New Amex statement credits

No giftcards in HN Balgowlah. Had planned to go to where Dr Ralph picked up his but didn't so I wouldn't miss the horserace-sounds like even if I had gone I would have missed the boat

How about HN e-gift cards, any restrictions on that?
No personal experience. But information from this time around and from previous times I've seen on Ozbargain is that your application for egift cards will say something like 'referred for consideration' and then will be rejected.

its just a virtual visa card, so good for paying bills online
I had encountered a number of rejections and customer service showed no interest in assisting so I stopped buying the virtual online card.

Just registered 2 of my cards for Harvey Norman, now to find a store in Sydney that stocks the gift cards.
Good luck. I detected hostility when I called a few stores to find out. The cashback must be coming out of their salaries!

I suspect the margin on selling you a GC isn’t as high as selling you a product from one of the non-excluded brands (>$100 if they don’t allow you to split the payment on a high value purchase).

HN Carindale - they had physical gift cards. Paid for it and email came through. The shop assistant had trouble activating it so I went to go a few other things while he fixed it. Came back and he said he couldn't activate as they no longer sold this particular brand (not sure if this is true or not). When putting through the refund I inadvertently put it through another AMEX card.

1. Is this likely true about the physical card or is there some other reason he couldn't activate it?

2. Is there likely to be any issue with the refund to a different card? If not could this be a way of effectively turning these statement credits into cash?

See information I provided earlier today in this thread.

If you made a successful transaction of $400 or more on your AMEX I would think you'll get the cash back for it.

But I think this will be a one off.

The same store clearly is not going to sell you the same product and as I've already detailed other stores are already withdrawing this product from sale.

I accidentally had this happen once - the outcome was positive for me

Staff should not do it, or allow it, for fraud prevention reasons.
(ie it is quite common for people who have stolen cards buy goods/services one them and to then seek refunds to a different credit card or bank account etc when this happen the business/store bares the loss and not the issuing bank).

I certainly 100% refuse anyone who asks my business to refund to a different card (which most of the time are quite literally Nigerians).

However having said that if you have used a non-reloadable card/ gift card/e-voucher the business has to refund bya different means. At Woolworths this has normally been cash in hand, though they have also given me a new gift card to the amount of the owed amount.

Clear lesson is that you need to act as soon as these offers are announced. You cannot delay at all.

Amen to that: last years 300/100 offer, I went off to my locan HN and got 6 vpay out of 15 on day 1 it was released. I didn't have the backbone to do the other 7 cards as I was scared the lady was getting suspicious or something. Came back the following day and they weren't selling them anymore.

I know the owner of MWAVE and when they were part of amex's cashback offer he told me that they had pay a big portion of it back as merchant fees to AMEX. If this is the case with HN, I wouldn't be surprised if they want to block VISA gift cards from this promotion. Even blocking HN gift cards would be reasonable because a lot of the stores are franchised and they wouldn't want to risk not seeing the sale returned through their register.

I've taken things back to JBHiFi after using GCs to avoid the Amex charge. They have only ever issued a GC in return

Not indians?

Interesting little scam recently. Purchase expensive car insurance and/or Home and Contents insurance (around $5000 premium) on stolen credit card and going in online and updating credit card details to another card that was either stolen or opened using false documents then call the next day and request refund to new credit as they were going back to India. Withdraw the funds and they literally disappeared.

HN is now official rejecting every sale of e-gfit cards you are trying to buy from the website if your payment method is AMEX. The resctriction will last until 31/12/2017.

Missed out on the Nando's and DJ offers.

Nando's isn't bad but a bit overpriced but be good with the offer.

Same with DJ's but some good deals can found on their horrible website.

Might get a PS4 Pro with the HN offer.

I got a points offer come through of 4400 MR for $4500 spend. Normally hit that monthly anyway so it's a no brainer.
