New Amex statement credits

my local HN who seems to be happy to sell the Vpay cards, I called today again and got told head office has stopped sales of hte vpay cards and deleted the product,

do you guys think this is true, or theyre just stopping it temporarily? or its another sales pitch from them,

my guy seemed quite genuine
If you read the earlier posts you will see where I reported the same and saw these cards in the bin.

I don't trust HN sales staff. As I get told a different thing each time

I'd much rather hear of other people's experiences and make my own decisions form there

A lot of stores stopped selling the vPay cards a while back. Some are still selling the Visa gift cards but that appears likely to be removed soon.

Some stores stopped selling all gift cards around the time these promotions started.

Not sure why people are surprised.

Why is everyone so pissed off. The t&c exclude gift cards. They are just cracking down. It was good while it lasted. Time to move on. Either buy goods or forget the offer.

While I agree with moving on, the T&Cs only say you won't get the cashback not that you cant buy a giftcard using Amex.
Instead, retailers are using their perogative not to sell something if they dont want to

You don't really make sense to me Andye.

As a retailer it is my choice to sell whatever products I wish to sell. If I don't want to see gift cards then I won't sell them (to anyone - from what I am reading Amex payment is not being singled out - just everyone trying to buy gift cards - which is perfectly fair).

Dinned at 'COSTA AZZURRA WOODFIRE RESTAURANT' 71 PRINCES HIGHWAY, FAIRY MEADOW, NEW SOUTH WALES tonight. When I tried to pay they told me that they do not accept AMEX payments at all. I specifically shopped here to take advantage of the small shop promotion and they are listed on the AMEX website. Had to pay by other means. Contacted AMEX via their online chat system tonight. Told that they would investigate and give me a $10 good will credit. Not as good as the credit I would have received from the 5 cards I was planning to split the bill over. But better than nothing. And it looks like I won't loose one of the 5 opportunities for cash back on that card.

Did you call their bluff and tell them that you only have Amex and see if they relented?

Not sure if everyone is aware that david jones are now stocking apple/audio/visual products again, I think it is a great time to order $150 gift card + low value item for free postage and get the $30 cash back from AMEX

Sometimes you should just use your Amex and not mention it. If they really don't accept it, you'll know.
I don't know what people are thinking when they ask the cashier if they accept Amex.
If you give someone an opportunity to say no, don't be disappointed when they say no.
A lot of places will automatically recognise the Amex and apply the surcharge if there is one.

I do like you, but some places, notably private health practitioners, like to take your card from you to put it in the machine or tap it and then notice the Amex logo. When that happens, I call their bluff.

I wonder what the legalities if you simply said. I don't have any eftpos or visa or cash.

I'll bet you they will suddenly accept it.
Unless the play the Mach in is broken gamr

I often eat at a local Vietnamese restaurant and their terminal is regularly "not working". And yes, it suddenly works again once they reboot it after you say you don't have any cash. Every time.

I had the same drama at a restaurant last night. They used Amex bill folders and had the stupid CBA iPad machines that all say "Amex" even if it's not accepted. The ditsy waitress tried three different Amex cards (which declined) before running to find the manager to see what was wrong. He announced "we don't take it, the folders came with the shop". Ended up paying with MC, the guy didn't get that what he was doing was clearly misleading conduct. It was a Lebanese restaurant.

Thanks for the heads up, Foggy. Will the promo be triggered if an eGift card is purchased?

With all these incidents of shop small places claiming they dont take amex (or their terminals decline amex), is the best resolution to contact amex and get the $10 credit in "goodwill" like Dr Ralph?
