NBN Discussion

It's worth noting that I'm with a suburban area, and according to Telstra the line length is 726 m.

If you're that close and neighbours still on list, I'd say the 'line is too long' comment is a load of baloney.

Have any of your neighbours been connected?

Nobody in the street. ISP has actually looked at a couple of other addresses in the court, with the same result. Every other street in the estate is ok! To add insult to it, the other day watched some contractors pulling fibre through the pits for FTTP for a new estate down the road. There will be no houses there for at least a year. I have a nasty feeling that those houses will be built before this is resolved.

Anyway...6 week update. No phone. No net.

I guess that's not really an update, is it?

This Checkout has a good video on the telco and internet industry and how to launch a TIO.

TIO is well launched. They have no power at all over the NBN, so it's a bit pointless. They'll get to that comment eventually.

Tend to agree and the NBN seems fixated on passing as many homes as possible as quickly as possible, and worry about all the stuff ups later

The management bonus for senior execs and the kudos to Malcolm are probably tied to the number of homes they report they have 'passed' not 'connected'.

We had an issue with nbn up in QLD.

Turns out around 2KM of fibre was damaged due to some construction going on in the area (Cairns).

Roughly 150 customers without internet access on Wed night.

nbn updates were regular within their portal system. Every 1.5 hours copy and paste the previous comments that provided no information. Then a slight change to the comments and copy and paste began again. Pretty much 24 hours without any information as to what the problem was, what was being done to resolve it, and a estimate as to when access would be restored. Even my boss was being ignored by our CDM.

There is no concept of customer service from nbn, but before someone say the private sector would do it better, just try dealing wiith Telstra / Optus / TPG and you'll wonder if that would be generally true.

We now have to start thinking about the NBN.Home phone to be switched off at the end of August.

If your switch off is in August then I would think there is a very good chance you have fibre to the home. For the most part that is a well oiled machine so you shouldn't have much issues, main choice is provider which can vary from location to location.

It says we are FTTN.We think the node is ~ 300 metres away.
That's one of the potential issues. You could conceivably be less than 50 metres if it's just over the road, but it all depends upon just how the copper cables have been laid. Nevertheless, you're unlikely to be in my situation, so once someone on your side of the road has a connection, you'll have a good idea.

Our friends in Falcon WA have lost every communication at their home. The mobile reception is cough and they are in trouble in their Street with a degraded cable.

I've been making as much noise about this as possible, with letters to the minister(s), both federal and state. TIO. Local member, council, garbage man, plus every resident nearby. At the parliamentary inquiry the other day, the chairperson offered to take it up for me...an offer I gladly accepted.

Since then, I've been directly contacted by the NBN, who admitted that the street should never have been declared. Solution will either be a micro node or FTTK. No timeframe, but supposedly 'not that long'. But, in a real turnaround, it appears that my ADSL will be permitted to be reactivated. Date for that is the start of May. So, we will see....TBA.

Get them to contact the parliamentary inquiry. You can find the address on the net.

This is from my kids school. My iphone using kids account gave this result at lunchtime on a weekday.

Fixed wireless - private connection not NBN
Zero contention for the line but obviously sharing among all the student and staff with access.

Multi Tbyte allowance per month

Cost: circa $3000 per month. Managed service 24/7

As Im saying all along. NBN is Promising a first class service for a cut price. Something has to give.....

Well yes and no. NBN is for the most part capable of first class service (excluding FTTN) but it is the RSP's that are promising the cut price.
