just a side note...the bassinets at 1A/B J/K are actually 'built into' the bulkhead ie..baby is 'in' the bulkhead...the full bassinet depth doesnt protrude out in front of you.. theres only a couple of inches intrusion by the opening of the bassinet cover...sorry i dont have pic to illustrate but tried to describe as best i can...hope this helps

"it's in the bulkhead?"

(in my best Zoolander voice) ;)

So the baby is entombed?

its like a ledge and the bassinet is in a cutout on top of the ledge...much like a sink that sits in the cutout of a bench...
Does that mean if you are not travelling with a baby the space could actually be useful during flight? Sounds unlikely to be as useful as the space next to row 4 in old config but imagine 5B/J could be.

When I was in 1B I didn't find that the space was useful - too high up and far away to be used as a table, not at all like the old 4A or the new row 5 seats. Although it may be recessed it still means that there is less legroom for the first row than for other rows - issue isn't with the seat extension being constrained but more that the 'A' passenger has to climb over the legs of the 'B' passenger in the same way that you had to on the old skybeds. The new ones on the A380 and on other rows in the refurbished 747's have sufficient space to squeeze past without any mountaineering skills

agree..the ledge isnt that useful..things can slip off due to the slight incline of a/c inflight... and true that due to the tapering in of the a/c nose there is foot 'climbing' involved if 1B/1J is in bed mode.

I was allocated 1B and 2B for next month. Have changed to 5A both ways based on serfty's advice as 3E/F n/a. Will see how it goes.

Whoops, yep. Still getting my head around no F seats. Its normally 1A :)

We must have similar seat preferences... I was in 1A till the config change on my flight, also moved myself to 5B :)

Could you possibly do me a favour and report back your thoughts on 5B after your trip? Specifically interested to hear how useful the "table" next to the seat is (where 5A would be if there was enough room), and what the views are like - whether it's similar to a normal window seat. My flight on one of the reconfigured 747s later this year will be only my second ever in int J, and first ever in int J on a 747 - trying to decide if I should stick with 5B or go with something on the upper deck for the experience :-)

Yep, will do. I love the upper deck on QF 744s but none available for this flight so going with row 5. I will let you know. My flight is not until mid April though.

I've followed Serfty's advice and taken 3F on my flight to DFW. I'll report back after the flight (24th of March)

One of each - upper deck one way, 5B the other!

Not sure if that is what you're doing, or a suggestion for me?

If the latter, I can't quite do that as the plane on the way over is a A380 rather than a 747. I will be on the upper deck on the A380 of course (in Emerald City no less), but from what I've read it doesn't have quite the same "ambiance" as the top deck of the 747 :-)

That'd be great... see if you can scope out the other seats / zones too and let us know what you think :-)

Just got off QF16 on Friday and I must say it is great being on the 744, in the MkII J seats

Seemed I was the only person downstairs to have a seat vacant next to me (I was in 2A)

Observations... Row 1, no thanks... whilst I like the 'old school prestige' of having 1A on the boarding pass,
it looked way too cramped for my liking. There is barely enough room between both aisle seats, it might as well
be a single combined row.

As for row 5, that will be my choice of seats going forward when travelling solo.

The side table is quite large, and whilst the person sitting there blocked my full view, it looked like it
had an extra few storage pockets at the front as well.

Excellent option if you want to catch up on some work, or just enjoy the free space around you.

Even though you are set back from the windows, being a window seat person I did not see any issues
other than not being able to see down (but hey, there is not much to see over 12-14hrs on those flights)

Re: New 3 class 747 layout - QF7/8/15/16/... and maybe now 107/108... and CPAP Power

Some good news and some info:Managed to snare 3 x JASAs next Jan LAX-SYD :p

But on QF108 (old config) not the lovely shiny QF12 :(

Still, compensated by getting exit row upstairs for Mrs Paddy and Jnr Paddy, but I was stuck in 13A as I have to use a CPAP machine :(:(

Oh well, still felt very fortunate getting JASAs at that time of year anyway.Keeping an eye on seat allocations from time to time and today discovered all the seat allocations had been lost due to equipment change!

Yes, at least on 7 Jan QF108 LAX-SYD is with the new layout :p:p:p

Rang Qantas and found out there are now 3 seats in Bus that have the requisite power point for a CPAP machine. THey are 3A, 8A and 12A.

Hope that info helps someone.

Paddy

Was in 5B on QF8 on Sunday, can report back that the "table" is very useful as it contains a large storage bin - a little like the storage bins on the window seats of 747 upper deck and A380. You also have guaranteed privacy and plenty of legroom as it's an exit row seat. You can lean across the storage bin and see out of the window so I don't see that as being a disadvantage. The only rival to row 5 would be the seats in what was the old first cabin. That area does seem to retain some of the old First ambience whereas row 5 is back in the main J cabin. I'll still be going with 5B in future though on 3 class 747 trips.

Is Paddy "Jnr" old enough to sit in the exit row?

So 13A is not suitable for a CPAP machine but I take it you were moved to 12A?
