hmmm. I live less than 5 km from city center and cannot get adsl2.. well within 500 metres there is around 200 home units plus all the normal housing. But we are not getting serviced by private industry or getting updated technology. And yes I checked the construction map, we are not on the list for any future development. You should read the blogs on this internet mess. No country (except us) is going down this path and building something that is clearly 10+ years out of date. So as I said before either we are the smartest country in the world or .. you can guess the other answer. And those in the rural area, hmm many not happy the way its getting done too..

Typical city dweller view. There's already pretty much universal ADSL2+ in the cities, but even major towns have ADSL 1 or less. How about rolling it out where it is NEEDED first?

The remotest locations struggle to get a modem connection, while city locations are mostly concerned about getting 5-10Mb instead of 15-20. Still baffling ?

Pretty happy I have bought a house in Melbourne which is in the area where the proper and real 'NBN' (that word has now come to mean a multiple of different things) FTTP has been installed.

This project has just turned in to a cash cow for contractors/consultants regardless of who the government is.

If we were paying for something that met today's world standards (and shown can be upgraded to even faster) then paying a bit more to get it done right the first time is not an issue. But paying for something that no one in the networking world would build is the problem.

The worst thing is that of all of the neoluddites in the current government, Turnbull actual knows better as he's shown with his share investments in French fibre companies. Making him the worst of the bunch.

I have a great idea to save money. We change the build to a node to string network. I remember as a child I could communicate over a string connected to a tin can.. Surely the internet can work over string... Maybe dipped in water will make it conduct better for higher speeds.

And with the price of metal dropping should be no trouble to give everyone a spare can. Maybe they already have one in the kitchen cupboard. The larger the can the higher the speed. If you have 2 cans the other becomes the telephone .

Yeah, even with the current cheapo 'fixed wireless' coverage of most of the country. Gee, I wonder how much fibre to the house might have really cost, if it was ever costed other than on the back of a serviette? How much more expensive do you think it is to dig trenches and put optic fibre in, or even string it pole to pole (where there are poles!) compared to transmitting over the airwaves ("fixed wireless" service), for huge areas of Australia?

I'm in rural Tasmania. Can't get ADSL, no, not even ADSL1. Fixed wireless tower under construction now; NBN service by November they say. Again, I wonder how much it would have cost to optic fibre my place and I wonder if it would have reached here by 2050?

Cellular will never have the scalability, reliability, or performance, of a fixed line.

4G is already becoming noticeably slower and more congested than it was 6-12 months ago, as more 4G capable devices come online.

I agree. But NBN 'Fixed wireless' is not 4G (or 3G).

Its amazing how much of the NBN debate is fixated on 'speed' (led by the media-arti, who of course never live more than 10km from the CBD)!

I run my main business from one address where I can only get ADSL1. My other business location can't get ANY ADSL. I will be perfectly happy with Fixed Wireless NBN, as will so many people outside the 'coughtersphere'.
