded about mid-way through boarding and the bins over row 1 & 2 were closed. BA has recently started doing this which I like, as it stops people walking past and putting bags in them (including those in Club Europe, but in row 3 and further back etc. It has worked well as we tend to board late and each time it has meant that there has been space above our seats. Anyway, we stowed our 2x carry on suitcases and then our backpacks were top and tailed so they only took up space as if it was 1 bag. All OK so far.

Fast forward to near the end of the flight, where I went to get my power cable. That's odd, my backpack was gone. Checked above row 3, nothing. Row 4, nothing.

The gent across the aisle in row 2 then "suggests" it may have been further back. Imagine my surprise to see it back at row 6.

Mrs FB then sheepishly mentioned that she noticed him moving bags around when they boarded (late), so that must have been when it happened. Clearly self-entitled so and so's and what was interesting after having seen the pax manifest on the iPad left in the galley, they had no status at all and weren't crediting to any OW program. So just a bunch of rude, clueless people.

Anyway, the FA sensing my disgust offered to store it in the cupboard at the front so that as we deplaned I didn't have to wrestle my way back to row 6 to get my bag, which had been correctly stowed above our seats originally before said over-entitled person decided his groups bags were more important than mine.

So at MEL due to expected abuse of carry-on they are going around giving these tags for peoples second bag.20240125_184936.jpg

But since then I've watched several people remove and bin the tags so they can carry-on more.

BA do that by default. Doesn't matter if people remove them, FA's come through and take them out of the overhead bins and direct them to put under the seat in front.

Yeah I do not like people to touch my bag. What about if you did not see people behind the back, they may plant some stuff inside your bag's pocket? What about if they took some stuff from your bag?

Always lock the carry-on I put in overhead bin, and choose a bag with no accessible pockets etc, then you worry less about theft or someone putting something in your bag.

And sure they can break locks etc but that effort is likely to be noticed, so they'd go for an unlocked or otherwise more accessible bag.

While I think it’s a little paranoid to worry about that sort of thing (any more than normal), your comments here make me wonder whether there might be legalities involved in letting someone fiddle with your bags? Don’t some customs/immigrations processes involve signing a form which says you’ve had total control over your stuff? Notsomuch a thing for domestic I guess.

That’s why I place my gear in the opposite overhead bin. That way, I can see my bags from my seat, instead of directly above me.
