I've just booked 14a Had a choice of row 1 or 3 in the forward cabin, but row 5 was already taken. Will report back next month

I've just selected 5J for an October flight from SCL. I had previously selected 3F, but after recent discussions thought I would try the solo seat experience in row 5.

BTW, I selected 5J over 5B as I thought it may be slightly more secluded and out of the way for boarding if they use the adjacent door (?).

I will report back, but will also be interested in any reports and pix of the 5B or 5J experience in the meantime.

Travelled in 3K to DFW last week. I agree that the front cabin is the place to be - it has a private and spacious feel. With the new seats, climbing over your neighbour (or being climbed over) is not so much of a concern as the old layout. I think the removal of lavs is definitely a downside, though. Although I never had to wait too long, I noticed a couple of pax getting upset towards the end of the flight when lots of folks wanted to get changed at once.

At the nub of this problem is the number of people using the toilets as changerooms, and delaying those who actually want to use the toilet or washbasin. I'd love to see some spaces made available for those simply wanting to change clothes - perhaps a curtain-type arrangement around the door spaces on both sides??

This has me swaying towards sticking with 14A. I still consider the upper deck to be "private"

You will never see this, just not economical. Every square inch on a plane is scrutinized by an accountant somewhere.....

Is it just me?
i find it really hard to work out why people spend so much damned time in the bathroom. Even if changing, it shouldn't take more than a few minutes.

Curtain near to the crew jump seats which can be utilised at the start/end of the flight for changing?

Did DFW over and back a few weeks ago. 5B over, 5J back. Both great seats, i liked J better only because less foot traffic on that side. But i did get someone next to me across the aisle (clearly a NB or non FF) who complained that i got a seat to myself!!

Yep, and she glared at me every time i got up!

I'm the sort of person who doesn't like to cause a fuss, but I think that would have been enough for even me to have words with her. Who did she complain to - you or the FAs? Did she elaborate on why she thought it was unfair that you made a better / earlier seat selection than her??

Is there a storage shelf or cabinet on the outboard side of those seats? Looks like something there from the seating chart but not sure what?

Thx

Yes, she complained directly to me and mentioned it to the person next to her as well. First time in J though, so maybe her expectations were for F instead!

As for the storage, you get a huge side bin. It is great. It could fit my shoes, laptop, backpack and pillow/blanket during takeoff or landing.

Also very handy to put your meal tray on if service is very slow retrieving the trays.

Sounds great (the storage bin, not the whinger).

Thanks for the details Boris.

As there is only one toilet upstairs, wouldn't you face the same issue?

Downstairs you have 40 J Class passengers to 2 toilets vs Upstairs 18 J Class Passangers to 1 toilet?

Does Qantas have one of the worst passenger-to-bathroom ratios for any airline in J? The only airline I can find that is worse is EK on their 777 aircraft, 2 bathrooms for 42 passengers.

Cathay on its A330s to Sydney for example has a ratio of 3:38. Singapore Airlines has a ratio of 4:60, or 1:15 on its A380. Virgin Australia has 3 bathrooms (albeit one is ladies only) for 33 passengers on the 777s across to the USA. VA even has 2 bathrooms for 40 Premium Economy customers....

Some people never cease to amaze me. Most don't bother to be preoactive about reserving a seat at the time of booking then just expect to get what they want when they arrive at the airport.

Silly cow! Sounds like someones mother-in-law travelling on a Classic Award paid with someone elses points. The person sitting next to her probably thought she was an idiot too. I know hindsight's always 20/20 vision but I would've loved to see the expression on her face if you'd asked her if she was a Platinum Frequent Flyer?

Or you could walk down the back of whY & not wait at all. I saw one rogue J pax in his QF pj's do just that on QF7 last Sunday, mind you he was already in his pj's so was maybe using the WC for official purposes. Will we start to see a revolt from pax in whY against J class pax using 'their' toilet?

SWMBO had a peek in the whY toilets on our last walk around and she quickly decided she could hold till we were back upstairs
