Hence my confusion - it was saying to look at the 56J but that i old school...

Anyway back OT :)

I suffered exactly the same confusion - it took me a while to register that the 58J seat map was a layout I hadn't seen before and thus was the one I needed.

To increase confusion the QF seat map markis10 refers to doesn't appear as an option when clicking on the flight number in the QF View My Booking page - the only links are to the old 3-class configs.

My confusion came from the fact that the seatplan I could choose from was different to what was coming up on the Booking Info and Seat Guru - but makes a lot more sense now :)

At least you're able to see a seat plan!

QF has moved me from 39J/39K to 48B/48C on QF7, presumably due to a change of equipment (which has sadly resulted in a loss of the perk of a PE seat :(). When I try to select a seat, I get this message:

Please review the following items
  • We are not able to display the seat map. Contact us or you can select an aisle or window seat preference. Selecting a seat preference will cause previously requested seats to be lost.

There has been a suggestion that if you select aisle/window preference, then log out of Qantas.com then back in a few minutes later you may again be able to select seat. (I have not tried this)

Other than that you may need to contact them.

Thanks serfty. I decided to phone QFF yesterday and managed to select 69J/69K for QF7 on Sun 18 Mar. The seat map for that flight is still not available online for me. Your suggestion on how to make it available is a good one (and is appreciated), but, as doing it "will cause previously selected seats to be lost" and probably result in me having to make another call to QFF, I'll just settle for this duo of seats down the back.

So far, my QF8 return on Sat 07 Apr is still a non-reconfigured 747, and I have 39A/39B. Fingers crossed it stays that way!

Now I just have to sort out disappearing AA flights on that booking!
 
New 3 class 747 layout - QF8

Imagine my surprise when I was handed my boarding pass for QF8 to find that instead of relaxing in an old first class seat (4A) I was in 1B - hang on I thought, there isn't a 1B on the seat map. Then the penny dropped - we're on a newly refurbished plane.

I haven't been on one of these before so I thought I'd offer some impressions of the new layout. I'd gone over to the US on an A380 in my preferred seat of 13E so I guess that forms the basis of my comparison.

First up - I'd avoid row 1 on this plane, they really have squeezed the four skybeds into this space and it shows, compared to the other seats these are definately cramped and if you're in an aisle seat then the person in the window seat has to climb over your legs when the bed is extended (unlike the other seats where you can usually squeeze round without disturbing anyone).

The middle seats in row 3 looked pretty good - you have a table arrangement in front of you that had papers laid out when we boarded. The only downside was that they did look very much "on display" - not much in the way of privacy.

The single seats on row 5 looked good - rather like the old 4A in first with a large table next to you - this might be a preferred seat for me next time

I also had a quick look upstairs and the layout seemed pretty good - I might convert to an upstairs person on the 747 from now on.

One last thing - if you do end up in the front section you'll be one of the last to leave the plane. It's been a while since I've been at the back of that sort of shuffle. Luckily customs and immigration through Brisbane was lightening quick.

Anyway - just some quick thoughts, would be interested to see others opinions as this is likely to be a plane that I'll be on fairly often in the future.

I'm going to test this out on the 24th (selected 3F). I would think it would be more private, but you're also well away from the 2 toilets in the new layout.

I presume these are MkII Skybeds?

Zone A is more private but it is a long way from anything - not only when exiting but also the service started from the back and worked towards us so was fairly slow (although the FA's were very good). The single seat in row 5 looked very good but suffers from being in the main cabin. I think I'll try the upper deck next time, although the problem really was that with such a late change of seat map/plane you don't get a chance to pick the seat that you want and just get allocated where Qantas thinks you want to be (my preference is aisle seat as far forward as possible) - hence I got put into 1B.
 
Damn, just checked my QF8 booking on 09/06 and it too has been changed to a reconfigured 747. Was really looking forward to experiencing the (admittedly old) F seat / cabin :(

I've just moved myself from 1A to 5B as I'm travelling solo... does anyone know if 5B has a decent window view? From the QF interior diagram (http://www.qantas.com.au/infodetail/flying/inTheAir/ourAircraft/744ER-58J36W270Y.pdf) it looks like it should, but I would appreciate confirmation from someone who's seen it given that it's an exit row seat and I'm not sure how much the "shell" around the Skybed MkII obstructs the view.

Interestingly, the EF seatmap for the flight is showing 5A and 5K as existing and available even though they're not visible on the QF seatmap (and presumably don't exist).

Finally, a little OT, does EF have anything like a "type of plane changed alert"? Would be handy.

I ended up in 1A initially as that's what I had allocated when the plane was still an old 4-class version (my now-lost solo F seat - waah!) - interesting that QF kept my seat allocation between plane swaps whereas others in here seem to have lost their seat allocation entirely?

From memory 5B is really an aisle seat with a largish table/storage space next to it (presumably where they couldn't quite squeeze in 5A) i.e you're a fair way from the window anyway. The skybed doesn't usually get in the way of viewing.

Once again, thanks for the info. Doesn't sound ideal for me (I like my window views), but sounds like it should still offer a decent view and other benefits (aisle access, no one next to me, large table for me to use, etc).

Except the type of plane hasn't changed, only the configuration! This won't help you but when my MEL-LAX 744 was switched to a 388 (terrible, I know) I got an email from QF because the arrival time changed (i.e. the 388 takes 15 minutes on this route than 744 according to the new timings).

The issue in my case (and others in this thread) is that we had pre-allocated Row 4, which doesn't exist at all in the new config.
 
Am travelling on QF 15 on June and it has just gone from new 744 J to J in the old 744 which is F seating. As there are 2 of us we are in Row 2 whatever the 2 centre seats are.

Was actually looking forward to trying the skybed mark II seats in a 747!

1B and 1J also bassinet positions - sounds as if it escape from 1A/K would be almost impossible with "baby on board". Opted for 14A on upcoming flight - first on rerfurbished but am a fan of row 16 in the old configuration. Interested to hear reports on row 5 though.

That's almost identical to our scenario of QF7 in May. :( I was reading this thread I thought I'd better check our seating & sure enough the 39JK had disappeared next to the flight when I checked on the website via MMB portal.

I went to select new seats but at the end it said the transaction couldn't be completed & to call QF so I did & that's when I discovered we'd been reallocated seats in row 48 however that didn't show online. They changed us to row 69AB which is the 2 seats on the side towards the back of whY.

I keep checking daily just in case it changes back so I have a good chance of grabbing row 39 again - might even do a seat alert on Expert Flyer as back up.

I wonder how far in advance the aircraft swap was or are you just assuming it was a late change because you only found out about it at the airport?

just a side note...the bassinets at 1A/B J/K are actually 'built into' the bulkhead ie..baby is 'in' the bulkhead...the full bassinet depth doesnt protrude out in front of you.. theres only a couple of inches intrusion by the opening of the bassinet cover...sorry i dont have pic to illustrate but tried to describe as best i can...hope this helps
