New Amex statement credits

Gday

I got an email on 27th December with $50 off my first Uber eats order when i pay with my Amex. Has a promo code. Sounds too good to be true but will give it a go in the next week.

Pele.

Got this too. I'll give it a whirl at some point.

I successfully bought a $400 HN GC today. No questions asked, no frowning at an Amex card. Walked straight back in and bought two products leaving a balance on the GC for another day. Email received from Amex instantly.

You guys in NSW and VIC must breed a different kind of shop assistant because, here in QLD, I have never had any issues with any of the HN statement credit offers.

Diary note - book a trip to QLD for next Dec.

I'm happy to have a (short) break from all these offers (filled up car today with 7-11 $15 gift cards!!)....Looked around HN yesterday....do I buy a camera that I don't really need?! :(...have to decide by 31.12!

Mrs SydneySwan announced this morning when in JB Hi-fi that she wanted a new camera. Managed to divert her to HN - not only was the camera cheaper but it did allow us to use one HN credit at least making it much cheaper.

I finally used the HN credit too. bought a Nintendo Switch + game on Boxing Day, jumped on live chat and they happily price matched to Amazon on both items. With the $100 back and TRS on top, I am very happy...almost half price on RRP

It's definitely not all HN stores in NSW that are a problem. Mainly the ones in the Sydney area from what I have read.

The advantage of small town, less freeloaders :p

I bought successfully few GCs in BNE last month and being overseas most of this month I’ve ordered some more online. At first they were all declined but after sending an angry email saying they violate their own T&C by not letting me purchase GCs online all my orders were magically approved.

You would have avoided the JB Amex surcharge as well...

Which gift cards did you purchase online?

I have never had a problem at taren point have always purchased gift cards but last tine used 8 cards on one fridge

For the past month, I found the statement credits to be very attractive. But always follow the golden rule, only spend if you are/will intend to spend.

Some of my highlights (over 11/12 amex cards):
- 7/11 : Spend $15 or more, get $5 back. Split payments on Myki top-ups.
- Newslink : Spend $20 or more, get $10 back, up to 3 times. Split payments on Myki top-ups (yes, I have a lot of money on my myki, and yes, my myki card is registered)
- Harvey Norman : Spend $400 or more, get $100 back. Used it on iPhone X.
- Best and Less : Spend $25 or more, get $15 back. Bought Jetstar vouchers and redeemed for flights back home during the Boxing Day Sale.
- Harris Scarfe : Spend $60 or more, get $20 back. Similar to above.
- Specsavers : Spend $50 or more, get $25 back. Needed some prescription sunglasses for the summer (or in general)
- Myer : Spend $75 or more, get $15 back. Bought Coles Myer gift cards to spend it on my groceries at Coles.
- Mobile Wallet : Spend $10 or more, get $5 back. Got free statement credit from using ApplePay on the 7-11 deal.
- Expedia : Spend $300 or more, get $60 back. Going to NZ in Feb 2018 and needed some hotels. Expedia prices were quite competitive. In conjunction with Cashreward, made some hefty savings!

Amex credit update for 2017 with 2016 figures in brackets;

Since Jan 1 - $3215 ($3190)
Since Jul 1 - $2585 ($2710)
Since Nov 1 - $1697 ($1915)

These figures are net off activation fees, retailer surcharges, etc. The SydneySwan family has 8 cards although last year and most of this year we only had 7. Before I ran the numbers I thought I had beaten last year comfortably but apparently not. The post Nov 1 numbers are impacted by the less generous Shop Small this year and last year I managed to do much better on the HN credits.

I am happy with this additional income stream. It has mostly been achieved without much effort. With the lean part of the 'amex credit' season approaching, a little belt-tightening may be in order.

Is there a way to check this without manually adding everything up???

I enter all purchases throughout the year in a personal finance software package. It takes about 30 secs for it to generate a report.

You can login to your Amex account, and download data for a specified date range. eg; Download "Year to Date" and play around with it with Excel (or whatever your preferred spreadsheet program is).

Just used it this evening without issue. It's clear prior to finalising your order that you're getting $50 off.
