NBN Discussion

i didn't know that!
ill take that into consideration
definitely will help with pausing mine if im away also
I don't know of any other ISP that allows you to pause a service.
Just be aware that you can only pause for up to 60 days. When we are away longer, I just log into my account via my mobile, unpause for a day or two then pause again.
PM me if you ever want a referral, I'm pretty sure we both get something.

hi all
can i ask if anyone is hopping about through different NBN providers?
Each NBN providers seem to offer some sort of discount for their plans for 6 months give or take.

Pretty much so. In the past I called ABB and said I'm happy to stay on if they can do something about their price. They weren't interested. Last time around with ABB they came to the party and offered me a discount. When that expires I'll ask again and changed if need be.

Launtel are the only RSP that offer pausing as far as I know.

As an alternative, Future Broadband are the only RSP that I know of which offers discounts for existing customers, rather than discounts for new customers - pay for 6 months up front and get 7.5% discount. With 1000/50 speed for example, you can have the unlimited plan for $129.50/mth (vs list price of $140/mth and Aussie’s $149/mth).

NBN is supposedly being upgraded from FTTN to a proper fibre connection to the home in many (perhaps most) places. My town was announced in the early phase of this, and new leads were pulled through the pits months ago, but as yet no fibre. No sign of any activity at all. Beyond the initial announcements, the NBN website is devoid of any information, especially any form of timeline. Has anyone seen anything?

Best site to check is Launtel.
They have an FTTP upgrade checker:
Actually all that does is tell me we aren't on the NBNs plans (!) and tries to sell me something else. There must be an actual NBN plan, but they're sure keeping it close to their chest.

Depending on how you want to look at it, Launtel offer me a discount as an existing customer in that my rate is grandfathered. I can't be certain however how long that price will remain.
Whilst the regular price for 50/20 is $3.40/day discounted to new customers at $2.50 for a period of time, I pay $2.86 ongoing.

Ahahaha! Collegue in Spain just got speed upgrade.

"There are two fiber plans her, 300/300 (or 350 or something) and what was 600/600 but just got upgraded to 1000/1000. Paying EURO55 / month including the phone line"
And that just shows how far behind reality we are in Oz.

While it is obvious that such service to the entire Australian population cannot be achieved (due to vast distances and much lower population density in many places), the best I can get is 50/20Mbps for around $70-80/month (I pay $85 but that includes Fetch-TV). I would happily pay the equivalent of EURO55 for 100/40M service, but alas the delivery technology to my home is not capable of any more than 50/20. I have three choices - relocate, wait for NBN to catch up with reality, try 5G.

Maybe I should try WFS (Work From Spain)?

But the NBN fibre "could" be upgraded to achieve 1Gbps if they wanted. 10Gbps is also achievable over fibre and available in some countries. Theoretically, optical fibre can achive much higger rates and 319 Terabits per second has been shown to be possible. Even the NBN over old Opuns/Telstra Cables can easily achieve 250 now and is capable of 1000/1000.

We are suffering from a legacy of "the father" of Australian internet (sic), Malcoml Malcolm Turnbull.

Just remember the phrase "Do it once. Do it right. Do it with fibre."

IMHO, despite the hype, 5G is quite fast but the infrastructure to support many many users is not there and probably never will be. Optican fibre is essentially infinately upgradable.

I'm quite happy with the 250 I get from my Telstra NBN connection over old Telstra cables. Upload spped is quite slow but not a great issue.

...
IIRC it was the Gillard govt that announced it and Stephen Conroy in charge of the NBN rollout. Malcolm ran his passion fingers over it to massage it into something else just as he did with the Murray Darling water scheme to the great benefit of his banker mates. I did say banker btw.
The same week Gillard announced the NBN, Sth Korea announced it would introduce a 100mBps wireless internet. I think this would have been a much better option for Australia given distance and terrain and a network not constrained by old tech (wires). I held out for something better until 10 months ago when I finally succumbed to the NBN.

Ah but don't make the mistake that some politicians have done and talk about "wires". It's fibre optic cable if implemented correctly, as now appears to be being done.

What is this thing you call fibre?

Apparently something easily dug up in my area. We've had no NBN since Monday, Hundreds of people offline and NBN have told our local MPs that its only a "small outage".

Oh, how I wish there was some here to be dug up ...

We might be able to spare some copper cable here as many of my neighbours have given up with physical connections and rely totally on 4G/5G. But can't help with finding you any fibre ... that stuff must be made from hens teeth as there is none to be found around here.

We rely on NBN as we have almost no phone coverage. I can just get service if I tuck my phone into one of the upstairs bedroom windows. But otherwise have no hopes of even making a phonecall without wifi.

It's made from non-cannabanoid plants I believe?

Most telecos these days have wifi calling on post-paid plans.

Yes, we use wifi calling regularly, its the only way we can make a phone call, ie our service is that poor. But no wifi at the moment due to no NBN.
