New Amex statement credits

I tried to use my amex at the chinese restaurant on top of hurstville westfields the guy said they didnt accept i said yes they do he asked the boss who nodded.

Thanks for the heads up, Foggy. Will the promo be triggered if an eGift card is purchased?
e-giftcards are processed from a different "merchant" so wont trigger the cashback. It's the same merchant that processes e-giftcards from entertainment book for David Jones.

With all these incidents of shop small places claiming they dont take amex (or their terminals decline amex), is the best resolution to contact amex and get the $10 credit in "goodwill" like Dr Ralph?

This what I have done in past years.

PS It really is the only resolution as the business concerned will not recompense you.

I had the same drama at a restaurant last night. They used Amex bill folders and had the stupid CBA iPad machines that all say "Amex" even if it's not accepted. The ditsy waitress tried three different Amex cards (which declined) before running to find the manager to see what was wrong. He announced "we don't take it, the folders came with the shop". Ended up paying with MC, the guy didn't get that what he was doing was clearly misleading conduct. It was a Lebanese restaurant.
Ugh. I hate this. It's so clearly bait-and-switch.

What really rubs salt in is when they still have the "Shop Small" stickers on the front door or window.

After the first few times, I made a point of pointing this out to AMEX when I'd call them and request they ensure the merchant removes them.

The stickers (in the two times since I started) were off within 2 days at one place and 3 days at the other.

Went to a newsagent wirh a Shop Small sticker and asked them for a $20 Opal card top up...they refused to accept Amex so I cancelled the top up :(

anyone know anyone who runs a retail store in the small shop promotion? just curious as to know if there are any fees that they have to pay to be part of the small shop promotion?

doesn't make sense why they wouldn't want to top up opal..

Don't think the margin on these types of sales covers the fee AMEX charges or if it does it is only slightly more. For my gocard top ups I have mentioned I'm happy for them to put on a surcharge.

I asked one of my local shop guy and he didn't even know about the promotion. He said he doesn't get charged any extra.

I would assume Amex cover all or most of it

Imagine buying a $100 item with 5 cards and the business having to pay $50 in credits

This is my experience as well - very few of the merchants I use for Shop Small have any idea it is even happening when I mention it

I bought a pair of shoes for $200 last week and paid with 10 cards @$20 each...initially told couldn't be done but I persisted and as it was not busy, eventually got it done with a lot of bemusement ;)

As far as I know, Shop Small is funded by Amex.

Other promotions (specific to a given merchant), are mostly funded by the merchant - although Amex may sometimes tip in a bit.

No fees to be part of shop small promotion. At the end of the day, its free advertising for Amex for small businesses to stick those shop small stickers up on the windows.
We have a Amex rep that comes to the pharmac_ once a year and drops a whole heap of promo material, including these stickers.

While I'm no fan of this behaviour from restaurants I think this is just hyperbole. You only get the Amex folder when you are paying for the bill so you have already made the decision to eat there.

Fair enough complaint if they have an Amex sign on their front window or Shop Small sign but I think using complaining about a restaurant using Amex folders is drawing a fairly long bow.

Went to a HN who partway through the promotion stopped selling vpay and prepaid Visa cards.
Got them to price match an item from another retailer which was below cost for them. They asked about my method of payment - gift cards was the answer.
Those gift cards were bought during the current Amex promotion. ;)
I wonder how much HN made from the sale.

Besides this, one of the good things about HN is that you could price match an item from another retailer and not get stung the Amex surcharge that some impose.

Generally newsagents I’ve ised for opal top ups surcharge Amex up to $2 but have been prepared to do multiple loads. Hoping to do mine this week. Hoping they’ll do it again without resistance. Still $8 profit per split. I can live with that.

Anybody heard anything about click frenzy offers for Amex this year?
Last year was 60/30 at decent places...sad face this year if nothing surfaces :-(
