NBN Discussion

Friend in Jindabyne is about to get FTTN. Currently getting 8-18Mbps on ADSL. Suspect he is quite close to exchange.
He is happy with what he has got but i warned him that in 18 months after the FTTN going live he may not have any choice.

Does anyone know what FTTN speeds this may roughly translate to?.
He has been looking for a node but can't find it. I told him its green and new. Maybe he is having a boys look.

Have a look at the web link I posted on #1651. If you look at his home, it will give an idea of the distance to the node, and the possible speed.

Ok, I've just had a look at Jindabyne, and it seems that only the areas serviced by wireless are actually available. The NBN rollout map does say FTTN, with an availability of May 17....so one of the maps is wrong. Tell your mate not to be the first in the street, and NOT to change ISPs simultaneously.

He has been getting all sorts of mail offers for NBN. The FW is for "rural" Jindabyne and surrounds. The township will be on FTTN.
When pollies are involved any start date should be ignored until it happens.
However as the town is in EdenMonaro that bellwether electorate, no govt will want to stuff up the implementation, while the opposition will be yelling as hard as they possibly can about any perception of slackness.

I don't see it ever being particularly cheap.

Whist the NBN is currently barely making a return on the billion dollar investment, there isn't much room to reduce AVC or CVC charges

The problem is that the CVC charge itself stifles demand. It's a large part of the congestion problem, and that in turn drives people to avoid connecting until they are forced to, as well as taking connection tiers that might be less than they would otherwise.

Do you know how far your house is to the node?
Can you say which ISP?

I posted the details above, however I guessed the wrong node .... I'm about 350m if you take the road route .... about 100m as the crow flies. I went with Telstra with 1/2 priced speed boost.

Can you please provide a review of the NBN installation at your premises.

Excellent!

They sent me a free modem a week before connection date, communication was via email and they gave me a time when the connection would be completed. There was no need to be home as they completed all tasks outside (at the node?) and when the line went dead about 5 mins later it all came back online - totally seamless! I already had a NBN compatible modem.

Three hours later...

Friend in Jindabyne was about to connect FTTN to the NBN as his NBN "Check Address" confirmed "Great News! You can now switch to the nbn network.

Rang Telstra to commence the process and was told his address was not ready yet.
Went back to NBNCo and rechecked - and yes 'Great News....."
To and Fro with Telstra for about a week
Then on Monday this week his Check address message changed to: "There's still work to be done before we connect your premises"

AFAHCS (as far as he can see) there is no works in his street.
I told him about JB747's experience and he now reckons he has dodged a bullet.

Interestingly he has great LOS to the Jindabyne NBN FW tower but because his address is gazetted as part of the Jindabyne township he cant connect to the NBN FW that his neighbour behind him (who is not part of jindabyne township) can.

For those interested. I've been connected for a week plus - no outages, and in the main pretty happy with the deal.

Download tops out at around 78mbps - this last for most of the day
Download starts dying around the time schools start sending kids home... it's completely crippled at peak hour home viewing

Upload tops out at 32mbps and stays there the whole time.

The images are a guide only as they only show the speed at the time I did the test i.e. I'm getting top download speed for around 18 hours of the day.

What's your worst download speed?. Do you have any latency readings?. What app created those graphs?....Thanks

About 14 mbps around 9pm most nights... this was about where my best speed topped out on ADSL2.

Do you been "ping" if so the best has been 7ms

beta.speedtest.net ... they have a history page where you can download your results.
