My figures for .... Citi Sig ($300 I think)

You can get the Signature fee free, see this thread

Dont get me wrong, I think the Select is a great card but with the promo you need to be pumping serious bucks through it like Cove and Cruiser Elite to get the benefit. For most of us mere mortals the Signature is probably better due to the high fee on the Select.

PS. For me 1c is just OK, given you can in general get slightly cheaper than that. I will do it but would always be looking for better.

I agree that 1c per point is ok. However, if you're getting the additional points from Select at a cost of 1c each relative to Signature, you must have a very high Visa spend. Select only earns an additional 0.33 pts per % domestically and 0.66 pts per $ overseas compared to Signature.

If you assume: (a) that 30% of your spending is overseas, and (b) the additional fee for Select is just $400, then by my calculations you would have to spend almost $90k per year on Visa to make the the incremental cost of the additional points 1c. If you can get the Signature fee free (I have it fee free for life), then you would have to spend $160k per year on Visa to make the the incremental cost of the additional points 1c (again assuming that 30% of your spending is overseas). I would say for most people, overseas spending would account for a lot less than 30% of the total, meaning things get even less favourable for Select.

Assuming you use Amex wherever you can, and taking into account that you don't get points from Citi when paying ATO etc, it's likely that you would only use Visa for a minority of your spending in the first place. I know I use Visa for less than 30% of my spending, and at least 80% of my spending is in Oz, so I'd need to have a total credit card spend of over $600k per year before Select even started to look worthwhile for me. And I certainly don't spend that much!

However, as others have correctly pointed out, everyone's circumstances are different, so for some Select is worthwhile. My advice is: if you spend several hundred grand a year on credit cards, then it's worth doing some further analysis to determine if Select is worth the additional cost. Otherwise, just go with Signature.

Wow thanks for a great response. My sums were based on paying retail for both cards. With the free Citi Sig, there is no contest. I have a reasonable OS spend but this does not make up for the diff.

I was happy with SELECT until they took away the free hotel stay !!!!

Now, it's fee free Signature for me.

I got about 500k points on the black card..what's the best way to spend these? Looking at a J flight to HKG towards the end of the year. Is their travel service good value? Did some research and I was thinking that transferring the points to CX AsiaMiles or MH Enrich would be best and then getting a reward flight from there.

+1 on that, I was just too lazy to do the calcs. Would note on the overseas spend that some think the points (good as they are) on the Citi cards do not justify the 3% FX fee and would rather use a fee free card (28 degrees for example) for no fee and no points. I have no strong opinion on this and have in fact used both cards dependant on how my points balance is looking.

Just wondering if anyone out there has managed to get the Altitude Black at less than full freight? And if yes, do they mind sharing "how to"

I called them, said I had paid the annual fee for X years, and with all the other credit card offers about were you able to give a reduction in the annual fee. It was waived for 1 year, and I will soon be ringing again to do the same..

For Altitude Black?

For Altitude Black?

I was confused by that too. FWIW, when Westpac launched Altitude Black last year, they upgraded anyone who had an old Altitude Platinum Plus, and committed to the same annual fee. I think I said earlier in the thread that I pay $195 for it, but actually it's only $150. I have no idea if they're likely to offer similar reductions to new customers though.

For Altitude Black?

Yep Altitude Black. Annual fee of $295 with the plus card, carried across and capped to the black, instead of $395.

Doubt whether you can get it for free or reduced rate if a new customer.

cheers

If you have a Westpac mortgage with a Premier Advantage Package, the annual fee on Black cards is waived.

There was an offer last year for the Earth Black cards for$125 for the life of the card. Not sure if they offered that for the Altitude Black. Wait and see what they offer later on in the year.

Has anyone tried transferring points into the frequent flyer programs? Is it possible to transfer to different accounts?

Do you mean transfer to accounts with various different FF programs, or transfer to an FF account in someone else's name?

You can definitely do the former - eg Velocity, KrisFlyer, Malaysia, Asia Miles, Air NZ. I'm not sure if you can transfer to an FF account in someone else's name though, if that's what you're asking. I've only ever transferred to accounts in my own name.

I meant the latter. Like amex where u can just specify a frequent flyer account number.

I've only transferred points to Malaysia's enrich program, but that required the Enrich and Altitude Rewards account to be under the exact same name.

Not sure if that's a Westpac or Malaysia Airlines requirement.

Thanks for the info. Called Westpac black card services, and confirmed that ALL points transfer to FF programs need to be in card holders name

That reply is to be expected, of course.

I had transferred to a FF into another account (not the CC holder) - same surname but different first name - successfully.
