Excellent news...now i'm a krisflyer kinda guy who usually tries to use MR points for J saver redemptions. This opens things up a bit - would appreciate thoughts on which of these programs have the best J award availability (using Singapore J savers as a baseline)

I find the new redemption rates with Amex a breath of fresh air. I think it changes everything. Now we will all have the option of using OW or *A. Previously *A using Singapore Airlines J Saver rates used to be the best deal. But now it appears CX has a slight advantage

Example:

Perth - Singapore - Frankfurt - New York City
Return J Saver rates using Singapore Airlines new redemption rates: 102 500 * 2 = 205 000 MR/KF points

Perth - Hong Kong - New York City
J Round Trip Ticket using Air Miles (CX): 175 000 MR/AM points

Another really promising aspect of the changes is buying points from AA and topping up with Amex --> SPG with the new redemption rates of 40 000 MR --> 25 000 AA points.
Now you can get F one way fares from Aust - USA / Europe for VERY affordable prices

Currently it costs around $1150 to purchase 55 000 AA points. Transfer 40 000 Amex Points --> 25 000 SPG Points = 25 000 AA points. That gives you a total of 80 000 points

Now you can fly Aust - USA/Europe for $1150 + 40 000 Amex points + Taxes

Now thats value!

Also, for reference on how good it is using Asia Miles vs QF, QF SYD-LAX Y/J/F return you need 60K/120K/180K Asia Miles, for QF SYD-LAX-JFK Y/J/F return you need 90K/145K/220K miles.

I would say sweet spot is return J awards for 120K/145K Asia Miles for LAX/JFK from SYD on QF (A380!).

You know how many miles you need in QFF to redeem the same award!

Looks like I will fly QF once again! At least for Trans Pac direct to USA!

How do you check Qf award availability through asiamiles site without filling out a request form? - you can see the CX availability, but not partners.

This has given me some mental exercise! Need to calculate whether we earn sufficient points to pay for 50 Starwood nights, as well as all the air, for the year, and whether it's better to use points to earn status with Starwood, and pay for some air tkts to earn status with QF. Too much I think about. Anyone want to do some consulting for me?

I charge $100 an hour consulting fees :)

A comparison of CX v QF v AA (v MH) would be great..

Might have to activate my CX Gold from Amex!!

No doubt the shift in the AUD has helped these changes!!

I did a comparison for all (major) destinations departing from Sydney using MR points. We now get 1.6x more Asiamiles or Qantas points than AA points for each MR point.
While AA requires fewer miles than CX in almost all cases except for economy class to Asia, taking into account that we get 1.6x more Asiamiles than AA miles changes the picture quite a bit. There are now only three regions where it requires less MR points when transfering to AA instead of CX: North China, Middle America and Middle East in Business or First class. For all other classes and destinations, the required amount of CX miles is less than 1.6x the required amount in AA miles.

Of course this does not take into account that AA usually charges much less fees than CX, but only compares the required points.

There is not a single class or destination where QF miles are better than CX miles. For most economy class destinations it is better to use QF than AA, but for anything else AA is much better than QF. I did not find an MH chart, so cannot compare it.

Ok. For MH you need to sign up to Enrich and log in and do a dummy redemption. I have a few below: Hopefully someone can help us work out if it's anygood compared to Asiamiles etc.

SYD-KUL-SYD (38250 miles) return in Y
SYD-KUL-SYD (68000 miles) return in J
SYD-KUL-SYD (93500 miles) return in F

SYD-HKG-SYD (51000 miles) return in Y
SYD-HKG-SYD (93500 miles) return in J

SYD-KUL-NRT (68000 miles) return in Y
SYD-KUL-NRT (102000 miles) return in J

SYD-KUL-LAX (85000 miles) return in Y
SYD-KUL-LAX (123300 miles) return in J

SYD-KUL-LHR (85000 miles) return in Y
SYD-KUL-LHR (123300 miles) return in J

For one way just half the required miles...

Cheers,
K.

What is the best way to get AA miles? To buy them? If I had to transfer from AMEX MR, is it best to transfer to SPG then transfer to AA? Is that the best deal?

I like this very much.

Quick example - PER-SIN-PER 50k in J through AsiaMiles (vs 100k on QF)

Now the question is, how can I get much more Amex MR miles? I already have Plat Charge, Plat Reserve and Plat Edge. I don't think I can get more bonus points .....

Now I just wish they have those "5000 points per 5 transactions" promo again!

Spend more money :)
